A. Haku Maki (Japanese, 1924-2000), Modern Japanese Limited Edition Woodblock Print. A traditional ceremonial tea vessel, signed and numbered by the artist. Number 24/111, collection 66, 9 x 8in. (22.8 x 20.3cm.), framed & matted * Haku Maki was a sosaku hanga artist in 20th Century Japan. The artist was born with the name Maejima Tadaaki in 1924 in the small town Asomachi in the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan. He graduated at Ibaraki Teachers' College and became vice-principal of an elementary school there. In 1945 he was in a special squadron of kamikaze pilots and his life was to be ended. However, with the surrender of Japan on August 14, 1945 his life was spared, and he became a teacher at a high school. He studied printmaking at the Modern Print Research Society with Koshiro Onchi andi, in 1950 he changed his name to Haku Maki. His work has a few characteristic design elements for which he became famous - deep embossing and the use of distorted Chinese characters. Maki developed his own process of relief printmaking, applying mixed media printing techniques. The artist first carved a conventional woodblock. Then he put cement around the carved areas. When the cement had dried out, Haku Maki carved and chiselled the cement into the shape he wanted to have. Then a wet, double-layered paper was used for the printing. Thus prints made in this technique show strong embossing. Haku Maki's works look nearly three-dimensional.

Man escaping from a maze - see Ayrton's wonderful book 'Maze Maker' for his re-interpretation of the myth of Daedalus, Icarus and the Minotaur - on which much of his work is based. [good condition]. 'Opening price' is NOT the reserve.
RARE ANTIQUE BOOK 'His Pilgrimage, 1614' by Samuel Purchas (1577-1626), second edition of the first book of compiled travel accounts of approximately one thousand contributors, with notables including Hawkins, Columbus, Sir Francis Drake etc, 'Relations of the World & The Religions Observed in All Ages and Places Discovered From the Creation Unto this Present' divided as nine books over 918 pages, plus the table of the principle things contained (which is absent after SE) contents of the chapters and catalogue of authors, title page missing, book opens at 'To The Most Reverend Father in God, George and by the Divine Providence, Lord Archbishop of Canterbyrie etc', this is a dedication to George Abbot, Purchas having been appointed his Chaplain in 1614, possibly in original cover and binding (poor condition) with some small tears/losses in the early pages, staining appears pretty much throughout with heavy stains to the bottom right corner from page 277 right through to the end
