It is also of interest to the Shakespearian scholar, as it was printed by the same printer later in the same year that he printed the First Folio. Where both books contain the same emblematic head-pieces and tail-pieces. Provenance: Claude Blair FSA, OBE, CVO (1922-2010), the eminent scholar of European arms and armour and historic metalwork, funerary sculpture, English parish churches and the decorative arts. He was Keeper at the Department of Metalwork, Victoria and Albert Museum, from 1972-82. (1)

Gardner, 1747, engraved head and tail-pieces, first and final leaves toned (title a trifle chipped at fore-edge), armorial bookplate on front pastedown, red sprinkled edges, modern tan calf, gilt lettered leather spine label, small faint superficial scratch on lower cover, 4to Scarce text on fencing, which also contains the first significant discussion of the skills required in boxing and a description of some of the renowned boxers of the day. Describing the basic principles of armed and unarmed combat Godfrey tells how the champions of his day fought with swords, sticks and fists. Godfrey himself was an intrepid pupil of James Figg (1684-1734), the first English bare-knuckle boxing champion, generally regarded the father of modern boxing. (1)

MENUHIN YEHUDI: (1916-1999) American-born British and Swiss Violinist and Conductor. T.L.S., Yehudi Menuhin, one page, 4to, Los Gatos, California, 7th June 1954, to Miss Muriel Frost. Menuhin states that he has received his correspondent's letter, remarking 'and I, too, pray that this may not be your last letter from an office which brought us together and contributed so much to my feeling of friendship and peace of mind in England', further adding that his wife is writing to her independently, although inviting Frost to stay with them in Gstaad in September, explaining 'your presence would be of inestimable value in handling my correspondence and freeing me to care for the rather important work I have at that time'. Menuhin concludes 'Many thanks for attending to all the different chores I have you. I do hope that the next weeks will provide you with relaxation and clear the mind from the myriad of petty problems you have had to face these last months.' Together with an A.N.S., Yehudi Menuhin, on an oblong 12mo card (most likely originally accompanying a gift or flowers), n.p., December 1954, to Miss Frost, 'celebrating a long and happy companionship'. Also including an A.L.S., Yehudi Menuhin, three pages, 8vo, London, 29th May 1955, to Miss Muriel Frost, on the printed stationery of Claridge's. Menuhin announces 'I will long recall the particular quality which your blend of devotion and ability conveyed to a relationship which has spanned the greater part of my life - a constant, unfailing element of support and comfort' and continues 'Amid a shifting background and standing often as a lonely pillar in a sea of debris, you guarded intact the life-lines and the essential parts of the matter' and concluding by remarking 'I only hope that you will bring your friendly and lively face often to see me'. Accompanied by the original envelope. Further including a vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph of Menuhin in a head and shoulders pose playing his violin. Photograph by Fayer of Vienna. Signed by Menuhin in dark fountain pen ink to the lower white border and dated December 1955 in his hand and a signed and inscribed hardback edition of Yehudi Menuhin - The Story of the Man and the Musician by Robert Magidoff, First Edition published by Doubleday & Company Inc., New York, 1955. Signed by Menuhin in bold blue ink to the half title page, 'To dear Miss Frost, recalling our happy hours in London together Dec-Jan 1956, Yehudi Menuhin'. Accompanied by the dust jacket (some extensive wear, creasing and areas of paper loss). The lot also includes Diana Menuhin (1912-2003) British Ballerina, second wife of Yehudi Menuhin. A.L.S., Diana Menuhin, two pages, 4to, Los Gatos, California, 10th September n.y. (late 1950s?), to Miss. Frost. Most likely writing following the death of her third child shortly after birth, Menuhin thanks her correspondent for their 'sweet & sympathetic letter' and continues 'It was a stupidly cruel shock and I am fighting hard to overcome the anguished feeling of emptiness & waste. I have, though, so much in life that I would be a very ungrateful & egoistic (sic) creature if I could not conquer my sadness, and I have such a loving family and friends that I know myself to be very fortunate', concluding by hoping that they will be able to meet for lunch or dinner in London in the future, and further features a series of sixteen vintage Christmas greetings cards from the Menuhin family, the majority inscribed by Diana Menuhin and signed by her on behalf of her husband and family, the stiff oblong small 8vo folding cards dated 1943, 1954 (2), 1956-59, 1961-67, 1969-70, each of the cards featuring different images (some colour, a few now detached although present), most depicting the Menuhin's children although some also including Yehudi and Diana. Rousseau, Tome Troisieme, ('Du Contract Social ou Principes du Droit Politique par J. J. Rousseau, Citoyen de Geneve'), published by Marc Michel Rey, Amsterdam, 1762, this being Gray's copy and signed ('T. Gray') by him in ink with his name alone to the engraved red and black printed title page. Additionally and contemporarily annotated and signed by two other individuals to the half title page, the first notation signed by John Dixon stating 'This book belonged to Mr. Gray' and the second, signed by Juliana Horatia Ewing ('daughter of the Rev. A. Gattey D.D. Vicar of Ecclesfield'), stating 'This book which belonged to the Poet Gray was given to me by Miss. Sarah Thompson, granddaughter of the above Rev. BYRON LORD: (1788-1824) British Poet, a leading figure in the Romantic Movement. Book signed, a hardback edition of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage - Canto III (1816) bound with Canto IV (1818), First Edition printed by Thomas Davison for John Murray, London, 1816/1818, being the first variant of the second issue with capital L of Lettre directly beneath lui of celui-la on title page and page 67 with the word Eagle (as opposed to Falcon in the second variant). Half title page present and bound with the notes and the poem A Very Mournful Ballad on the Siege and Conquest of Alhama. Signed ('Noel Byron') by Lord Byron in ink with his name alone to the head of the title page. Bound in calf with gilt stamped decoration to the edges, four raised bands to the spine. Some light staining to some pages, very slightly affecting the last two letters of Byron's signature, and with light overall age wear, G Provenance: Accompanied by a loosely inserted letter signed by Dr. Peter Beal of Sotheby's, 13th December 1991, and relating to Lot 28 in the Sotheby's auction of 12th December 1991, and stating 'We are happy to confirm our definite opinion that two of the volumes in this lot were signed by Lord Byron, using the form of his name (“Noel Byron”) he adopted after the death of his mother-in-law in January 1822. Byron's signature was subject to variation, depending in part upon the speed with which he wrote, but close comparison with a number of facsimile examples leaves no doubt in our mind that his salient characteristics are present and that there is no indication of forgery'.

POTTER BEATRIX: (1866-1943) English Author of Children's Books. A very fine original signed watercolour illustration by Potter on an 8vo sheet of paper, n.p., August 1927. The charming and delicately executed artwork (which appears in its published form on page 38 of the First Edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, 1902) depicts the young, disobedient Peter Rabbit, wearing his blue jacket and with his back to the reader, standing opposite Mr. McGregor who kneels in his garden as he tends his vegetables, an astonished look on his bespectacled and bearded face as he stares directly towards Peter. With a holograph caption by Potter immediately beneath the illustration, 'Round the end of a cucumber frame whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!' Signed ('Beatrix Potter'; the signature a little faded, largely to the surname, although still legible) and dated in her hand beneath the caption. Rare and particularly desirable in this form. Attractively and professionally matted in pale brown and cream and framed and glazed in a decorative wooden frame to an overall size of 11.5 x 14. About EX Potter made a series of watercolours to raise money for a fund to save some woodland and meadow near Windermere in the Lake District, many of which were sold in America. Within a year enough money had been generated to save the land from being built upon and Potter herself wrote 'It was a great satisfaction to me to have been able to help the fund through the kindness of my friends in America…Whenever I cross the ferry and look at the pleasant green banks I will think of the good friends across a wider stretch of water'. The present lot is certainly one of the series of fund raising watercolours made by Potter, several of which are held in the V&A Collection.

Volume I (of two) only. The Latin text edition has been rebacked with the original labels and calf spine with gilt lettering. Bearing the ownership signatures of Hamilton ('Emma Hamilton') on the front paste down endpaper and Nelson ('Horatia Nelson', in two slightly different coloured inks, the surname possibly added by her at a later date) to the head of the black and red printed title page. An extremely rare combination of signatures by the two women whom Nelson undoubtedly felt the most affection for during his life. Some light overall age wear and a few faults and stains to the front paste down endpaper, although not affecting Hamilton's signature. About VG Volume II of the present book, also bearing the ownership signatures of Hamilton and Nelson, was previously contained in The Nelson Collection of F. Roy Deeley and was sold in these rooms (Lot 989, July 2012, hammer price £2100).
