First edition 2 parts in 1 volume 4to. modern quarter calf marbled boards light water staining of the upper margins and some spotting. Note: Moule 479. By 1725 the Order of the Bath had fallen into disuse the last creation being at the coronation of Charles II. Wagner suggests that the main object behind Anstis' revival was to ingratiate himself with the Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. "Anstis had the happy inspiration of reviving this ancient name and its chivalric associations but attaching it as had never been before to an Order or company of knights like the Order of the Garter fixed in number with statutes a Great Master officers a chapel and special precedence. Its attraction for Walpole was the same which its dozens of successors in the eighteenth nineteenth and twentieth centuries have since had for every government in the world that it enabled him to gratify valued adherents at no cost to himself The thing was admirably done. Anstis in a small octavo volume of Observations printed almost everything that research has been able to discover about the antiquities of the subject. He drafted the Statutes and Ceremonial and upon the 27th of May 1725 the Great Master and twenty eight Companions were knighted and invested with the ribbon and badge of the Order. Commenting on Pickering's involvement with works elaborately illustrated with engravings coloured by hand or produced in colours from stone Keynes rather discouragingly observes "These somewhat repellent books culminate in the pretentious splendour of Drummond's Histories. Their production must have entailed an immense output of effort by their authors and some volumes doubtless made a great advance in the craft of printing in colour but they do not seem to carry much weight at the present time as works of authority on the subjects with which they deal and typographically they are of small account.". The families are: Ashburnham Arden Crompton Cecil Harley Bruce Perceval Dunbar Hume Dundas Drummond & Neville. Provenance: With the book-plate of Thomas Brooke FSA of Armitage Bridge.

Favyn André. The theater of honour and knight-hood or a compendious chronicle and historie of the whole Christian world containing the original of all monarches kingdomes and estates with their emperours kings princes and governours the first institution of armes emblazons kings heralds and pursuivants of armes. Note: Moule 111; STC 10717. First published in Paris in 1620 the work "comprises the most valuable treatise we have in English upon the Foreign orders of knighthood; there are other discussions upon the Ceremonies Combats Precedence &c. equally worth the attention of the antiquary and historian." (Moule). The work has an additional significance in that its execution took place alongside the production of the Shakespeare first folio and therefore plays an important part in studying its production and printing. The Theater was entered in the Stationers' Register on 23 October 1622 but printing probably began in February-March 1622 at the same time as work began on the Shakespeare Folio and that it was finished at the sane time as F1. The Theater shares not only the same format with the First Folio but certain ornaments and rules in particular the "Satyr" ornament. The different states of the types and ornaments in both F1 and the Theater are an important guide to the printing of the First Folio. (see Hinmann Printing and proof-reading of the First Folio Shakespeare p. 36 etc.) For example Peter Blaney (The First Folio) records an F1 page which has picked up a distinct image from the press's tympan of an engraving used in the Theater.
Family Histories by Sir William Fraser. "By his elaborate compilations on Scottish family history Sir William Fraser has placed subsequent students of Scottish history under permanent obligations to him. Undertaken at the expense of the representatives of the historic families whose fortunes they chronicle their aim is circumscribed and their tone as well as many of their conclusions more or less biased by their special purpose; but through his free access to charter chests and family papers of all kinds he obtained the means of shedding new light on at least many minor points of general Scottish history; and if his views do not always commend themselves to the impartial student the industry of his research is undeniable. His method was dry-as-dustish even when it need not have been so his narrative is cold and tame and on strictly historical matters he is frequently weak and commonplace; but by the aid of assistants whose labours he directed and utilised he has placed within the reach of the general student of Scottish history a large amount of new and well-authenticated information. The volumes are also of great interest for their illustrations: family portraits representations of old seals facsimiles of old documents &c." (DNB). Over the years Sheriff Bogie acquired a substantial proportion of Fraser's publications which are hard to find as all were published privately in limited numbers usually 150 for distribution amongst the family and friends of those who commissioned them. Their intrinsic interest to the family historian and genealogist apart many of them are remarkable pieces of Victorian book production lavishly illustrated with extensive use of chromo lithography (the work of Lizars W.H. Macfarlane W. Banks & Sons etc.) particularly in the reproduction of documents and clearly with no expense spared by Fraser to his wealthy patrons. Doubtless in part due to the recent popularity of genealogy and family history these works have become harder to find. Fraser Sir William. The Stirlings of Keir and their family papers.
