Pekin to Paris by Barzini (Luigi). An Account of Prince Borghese's Journey across two Continents in a Motor-Car. First English Edition, published by E. Grant Richards, London, 645pp, 1907. A Presentation Copy from the Translator, Miss L. P. de Castelvecchio to the Hon. W. Warren Vernon, with an ink inscription in the top corner of the half-title and with an additional message on the reverse of the translator's business card, tipped in at the same point. A thick octavo volume, the navy blue cloth covers with gilt lettering and a four-colour pictorial panel on the front cover being rubbed and marked, with some wear to the spine and the joint between the photographic frontispiece and title page having been repaired with tape. A little dusty internally and with some page browning and scattered foxing throughout, but generally sound otherwise. Top edge gilt, front edge of the pages uncut, 645 pages, numerous black-and-white photographic illustrations, and a coloured folding map at the rear. Introduction by Prince Borghese. Together with a very good copy of the First German Edition of the book, Peking - Paris im Automobil - Eine Wettfahrt durch Asien and Europa in sechzig Tagen, published in Leipzig in 1908 by F. A. The Automobile edited by Paul Hasluck, fourth and final English edition (first being 1902), published by Cassell 1909. Three volumes in red simulated crocodile, gilt-blocked. Volume 1 with a dissected foldout frontispiece, 480pp, Volume 2, 451pp, Volume 3, 412pp, 6 1/4 x 8 3/4-inches. The subtitle, 'A Practical Treatise on the Construction of Modern Motor Cars, Steam, Petrol, Electric and Petrol-Electric' sums up the contents. Profusely illustrated, detailed line drawings a feature, fair condition. The text sequence of the Hasluck series is confusing, with an extended version of the list of 'petrol pleasure cars available in Great Britain' now forming Vol. I, with its own index. The main body of text is now Vols. II and III, with the index for both in Volume III. Pagination runs continuously through volumes II and III with Vol. I independently paginated. (3)

A horizontal format (26 x 34cm) volume, the 'Deuxieme Collection' in the 'Encyclopedie Calberson de la Locomotion', with dust jacket over board covers, a Preface in French by Andre de Fouquieres and further text by the Editor, Thibault de Champrosay, 'En Souvenir de nos Premieres Voitures', and holding sixteen delightful coloured lithographic prints by Guy Sabran showing French automobiles (Panhard Levassor, Peugeot, Delahaye, Renault, etcetera) dating between 1878 and 1911 in city, town and country settings. The edge of the outer margin of the last plate is slightly feathered, otherwise the volume is in very good condition, held in a slightly worn, marked and rubbed card slipcase. A Record of Grand Prix and Voiturette Racing. Six hardback quarto volumes in this series compiled by Paul Sheldon assisted by Duncan Rabagliati (and others). The volumes here, all uniformy bound in black cloth with silver lettering to the front cover and spines, comprise: Vol. 1 (1900-1925); Vol. 2 (1926-1931); Vol. 4 (1937-1949); Vol. 5 (1950-1953); Vol. 6 (1954-1959); and Vol. 9 (1970-1973). All are in very good condition and First Editions, Volume 9 with a certificate on the front paste-down end-paper, signed by Sheldon and Rabagliati, recording the volume as Number 296 of a limited edition of 500 copies. De Rota (Photographer): Two horizontal format (25 x 28cm) hardback volumes in dust jackets, plus a similar format paperback (Rankings 1911-1971 and Entry List 1926-1971), the three held in a sturdy slipcase, of the First Edition, 2003, of a major work celebrating the history of the Trieste-Opicina Motor Car Races and especially the photography of Adriano De Rota. The hardbacks have red cloth covers with white lettering to the spines, map end-papers and a total of 496 pages; the paperback volume has 96 pages. Ampere (Andre-Marie). This double task was undertaken in the years 1821-1825, and his success was reported in his greatest work... In this work, the Principia of electrodynamics, Ampere first described the laws of action of electric currents..' (DSB). Ampere presented the work to the Academic des Sciences in 1823, and it was printed, under the title "Memoire sur la theorie mathematique des phenomenes Electro-dynamiques", on pp. 177-387 of Vol. VI of the Memoires de l'Academie des Sciences. 'As Vol. VI was the volume for 1823 this date appears on the first page of each signature as an identifying mark for the printer; the whole volume, however, was not published until late in 1827... In the meantime the author's separate was prepared; the last twelve pages were reset and extended to eighteen; the work was repaginated and re-signed; and the '1823' was removed from lower margins (except on sig. 21 where it remained on all copies and on sig. 12 where, together with the original periodical pagination, it remained in a few copies, but was corrected during printing).
