Betsy Blair played the role of Agnes Webster in the film adaptation, and at the time Gene was negotiating the leading role of Sweeney in the Trees. Kelly was a friend and admirer of Saroyan, describing him as "a big bruiser, as regular as they come, and looks like a contended iceman".

Printed almost simultaneously with the first limited edition printed in Mexico, this edition features illustrations by the painter José Venturelli and a foreword by the president of the Chilean Communist Party, Galo Gonzalez. The imprint is false, "Imprenta Juárez, Reforma 75, Ciudad de México D.F." so as to to keep it underground.
