Mabb, for William Shears, 1654, separate title to each part (parts 2 & 4, A Perfect Platform of a Hop-Garden / The Art of Angling, both dated 1653), parts 3 and 4 with separate pagination and register, some wood engravings to text of first two parts, 22 full-page engravings to third part (The Expert Gardener), edges stained yellow, 19th-century blue half calf gilt over marbled boards with contrasting spine labels, slightly rubbed, 4to (180 x 135 mm)QTY: (1)NOTE:Westwood & Satchell pp. 66-67; Wing B783, 784, C1700, S946.A rare complete copy of Barker's treatise on garden horticulture, including the important fourth part, a pre-Waltonian section devoted to angling. This is the second edition of that treatise which was first published in 1651 and is of legendary rarity in that edition. Barker, who made a living as an angling tutor, suggested that ‘fishing far surpasses all other recreations in promoting health and pleasure. The text offers much hard practical advice on fish species, tackle and bait, together with recipes, including pike with stewed oysters, and employs a successful formula for angling writing which has been much copied subsequently’ (ODNB).

The English botanist and fern specialist Thomas Moore (1821-87) published various botanical and garden journals and was curator of the Apothecaries' Company's Garden at Chelsea from 1848 (later renamed the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1875). The Viennese A. Auer had claimed the discovery of self-printing for himself, but 100 years earlier the Dane P. Kyhl described this method for the first time, while individual examples are known in Europe found in early 15th century manuscripts. H. Bradbury learnt the process in the Vienna State Printing Office and protected the process as his own. Bradbury's detailed works are among the most beautiful of this elaborate, unusually lifelike and rare technique. "This magnificent work shows the plants, often with the roots, in various stages of development, so that the 51 plates contain 240 individual representations that were printed in the natural colours. 102 whole plants and 1387 branches are shown, the latter including broken ones which measure up to 85 cm when unfolded." (Fischer).

'During much of the 1690s Ray was engaged in correspondence with Edward Lhwyd and others about the nature of fossils. In general he was inclined to accept that they were the remains of once-living creatures, and he also suggested that their current distribution might owe something to observable changes in the nature of the surface of the earth. He qualified these opinions, however, by stressing that the fossils which had so far been discovered were not unlike known plants and animals, and that their burial might owe something to the action of the biblical flood, as well as to natural effects. He argued that those remains which seemed to be unfamiliar might represent species of which the surviving representatives had not yet been discovered' (ONDB).

Prüss], 16 Jan. 1511). 280 unnumb. lvs. W. large woodcut with the Ship of Fools on ti. & 112 almost page-sized woodcuts after Albrecht Dürer (a.o.), mostly flanked by woodcut foliate border pieces. 4°. Cont. half blindtooled pigskin over wooden brds. w. brass clasps. (Small piece of wood of back cover and calf of 1 clasp renewed, the other clasp loosely added, libr. tickets on spine, tiny wormholes in binding and throughout the book (espec. at beginning and end), 2 small stamps, old owner's entry on ti., some marg. annot. & underl. in an old hand, piece of lower blank margin of S2 renewed, margins a bit stained/soiled in a few places, but a good and complete copy). NOTE:Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg (1445-1510) was called "the German Savonarola", one of the greatest of the popular preachers of the 15th c. His sermons delivered at Strassburg were structured on the immensely popular 'Navis Stultifera'/'Narrenschiff', written by his friend and fellow humanist Sebastian Brant and first published in 1494. The book contains 110 sermons which are based on 110 types of fools. The woodcuts used for the 'Navicula' were originally commissioned for the 'Ship of fools', which includes 73 woodcuts now recognised as the work of the young Albrecht Dürer (cf. Winkler, Dürer und die Illustrationen zum Narrenschiff, 1951). - Second Latin edition. HELIODORUS. Les amours de Theagene et Chariclee. Histoire Ethiopique. Trad. nouv. [by Jehan de Montlyard]. 2e éd. Paris, S. Thiboust, 1626, (2), 806, (18) pp. W. engr. title-p. and 52 plates by Michel Lasne, J. Briot, Crispin de Passe etc. after Daniel Rabel. Cont. cf., both covers with double gilt fillet border, gilt and ribbed spine. (Bind. sl. worn at spine-ends and lacking spine label, ti.-p. restored in lower right corner and w. 2 tiny wormholes, vaguely waterst. at the beginning and occas. sl. foxed/browned, a few marg. defects such as sm. tears, endpapers renewed, but in all, an acceptable copy). NOTE:From the library of the French etcher Emmanuel Phelippes-Beaulieux (Nantes, 1829-1874), with his engr. bookplate on upper pastedown and a tipped-in 2-page description by him in pen between the two free endpapers at the beginning. The rare second edition of this French translation (first: 1623), beautifully illustrated. Heliodorus of Emesa, a Greek writer from the 3rd/4th century, is known for his Aithiopika (Latin: Aethiopica), one of the most famous works of antiquity, endlessly republished or imitated and a great source of inspiration for authors of the Middle-Ages and later.

SOUTER LIEDEKE(N)S, ghemaect ter eeren Gods op alle die Psalmen va(n) David: tot stichtinghe en een gheestelike vermakinghe van allen Christe(n) Mensche(n). Antw., S. Cock, 1540 (June 12th). (4), 182 lvs. (Tog. 192 lvs. (24 sheets: a4, A-Z8, a4), some mistakes in pagination). W. woodcut representation of King David playing the harp on ti-p., ti. & text printed in red & black, w. num. music scores in text. Sm-8°. Later vellum w. overl. sides. (Middle part of last leaf cut out (line 9-14), part of leaf A1 (=fol. 1) rep. w. text added in manuscript, first lvs. a bit thumbed/soiled, a few marg. stains, margins cut). NOTE:The metrical rhyming psalms were probably arranged by a Utrecht nobleman, Willem van Zuylen van Nijevelt (d. 1543). For the melodies he used popular folksongs from the Low Countries (though some have German or French origin). The fact that the melodies of the songs were added to the texts makes this compilation a very important source. - Very rare second version of the first edition of the oldest rhimed version of the psalms in Dutch. - Nijhoff/Kronenberg 1916; Scheurleer, Souterliedekens II (pp. 32-34); not in Adams, not in Machiels. 1 copy present (KB) in NCC/STCN.
