It includes 'the first bibliography of Malay books by Europeans and indigenious authors' (Landwehr VOC 759).
Ricardo (David) On the Principles of Political Economy, and Taxation, second edition, occasional foxing and damp-staining, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, lacking spine, corners worn, [Kress C401; Goldsmiths 22322], 8vo, John Murray, 1819.⁂ A good copy of Ricardo's key work on Economics, first published in 1817. His exact mathematical approach and deductive methods influenced succeeding generations of economists in the fields of currency, banking, and political thought, and was so dubbed one of the world's first "scientific economists" (PMM)
Immigration.- Turgot (Anne-Robert-Jacques).- Tucker (Josiah) Questions Importantes sur le Commerce, a l'occasion des oppositions au dernier Bill de Naturalisation, translated by Turgot, first edition in French, half-title, a few ink corrections to text in neat contemporary hand, marbled wrappers (previously extracted from a bound volume of pamphlets), preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, [Goldsmiths' 9023], 12mo, "Londres" [?Paris], Fletcher Gyles, 1755.⁂ Turgot's important translation of the second part of Tucker's Reflections on the Expediency of a Law for the Naturalization of Foreign Protestants of 1751. The question of naturalisation of foreigners in Britain had caused serious debate for several decades, with the general populace being fervently against immigration while the government was for it. Tucker supported the official line with Turgot wishing to reform the French thinkers. ESTC lists only 4 UK copies (BL, 2 copies at Trinity College Cambridge, and LSE).
Linguistics.- Webb (John) An Historical Essay endeavoring a Probability that the Language of the Empire of China is the Primitive Language, first edition, title in red and black, with the errata leaf and final blank at end but lacking the folding engraved map (as often), title browned and lightly soiled, book-label of "Henry Massingberd, Gunby 1781" (paste-down leaf detached), contemporary calf, rubbed, a little stained, spine repaired at head, split to foot of upper joint, corners worn, [Alston III 781; Wing W1202], 8vo, for Nath. Brook, 1669.⁂ Treatise on the supposed original language spoken by Adam and Eve, by the architect John Webb, a pupil of Inigo Jones.

Aeronautics.- Balloons.- Brisson (Mathurin Jacques) Observations sur les Nouvelles Découvertes Aërostatiques, et sur la probabilité de pouvoir diriger les Ballons, first edition, title with woodcut ornament, spotted, occasional staining, lightly browned, antique style calf-backed marbled boards, [Tissandier p.16; Genesis of Flight p.81 (English edition)], Paris, Le Boucher & Lamy, 1784; and the first French edition of Cavallo's history of ballooning, 1786, small 4to & 8vo (2)⁂ The first mentioned includes a report on Montgolfier's balloon, a description of a steering method for balloons, and a dictionary of ballooning terminology.
Hawking & Hunting.- Turberville (George) The Booke of Falconrie or Hawking..., second edition, issue with catchword "of" on A1r, 1611; The Noble Art of Venerie or Hunting, second edition, 1611, together 2 works in 1 vol., printed in black letter, woodcut title vignettes, the first showing the Earl of Warwick in hunting costume, numerous woodcut illustrations, some full-page, the first work with final blank, the second with initial blank and 4pp. bugle calls with musical notation at end, with contemporary ink manuscript recipes to endpapers and a few annotations to text (first leaf frayed and defective), both titles cropped affecting imprint (loss of date to first, shaved on second), first title with ink smudge, occasional browning or soiling, some light water-staining, becoming loose in binding, contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, rubbed and slightly stained, preserved in old cloth drop-back box (rubbed & repaired), [Schwerdt II, 271-272; STC 24325 & 24329], 4to, by Thomas Purfoot⁂ Two of the most important hawking and hunting works of the 16th century, first published in 1575, and nearly always found together. The first work is an adaptation of the works of Giorgi, Carcano, Tardif and Artelouche; the second (sometimes attributed to George Gascoigne) is essentially a translation of Du Fouilloux's La Venerie. Some of the woodcuts contain portraits of the monarch and these have been altered from Queen Elizabeth I in the 1575 editions to King James I in those of 1611, although that on p.112 of the first work still features part of Elizabeth's riding habit.
Italy.- Venice.- Zompini (Gaetano) Le arti che vanno per via nella città di Venezia, third edition, engraved title, frontispiece, 60 plates and index f., without the letterpress Life of the Author (as often), plates captioned in Italian with English translations on slips pasted below, frontispiece and title repaired and restored at foot, frontispiece with tear to lower margin, plate 6 with neatly repaired tear running into image, occasional spotting, mostly marginal, early 20th century calf-backed boards, joints cracked, extremities a little rubbed, uncut, folio, Venice, 1785 [but London, 1787].⁂ The third edition (and the first to be printed outside Italy) of this engaging depiction of Venetian citizens and tradespeople.
Huysmans (Joris-Karl) Les Foules de Lourdes, first edition, number 7 of 10 copies on 'papier du Japon', title and colophon f. in red and black, head- and tail-pieces and initials in red, some foxing at beginning and end, occasional spotting, original printed wrappers bound in, contemporary half morocco, gilt, 8vo, Paris, P.-V. Stock, 1906.⁂ A tale set in Lourdes, in which Huysmans looks at the themes of hope and charity through the crowds of the sick that gather there in the hope of a miraculous cure, and the hysteria that this generates.
Melville (Herman) Moby-Dick; or The Whale, first American edition, 6pp. advertisements, light foxing, original orange-coated endpapers, original "A" red cloth with publisher's circular device and a heavy rule frame on both covers, neat and sympathetic repair and retouching to joints, spine ends and corners by Bruce Levy, light creasing to covers, in effect a sharp and excellent copy, preserved in custom morocco drop-back box with wale motif inlayed in white to covers and in gilt on spine, [BAL 13664], 8vo, New York, Harper & Brothers, 1851.⁂ An attractive example of the first American edition, issued one month after the true first, containing thirty-five passages that were expunged in the English edition as well as the Epilogue recounting Ishmael's rescue.

Joshua Reynolds' copy.- Malvasia (Carlo Cesare) Felsina pittrice. Vite de pittori bolognesi, 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition, half-title, 50 full-page woodcut portraits, in elaborate frames (8 of which are left blank despite the name being included beneath), woodcut illustrations, lacking approbation f., contemporary blind-stamped panelled vellum, joints split, lower cover stained, 4to, Bologna, Heir of Barbieri for Giovanni Francesco Davico, 1678.⁂ Sir Joshua Reynolds' copy (with his signature to head of first title) of this important history of modern Bolognese painting. Reynolds (1723-1792) English painter and a founder of the Royal Academy of Arts. He was a fluent Italian speaker and thought highly of Italian painters and art theorists. He quotes from Malvasia in his Discourses.

The binding was executed by the leading workshop of Francesco Soresini, who was appointed Papal binder on the death of Niccolò Franzese in 1575.Provenance: Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, Hugues Loubens de Verdalle (1531-1595; arms); given by him as a gift to Francesco Girolamo Berti (gilt inscription on the lower cover); and then to his brother Fabrizio Berti (ink ownership inscription on the first title 'Di Fra Fabritio Bertio Baglio di Pavia 1595'). Jones (Owen) Examples of Chinese Ornament, first edition, 100 fine chromolithograph plates (including additional title), printed title in red and black, last 2 plates loose, occasional finger-soiling and the odd spot, mostly marginal, original decorated cloth, gilt, corners and spine ends and little bumped, joints reinforced, neatly rebacked, preserving original backstrip, rubbed, folio, 1867.⁂ One of the great works of chromolithographic printing and oriental design. A notoriously fragile book, the condition of this copy is decidedly above average.
Orwell (George) Down and Out in Paris and London, first edition, Roger Senhouse's copy with his neat ink ownership inscription to endpaper, small chip to upper corner of title and first f. of text, original cloth, very light rubbing and minor bumping to tips of spine and corners, but a sharp and excellent copy overall, 8vo, 1933.⁂ An excellent example of Orwell's rare first novel with a lovely association. Senhouse was a correspondent of Orwell's and as co-owner of Secker & Warburg he would prove to be instrumental in Orwell's literary career when he published Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Homer. Iliad [and Odyssey], 2 vol., collations: A-Z8, AA-MM8 and A8 b-z8 A-I8 aa-gg8, titles and woodcut printer's device within attractive woodcut borders depicting scenes from each work, capital spaces with guide-letters, title of Iliad closely trimmed at outer edge, water-stained, uniformly bound in contemporary blind-stamped calf, sympathetically rebacked, preserving original backstrips in compartments, corners repaired, rubbed, 8vo (161 x 91mm. and 161 x 95mm.), Strasbourg, Wolfgang Köpfel, 1525.⁂ An important edition (the first complete edition printed outside Italy), with an interesting provenance. Provenance: Étienne Desprez, president of the Besançon school and correspondent of Erasmus of Rotterdam between 1529 and 1534 (ownership inscription to tile of second volume 'Sum Stephanj a pratis'); De Valimbert family from Besançon (ownership inscription to title of first volume, 'Jo. Fred. de Valimbert'; 'Carolus Valimbertus Rhetore Bisuntinae'. Literature: Adams H-746; VD16 H-4652/4692.
Military.- [Goddard (T.)] The Military Costume of Europe, 2 vol., first edition, 96 hand-coloured engraved plates, occasional faint off-setting and spotting, advertisement at beginning vol. 1, vol. 2 lacking title but with duplicate title to vol. 1 bound in its place, lacking plate list, bookplates, contemporary straight-grain red morocco, gilt, slight rubbing to corners and extremities, gilt, 4to, 1812.
James I, King of England. Basilikon doron [graece]. Or His Maiesties Instructions to his Dearest Sonne, Henry the Prince, woodcut title-device and ornaments, contemporary ink signature of E.Watson at head of title and Latin inscription signed Tho.Walker below the woodcut arms, with several contemporary ink annotations and underlinings to text, lightly browned, A7 lacking small portion from lower margin, modern calf, spine very slightly faded, 8vo, [STC 14354], by E.Allde for E.W[hite] and others of the company of Stationers, 1603.⁂ First published in 1599 in a very small number and reprinted in 1603 by several printers. This edition includes "tennise" among the acceptable pastimes. Henry is known to have spent much time playing and it has been suggested that he died after a hard game in inclement conditions.

Guicciardine, 2 parts in 1, first edition, titles with woodcut printer's device, first title first word is xylographic and with engraved portrait of dedicatee Prince Charles verso, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, lacking blanks, title trimmed and window mounted with portrait verso visible, 2L-2N2 thin worm trace to side-notes column, occasionally just touching part of the odd letter of text, occasional staining to lower margins, contemporary limp vellum, ms. ink title to spine, lacking ties, a little staining, [STC 6197], folio, [R. Field] for Edward Blount, 1613.⁂ In 1609 Dallington presented Prince Henry with a manuscript Aphorismes civill and militarie, comprising pieces selected from the Italian historian Guicciardini. Following the prince's death in 1612 Dallington reworked these, which were published in 1613 with a new dedication to Prince Charles, later King Charles I. Provenance: 'William ?' (two contemporary ink signatures to B1).
Rackham (Arthur).- Irving (Washington) Rip van Winkle, number 227 of 250 copies signed by the artist, plain illustrations and 50 tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Rackham, one double-page, captioned tissue guards, brown paper mounts a little mottled, endpapers spotted, original pictorial vellum, gilt, t.e.g., others uncut, lacking ties, spotted, upper cover a little splayed and with two small ink stains, 4to, 1905.⁂ The first of Rackham's limited Christmas gift books and in a much smaller edition than the later ones.
Whistler (Rex) Engravings...for Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels Printed from the Original Plates, Introduction by Anthony Rota, out-of series copy (not for sale) from an edition limited to 100 copies on hand-made paper, this one of 26 unnumbered copies with one of the original copper plates, engraved title-vignette and 25 engraved sheets comprising 12 plates, 5 maps, 4 head- & 4 tail-pieces by Rex Whistler, the 12 plates hand-coloured, loose as issued, with copper plate in recessed panel inside rear board and printer's original paper wrapping featuring the engraving mounted inside front board (soiled), a little oxidisation to plate and loose from panel, together in original half viridian morocco drop-back box, slightly rubbed at edges, large 4to, Harrison's for H.M.Fletcher, 1970. ⁂ Whistler's illustrated version of Swift's Gulliver's Travels was his magnum opus. It was first published by the Cresset Press in 1930 with 195 copies on hand-made paper and 10 on vellum, and is one of the most magnificent English illustrated books of the 20th century. Whistler's elaborate rococo frames incorporating Baroque architecture were apparently inspired by Richard Bentley's Designs for Six Poems by Mr T.Gray of 1753. The original copper plates were bought by bookseller H.M.Fletcher who issued this suite of the illustrations in 1970.The copper plate is for 'The King commands him to bring one of his chairs out of the Box and sit down upon the top of the cabinet' from the Voyage to Brobdingnag.

Composed for the moral education of the young Prince William of Cleves. This work is a monumental collection of pithy sayings and anecdotes collections from Greek and Latin literature. Putarch's ancient collection of apothegms appears to be a primary source; Socrates, Plato and Alexander the Great are frequently referenced.
Caravia (Alessandro) Naspo Bizaro. nuouamente restampato, con la zonta de lamento chel fà per hauerse pentio de hauer sposao Cate Bionada Biriotta, 2 parts in 1, collation: A-L4, titles with full-page woodcut, repeated as full-page illustrations within text, with final blank, washed, 19th century green crushed morocco, richly gilt, g.e., 4to (203 x 147mm.), [Venice], Piero di Domenico, [c.1570-1575].⁂ Rare expanded second edition of this popular comic serenade composed in ottava rima and in Venetian dialect by the Venetian jeweller Caravia, whose name appears at the end of the dedicatory epistle to Antonio della Vecchia. The work first appeared in Venice in 1565, from the press of Domenico Nicolini da Sabbio, and at Caravia's expense. The relevance of the Naspo bizaro in the history of Italian popular literature, especially in the context of the commedia dell'arte, is widely acknowledged. The edition is also rightly famous for its woodcuts, which follow the iconography of the Venetian characters Pantalone and Zanni. Responsible for their execution was the renowned publisher, engraver, and print dealer Niccolò Nelli (c.1530 - 1579/86), who had a shop at the Rialto Bridge. The title of the 1570 publication bears the same large woodcut that decorates the previous edition and is signed with Nelli's monogram. The plate shows the Venetian Naspo Bizaro as a canterino, singing his hyperbolic serenade to the beautiful Cate Bionda Biriota - so-named after the rough district of Biri - while his servant Zan Polo eats in his gondola. The block is repeated as a full-page illustration on fol. F2v. A second woodcut - likewise a re-use of the one previously employed - is printed, as a full-page, on fol. D2v, and repeated on the divisional title El fin de l'inamoramento de Naspo Bizaro, introducing the Canto Quarto: the scene depicts a different poet-musician, singing and playing under a window, with the city of Venice in the background.
