ENGLISH SCHOOL, C1840 A POLITICAL DEBATE 50 x 65cm From the several pictorial clues in the composition it is evident that the group of men are chartists, supporters of the movement for political and social reform launched in 1838. One of them reads a copy of The Northern Star, the radical newspaper, which is also advertised on the back of a settle. On the walls are notices about a procession to be led by Fergus O`Conner (1796-1855) The Northern Star`s publisher, to a meeting for the extension of the franchaise, the first of the chartist`s six aims. The movement was particularly effective in the great industrial centres of the North, the likely origin of the unknown painter of the present picture. On the stretchers are pasted strips from an edition of The Nottingham Mercury [date excised, c1840]. ++General craquelure and darkening with localised degredation of the medium, but unlined and entirely unrestored in contemporary giltwood and gesso frame
