Andrew D Bird. A Separate Little War, The Banff Coastal command Strike Wing Versus The Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe September 1944 To May 1945. a WW2 First Edition hardback book in good condition. Signed by the Author and 6 Bomber Command veterans Pilots:- Bert Graham 143 sqdn , John Haddock 143 sqdn, Pat Hollins 235 sqdn, Ray Harrington 235 sqdn, Bert Winwood 235 sqdn and one other. 234 pages. Bert Graham joined the RAF in 1941 and was immediately posted to a pilot training station in Torquay, Devon. After passing his final exams he then went on to fly Tiger Moths, before being posted to RAF Brize Norton flying Oxfords. In 1942 Bert transferred to start flying with 143 Squadron on Blenheims, but quickly moved on to Beaufighters with the North Coates Strike Wing. For his second tour Bert was posted to Scotland flying Mosquitos, where, before the end of hostilities, he completed many port and shipping strikes over Norway and occupied Europe. Pat Hollins become a navigator and joins 235 Squadron where he flies in numerous combat missions in the de Havilland Mosquito. He recalls one day where they sunk 3 U-Boats. Ray Harrington joined the RAF in 1941, completing his training in South Africa. In January 1944 he was posted to 603 Squadron flying Beaufighters in North Africa. Here he teamed up with navigator, Warrant Officer A.E. ‘Bert’ Winwood, and from where they launched attacks across the Mediterranean into Crete, Greece and the Aegean Islands against shipping, harbour installations and enemy aircraft with much success. In December 1944 they were posted to 235 Squadron Coastal Command, part of the Banff Strike Wing, converting to Mosquitos. In April 1945 they were shot down following a strike in the Kattegat, but avoided capture and with the help of the Danish resistance made it home, where they continued to fly again from Banff. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
