[Burton (Sir Richard Francis)] The Kasidah (couplets) of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî: A Lay of the Higher Law, translated and annotated by his friend and pupil, F.B., first edition, first issue without publisher and date on title, later half morocco, gilt, with the original printed yellow wrappers bound in (lightly soiled), t.e.g., spine faded, slightly rubbed at edges, small stains to upper cover, [Penzer pp.97], 4to, privately printed [for Bernard Quaritch], [1880].⁂ Rare work written by Burton but purporting to be a translation of an original Persian Sufi text. Both first and second issues were published by Bernard Quaritch in 1880 for the use of the author and his friends. Few copies of the first issue were sold (possibly fewer than 100) and the remainders were returned to Burton or members of his circle.

Adams (Robert) The Narrative of Robert Adams, a Sailor, who was Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa...was Detained Three Years in Slavery by the Arabs of the Great Desert, and Resided Several Months in the City of Tombuctoo, first edition, folding engraved map with routes supplied by hand in blue and yellow, from the library of Louis-Philippe King of the French at Neuilly with small ink library stamp "Bibliotheque du Roi Neuilly" to title, contemporary ink inscription in French to head of title, light water-staining or cockling to upper margin of some leaves, contemporary half roan, by René Simier, handsome gilt spine with coat-of-arms of Louis-Philippe at head and monogram "LPO" at foot, signed at foot, rubbed, 4to, 1816.⁂ One of the few accounts of a white man sold into slavery, and one of the earliest descriptions of the city of Timbuctoo. The work was initially thought to be a hoax but details were verified by both Banks and Barrow.Louis-Philippe, King of the French (1773-1850) ruled France from 1830-48, when he was forced to abdicate and flee to England. The books from his various libraries were sold at auction in 1852-3.René Simier (1772-1843) was one of the foremost French bookbinders of the 19th century and was appointed bookbinder to the King.

Undertaken at the Request of the Missionary Society, first edition, ?lacking half-title, with hand-coloured engraved portrait, folding hand-coloured engraved map, 9 engraved plates, 7 hand-coloured, a few contemporary ink marginalia, plates lightly offset but otherwise a very clean copy, modern half brown calf, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label, [Abbey, Travel 323], 8vo, 1815.⁂ A fine coloured copy of this survey of the missions in southern Africa. The frontispiece, hand-coloured in this copy although not called for as such by Abbey, "shows Campbell against a background of South African scenery: he is holding an umbrella, an object not usually the emblem of an explorer". Mary, Queen of Scots.- [Blackwood (Adam)] Martyre de la Royne d'Escosse, douariere de France, collation: ã8 A-2H8, first edition, with final leaf of verse and final blank, woodcut initials, early ink inscription date 1636 to title, light water-staining to a few leaves at foot, one or two head-lines slightly shaved, engraved bookplate of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle, handsome eighteenth-century red morocco, covers with ornamental gilt roll border, spine gilt in compartments, black roan label, g.e., slightly rubbed, spine a little faded and worn at head, one corner bumped, [STC 3107], 8vo (161 x 106mm), "Edimbourg " [Paris], Jean Nafeild, 1587.⁂ Fine copy of this attack on the detractors of Mary Queen of Scots, by the Catholic polemicist Adam Blackwood (1539-1613). Born in Dunfermline, Blackwood was educated in Paris and spent most of his adult life on the Continent. However, his loyalty to the tragic queen of his homeland, who had supported his early studies, was unwavering and he continued to publish attacks on Knox and others throughout the rest of the century. Despite the imprint the work was published in Paris and there were subsequent reprints with the same imprint, either in Antwerp or Paris, during the next few years.Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (1720-94), known as "the handsomest man in England", creator of Clumber Park, Notts., and of the Clumber spaniel.

The Banque Générale was mostly funded by Law and Louis XV, and one year later was nationalised at the request of Law, becoming the Banque Royale. Funded by this organisation Law bought and directed the infamous Mississippi Company, which produced an economic bubble that was soon thereafter to burst.

Tracing its origins to 1471, the Museo Capitolino was opened to the public in 1734 by Pope Clement XII, and is considered to be the first public museum in the world.
