Franco (Pierre) Petit traité, contenant une des parties principales de chirurgie, laquelle les chirurgiens hernieres exercent, ainsi quil montre en la page suivante, first edition, collation: A-I8 (G³ mislabelled H³), woodcut illustrations, manuscript date to title, title holed and repaired, very slightly affecting woodcut device, contemporary ink ownership names to front free endpaper and title, second neatly crossed out, corner torn from G² just touching text, small modern biro mark to rear pastedown, contemporary limp vellum, lightly marked, spine discoloured with tiny hole, still overall a very clean and fresh copy, 8vo (160 x 103mm), housed in custom morocco box, Lyon, Antoine Vincent, [1556].⁂ Pierre Franco, creator of the suprapubic lithotomy cataract operation and the surgical repair of hernia, is considered to be one of the greatest surgeons of the Renaissance and a forerunner of urology. This work is absent from many major medical collections which regard the expanded second edition of 1561 as the first, yet this edition includes the first recorded description of an operation for strangulated hernia, and so marks itself as a milestone in Renaissance surgical practice. Franco was hugely influential by lauding open operations, and wanted to return them to the realm of regular surgical practice, rather than allowing itinerant practitioners known as 'inciseurs' or 'cutters' to attempt untrained procedures. The treatment of cleft lips amounts to four chapters, in which he recommends that after two days the eschar must be loosened with fresh butter before suturing. Franco also describes in minute detail the technique of radical operation for inguinal hernia. Like all who preceded him after the time of Celsus (except William of Salicet), he would remove the testicle as part of the usual procedure. Yet for patients with one testis he later devised an operation in which the organ was spared, and this life-saving procedure became part of the surgical armamentarium. Though a contemporary of Ambroise Paré, Franco is often neglected from the medical history canon, yet Paré's first book, his Dix Livres de Chirurgie, 1564, plagiarises much of Franco's work on lithotomy and cystostomy, which Paré only later acknowledged in 1575. No other copies listed on ABPC/RBH, and we know of no other copy having appeared in commerce. OCLC list copies in US at Chicago, Harvard, Mayo Clinic, Minnesota and NLM.Provenace: signature of F. Athenosiis on title and P. Guisonii to endpaper, from the library of Jean Blondelet.

Vicq d'Azyr (Félix) Traité d'anatomie et de physiologie, vol.1 [all published], first edition, 35 plain and 34 aquatint plates, some with stipple engraving, contemporary calf, spine gilt with green morocco label, light rubbing to spine and covers, still an excellent copy, folio, Paris, Didot l'aine, 1786.⁂ A rare first edition of 'the most accurate neuroanatomical work produced before the advent of microscopic staining techniques' (Garrison-Morton). Originally projected as a multi-volume study of human anatomy and physiology, the work was never finished, yet its importance lies in the intelligent use of new print-making technique of aquatint to illustrate accurate anatomical illustration. Vicq d'Azyr identifies many of the cerebral convolutions, along with various internal structures of the brain (of which many are named after him). For his studies, he was one of the first to use a chemical cocktail of alcohol and other ingredients for brain preservation - which would not become a standard method until the work of Reil (1759-1813) - as well as using horizontal and coronal sections of the brain for studying its anatomy. As permanent secretary to the Paris Academy of Medicine and personal physician of Marie Antoinette, he produced one of the most outstanding anatomical folios that had yet appeared. Vicq d'Azyr had commenced publication of the work in parts, under royal patronage: the allegorical frontispiece shows Louis XVI as Apollo sitting on a cloud watching an anatomy scene. However, the French Revolution prevented its completion, and copies differ in the order in which they are bound.

Lot 367C

Bernoulli (Johann) Opera omnia, tam antea sparsim edita, 4 vol., first edition, titles in red & black, engraved portraits, title vignettes, head- and tail-pieces and 91 folding engraved plates, Robert Honeyman's bookplate to pastedown, contemporary vellum with red morocco labels to spines, housed in four custom-made red morocco-backed cases (very lightly scuffed), overall a fine set, large 4to, Lausanne & Geneva, Marci-Michaelis Bousquet, 1742.⁂ The exceptionally excellent Honeyman copy of the collected works of Bernoulli, complete with both portraits (often lacking). Virtually all of Bernoulli's work was published in journals: the first edition of Jean Bernoulli's collected works brings together 189 of his papers and 59 of his lectures. Volume I is primarily devoted to problems in geometry and the early calculus, but also contains papers on muscular mechanics, the resistance of solids, and a geometrical demonstration of the motion of pendulums and projectiles in resisting and unresisting media. Volumes II & III are almost totally devoted to problems of mechanics, the first of these containing his theoretical essay on the maneuvering of vessels and related papers, as well as numerous contributions on the analysis of trajectories. His discourse on the laws governing the communication of movement opens volume III, which also contains his essay on celestial mechanics. The final volume contains contributions on the curvature of elastic plates, his mechanico-dynamical propositions, and problems in dynamics. Most important, its appearance in this volume represents the first printing of the Hydraulica, which was written in competition with his son (Bibliotheca Mechanica).

Lot 37

Regiomontanus (Johannes Müller) De triangulis planis et sphaericis libri quinque..., second edition, collation: *4 a-o6 p8 : *6 A4 B-Z6 AA6 BB4 CC6, woodcut device to title, engraved historiated initials and woodcut illustrations, 20th century ink provenance note and bookplate to pastedown, first few ff. damp-stained, title with small repairs and reinforced at inner margin, short marginal tears to N¹ and N³ not affecting text, final ff. browned and repaired, occasional light spotting and browning, contemporary vellum, spine with manuscript title in raised bands (mostly chipped away), small contemporary labels to spine and cover, partially removed, [Adams R-281; Norman 1566], tall 8vo (315 x 210mm), Basel, Heinrich Petri & Peter Perna, [1561].⁂ The second, much augmented edition of the first systematic treatise on plane and spherical trigonometry to be published in Europe. Though it was completed in 1464, it remained a manuscript until 1533 where it was first published in Nuremberg by Johann Petri. Regiomontanus's monumental work on triangles was the first printed systematization of the subject as a branch of mathematics independent of astronomy, and contains the earliest statement of the cosine law for spherical triangles, stating the proportionality of the sides of a plane triangle to the sines of the opposite angle. This fundamental proposition of spherical trigonometry appears as theorem 2 in book V of the treatise. In the second part, Regiomontanus proves the errors of Nicolaus de Cusa's theory of squaring the circle, which had a profound effect on the history of navigation (Adams). His contributions were instrumental in the development of Copernican heliocentrism in the decades following his death.

Lambert (Johann Heinrich) Les propriétés remarquables de la route de la lumière par les airs et en général par plusieurs milieux réfringens sphériques et concentriques, avec la solution des problèmes qui y ont rapport..., first edition, 2 folding engraved plates, endpapers lightly browned with very small contemporary ink numbers to pastedown, occasional spotting, contemporary calf, a little marked and discoloured, joint slightly cracking, 8vo, The Hague, H. Scheurleer, 1758.⁂ Scarce first edition of Lambert's first published book, discussing the path of light rays in air and other media. Lambert began working on aspects of refraction through the atmosphere in 1752, and from 1754 this work was carried out in parallel with his work on photometry. The book is divided into three parts: 'Les propriétés générales de la route, qui la lumière prend, en passant par des milieux réfringens, sphériques et concentriques'; 'Des réfractions astronomiques, de la manière de les déterminer par approximation aussi exactement que l'on voudra, et de leur rapport à divers autres problèmes'; and 'Des réfractions circulaires, de leur usage pour la détermination des réfractions terrestres: et de divers autres problèmes dépendant des réfractions tant astronomiques que terrestres'. Remarkably, during the entire period 1756-58 Lambert was traveling through northern Europe and so carried with him a small library. Lambert mentions that he is working on another work in optics and promises to publish it soon - this would eventually be his Photometria. COPAC lists only the Royal Society copy.Provenance: Title page with ex-libris of great mathematician and engineer Gaspard de Prony (1755-1839).

Mathematics.- Bettini (Mario) Aerarium Philosophiae Mathematicae..., 7 parts in 3 vol., bound in 2, first edition, on thick paper, 2 only (of 3) additional engraved titles by Francesco Curti to vol. I & II, 2 engraved portraits of bishops Madruzzi & Zeccadori, engraved plate of genealogical tree, 3 engraved plates tipped onto margins of text leaves, woodcut and engraved illustrations, second additional title trimmed at foot, just within plate mark, affecting the engraver's name, some marginal browning to ff. with folding plates mounted verso, a few spots, engraved Macclesfield bookplates, contemporary Dutch vellum, blind-stamped centre-pieces, spines darkened with some creasing and soiling, lacking ties, [Riccardi I, 125; Sommervogel I, 1428], large 4to, Bologna, G. B. Ferroni, 1648.⁂A crisp and clean copy on thick paper of this rare compendious scholastic mathematical work by the Jesuit Bettini (1582-1657). It encompasses all the major fields of mathematics, with special attention paid to Geometry, including Astronomical Geometry. The work would have passed through the rigorous censorship of Christopher Grienberg of the Collegio Romano, where Aristotelian teachings were adhered to. He had succeeded Christopher Cluvius, who had been the prime mover in establishing mathematics in the curriculum of the college and had greatly influenced future Jesuit mathematical writings. It is not known how much of the work can be accredited to Grienberg, but it is clear that the mechanical and measuring devices illustrating the work must be by him. Indeed, Bettini acknowledges the debt to him in the Scholion Parergicon in the present work.Provenance: The Earls of Macclesfield, Shirburn Castle (blind stamp to first three ff., bookplates to pastedown).

In the field of real analysis, he is known for the first rigorous formulation of the integral - the Riemann integral - and his work on Fourier series. Moreover his contributions to complex analysis include his notable introduction of Riemann Surfaces, first put forward in this thesis. This paper and its sequel, 'Theorie der Abelschen Functionen' (1857), are lauded as some of the most important achievements of analytic number theory, and through his pioneering findings in differential geometry, Reimann laid the foundations for the mathematics of general relativity. Only a few copies were printed for private distribution, and only 3 copies of his dissertation have appeared at auction over the last 30 years.

Plutarch. Quae extant opera, 7 vol., Greek portion only (i.e. without the Latin translation), vol.7 with Appendix but not 'Index rerum et verborum' at end, Greek, Roman and italic type, woodcut device on title of vol.1, lacking some blank leaves but textually complete, some browning and occasional foxing, ink inscription in upper margin of first leaf of text in each vol. erased leaving slight stain, later vellum, gilt, green morocco spine labels, Ugo Foscolo's copy with ink corrections on 2 leaves in vol. 6 and some underlining in red pencil, 8vo (174 x 105mm.), [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1572.⁂ An exceptional set of the Greek portion of the first complete edition of Plutarch's works, edited by Henri Estienne "avec correction et elegance" (Renouard), and once owned by the outstanding Italian poet and patriot Ugo Foscolo. Foscolo's interest in the 'divine Plutarchus' was exemplified in his famous epistolary novel Le ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis, in which Plutarch's works are the beloved reading of the main character. Foscolo began to write the Discorsi sopra gli uomini illustri di Plutarco at the beginning of the nineteenth century, but only the Proemio or Preface, dated 1 January 1801, was completed. His library was bought by his friend Quirina Mocenni Magiotti in 1816, when Foscolo decided on a self-imposed exile in London, and later it mostly came into the possession of the Biblioteca Marucelliana in Florence.Provenance: the Italian poet Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827; white wax-stamp with the initials 'L.F.' on front pastedown of vol.1; loose paper slip inserted bearing ms. note 'N. 1552 du Catalogue de la Bibliothèque du Monsignor Foscolo vendu par autorité de justice de la Depositeria urbana pas le Ministere de libre Agazzi.
