Agricola was a German humanist scholar, mineralogist and metallurgist, and he is most well-known for this pioneering and comprehensive work on mining, mining sciences and metallurgy. Until the publication of this work, Pliny the Elder's work Historia Naturalis was the main source of information on metals and mining techniques. Some of the most important sections are those on mechanical engineering, use of water power, pumps, ventilation, blowing of furnaces, transport of ores, and more. With this work Agricola also made an important contribution physical geology, as he recognized the influence of the natural environment in the shaping of landscapes and, by extension, mines. Unrivaled in its complexity and accuracy, this work served as the standard reference work for two centuries. The Latin edition of the work was published one year earlier, but it is this first German edition that is rarer. *Proceeds go the Red Cross.

The copy is also interesting, because of the extensive old annotations on first blank and on 31 pages bound with at the end, titled "Sequentia quinq. capita Irenaei primur et util Fr. Fevardentig (...)." Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons (ca. 140-202), was the first great Catholic theologian. The present work is his most important one, directed against the heresy of Valentinian Gnosticism. *Proceeds go the Red Cross.

Pater Joannes Baptista Doemen, Carthuyser, door desselfs discipel nu geswoen Landt-Meter Martinus van Dycke (...). Brugges, P. van de Capelle, 1714. 2 parts in one vol., (10),160; 41,(1) p. (some errors). Fold. table, 36 engr. fold. plates and 1 plate w. moveable parts. Later gilt half leather. Sm. 8vo. The very rare original edition of this mathematical treatise, with all but plate Z1 conforming to the binder's index. We could not verify (no copies with plates digitized online), but we suspect that plate Z1 was executed in pen in all copies, due to the layering of the plate and a description on page 60. A nice element of this edition are the puns: the name of the author on the title page (in a special diamond shape) and on the praise poem, where every letter of Van Dycke's full name is used as the first letter of a stanza (see images). Very rare treatise on surveying art.

nebst Bemerkung 1ten Der Numeren ihrer Wohnhäuser der Ordnung nach. 2tens. Deren Namen nach Alphabetischer Ordnung. 3tens/ Eines Gewerb- und Handlungs-Register gemäs erhaltener Angabe. 4tens. Register deren Strassen. 5tens. Einem Genauen ganz neu von Herrn Cardon in Brüssel verfertigtem Grundris dieser Stadt. Cologne, printed by Thiriart Und Compagnie für Metternichischen Buch-Handlung, 1797, (8),414 p., w. fold. engr. plan, rebacked w. use of the orig. ribbed and gilt halfleather and free endpapers, modern boards and pastedowns. Some minor defects/ imperfections, but a good copy. Very rare and early address book of Cologne, listing 7404 citizens in order of the streets, with their professions. The work indexes the population of the city in 3 different ways, on address, name and profession. Probably the second or third edition (the first one appeared in 1795 and did not mention the professions of the citizens). Worldcat mentions a single copy in the The Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, by Thiriart und Compagnie, supposedly printed in 1747 but this date is almost certainly erroneous. Also listed on Worldcat are copies of an edition in magazine-form (1794-1798). Otherwise just a few copies (or one copy listed by var. sellers, without the plan) traced. Our edition contains the first mention of the later Eau de Cologne-maker (Kölnisch Wasser) Wilhelm Mülhens, under number 4711 in the Klöckergasse (Glockengasse). It also mentions other producers of Eau de Cologne (incl. Joh. Anton Farina), sculptors of the Imhoff family, printers and booksellers, printmakers, coffee producers- and houses, tobacco-dealers, wine-dealers, makers of musical instriments, jewellers, watchmakers, weapon-makers, etc. etc.

The third part only, but apparently with all the plates for the three parts together; occas. waterst., more or less browned throughout. Vellum of covers nibbled by rodents in lower margin, spine lacks letterpiece. Still a good copy. The first edition appeared in 1687, the third in 1719, both w. typographically sl. different divisional title of the third part compared to our volume. All editions are very rare.

Good copy. Rare and interesting collection of military placards and ordinances from 1590 to 1688, the older ones mostly in renewed editions (the oldest dated 1599, the newest dated 1688). A number of editions under this exact name are known, all updated/ expanded compared to earlier editions, the first edition appeared in 1675 (72 parts).

The map rolled, and w. a few sm. tears and pinholes in blank margins, otherwise fine. Very rare separate edition of the map also published in the booklet Plan statistique des vignobles produisant les grands vins de Bourgogne (...), first published in Beaune in 1861. Not coincidentally, the booklet was published just before the great London world exhibition of 1862. The map is divided in areas w. different colours indicating the vineyards of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd classes. The mentioned areas are Santenay, Chassagne, Puligny, Meursault, Auxey, Monthélie, Volnay, Pommard, Beaune, Savigny, Pernand, Aloxe, Serrigny, Prissey, Premeaux, Nuits, Vosne, Flagey-les-Gilly and Vougeot. The very nice (and extremely rare) original wooden box was used to send this copy to wine dealer Charles Durieux in Marche, Belgium, in 1895. The winery Charles Bernard that sent the map, still exists.

Except for the cover with printed title and publishing information, the mylar sheets are all blank. This is the second edition of 100 copies. The artists' book was conceived by Manzoni just before his death in February 1963, the first edition was published posthumously by Jes Petersen later that year. Petersen appears to be the author of this publication, as his name is listed above the title. This was a Manzoni joke though Petersen did suggest the use of translucent paper. Ref Manzoni, Piero Editore Milan 1989 p.265. Exquisite rare work in very good condition.
