Crowley (Aleister) Ambergris. A Selection from the Poems, first edition, portrait frontispiece, Betty May's copy with pencil note of provenance to endpaper, original boards, lettered in gilt, spine a little browned, spine ends and corners a little bumped, rubbed, 8vo, Elkin Mathews, 1910.⁂ An interesting association copy of this scarce collection. The pencil note states "This copy belonged to Mrs. Betty Sedgewick, formerly one of Jacob Epstein's Models. She gave evidence in the case of Crowley v. Hamnett in April 1934". Betty Sedgwick was better known as Betty May (1894-?1980) was a bohemian dancer and model who led an eventful life. Her third husband, Frederick Loveday, became an acolyte of Crowley's. The pair travelled to Sicily and took part in some of Crowley's rituals, although May only tentatively in order to avoid being thrown out of Crowley's Abbey and separated from her husband. She was the principle witness in the Crowley's libel suit against Nina Hamnett, testifying on behalf of the defence to witnessing the ritual sacrifice of a cat during one of Crowley's ceremonies.

Félibien's illustrated folio Description de l'Eglise Royal des Invalides was published when the church was consecrated in 1706, at the same time this work was reissued by Quillau with a second part. WorldCat lists only 3 copies of this 1702 edition.Nils Esbjörnson Reuterholm (1676-1756), governor of Dalarna in Sweden 1732-39 and of Örebro 1739-56, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences from the year of its foundation in 1739.

[Catalogue of Paints & Varnishes], limited edition "counter book", 46pp., most with mounted samples of paints, enamels, and varnishes for houses, boats, cars etc., a few missing, acetate guards (some frayed), a little browned, original ring-bound pictorial cloth, lacking rings, loose, rubbed, Valentine & Company, [New York], [1930s] § Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Glass Paints, Varnishes and Brushes: Their History, Manufacture and Use, colour samples and illustrations, 3 leaves loose and frayed at edges, a little stained at end, original cloth, rubbed, Pittsburgh, 1923, oblong folio & 4to (2)⁂ Valspar originated as a paint dealership in 1806 in Boston, becoming manufacturers under the name Valentine & Company in 1832. In 1903 the company developed "Valspar", the world's first clear varnish, which became their signature line and led to the advertising slogan "the varnish that won't turn white", even offering a $1000 reward if it did. This catalogue was obviously a shop's sample book, containing a label made out to "Mr.W.G.Frizzell of Albany NY" on the rear pastedown.

Ballooning.- Hampton (John) Disclosures relating to the loss of Mr.Hampton's Albion Balloon, together with the particulars of a New & Splendid Balloon, 16pp., only edition, stitched, a little soiled, lightly creased, 8vo, W.Snell, 1844.⁂ John Hampton made the first successful parachute descent by an Englishman in Cheltenham in 1838. Having been instructed to keep the balloon tethered, Hampton severed the rope and ascended in his balloon to approximately 9000ft whereupon he cut his parachute loose and returned to the ground twelve minutes later, proving his naysayers wrong, in particular the celebrated rival aeronaut Charles Green. Hampton describes the adventure in this pamphlet and attacks Green for tricking him out of possession of his Albion balloon, which Green purchased direct from the manufacturer while Hampton was in financial straits. Very rare. Not listed by Library Hub; WorldCat records no copies in libraries but does list it with an OCLC reference number.

Ballooning.- Turnor (Hatton) Astra Castra: Experiments and Adventures in the Atmosphere, first edition, the author's son Christopher H.Turnor's copy inscribed "from his friend Annie Dixon September 1894" and with long manuscript quotation on front free endpaper, with 3 postcards showing the author and the French aviator Henri Salmet loosely inserted, plates and illustrations, mounted albumen print to dedication (as issued), spotting at beginning and end, contemporary painted vellum brushed in silver, upper cover with small foil onlays (some missing), inner gilt dentelles, g.e., rubbed, spine faded, 1865; and 2 others including another, imperfect, copy of the first, 4to (3)⁂ Comprehensive account of aeronautics up to the time, mostly concerning ballooning. The interesting quotation from Jesse Collings's Land Reform concerns the ownership of air and the potential hazards of air travel, "...if the discoveries of science should make aerial travel practicable - as some say they will - then owners could legally charge a toll for every aerial machine passing over their land...".The loosely-inserted postcards (2 actual photographs) show "Mr.Hatten Turner preparing for Flight with Mr.Salmet Nov.22 1913", "Mr. Hatten Turner with Mr.Salmet in Flying Machine..." and "H.Salmet on his 50 H.P. Bleriot Monoplane...". Henri Salmet was an early French aviator who, in 1912 & 1913, was sponsored by The Daily Mail to tour Britain and take up passengers on short flights. Christopher H.Turnor (1873-1940), author, architect and agricultural reformer. He trained under Lutyens, designed the Watts Gallery for his friend the painter George Frederic Watts, and invented the cattle grid.?Possibly Annie Dixon (1817-1901), miniature portrait painter, known particularly for her portraits of several of Queen Victoria's children.

Austen, 1738.⁂ Important treatise on perspective which influenced both Kirby and Malton, and unusually found unbound and intact with the blank leaves of the plate bifolia (intended to be discarded when bound up with the text).

The Appendix relates the case of the Hon. Horace Walpole, younger brother of Sir Robert Walpole and uncle of Horace Walpole of Strawberry Hill.

Mercuriale is mostly known for his work on gymnastics and the importance of exercise for health, first published in 1569.

Bacon and Hams, first edition, chromolithographed frontispiece of a pig with 14 ever-diminishing fold-out flaps showing the skeleton and anatomy down to piglets in the womb, plates, signed presentation copy from the author to "Her Royal Highness The Princess Mary on the occasion of Her Marriage, February 28th, 1922..." inscribed on front free endpaper, bound in white pigskin ruled in gilt, inner gilt dentelles, g.e., a little rubbed and soiled, small stain to foot of upper cover, large 8vo, Institute of Certificated Grocers, 1917.⁂ Princess Mary (1897-1965), later the Princess Royal, was the only daughter of George V and Queen Mary. She married Henry Lascelles, later 6th Earl of Harewood, in 1922. During the First World War she trained as a nurse and actively supported the Girl Guides, the VADs and the Land Girls.This rather curious wedding present (one wonders how useful the Princess found it) includes an illustration of the author in fancy dress as a side of bacon.
