REID THOMAS: (1710-1796) Scottish Philosopher, a contemporary of David Hume. Founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense. A.L.S., Tho. Reid, one page, small 4to, Glasgow College, 28th June 1796, to [John Bell, his publisher]. Reid acknowledges receipt of `the two books sent by Gabriel Watson, & these handsomely bound which was more than I asked.` and continues `You may please to present Mr. Dugald Stewart with a copy of the new edition from me, & Dr. Gregory with another. I shall want a third for myself.` In concluding Reid writes `I wrote you when I sent the first Vol. corrected, that I had the second corrected by me which I should send when it was wanted. I send it now by Gabriel Watson.` With partial blank integral leaf. Rare. VG Published in the Correspondence of Thomas Reid (Edinburgh Edition, Vol. 4, letter no. 125, p.236, edited by Paul Wood). It is believed to be the only letter in the collection which remains in private hands, making its appearance at auction a rare opportunity for a collector to acquire an autograph by Reid.

Half brown leather with gilt title to spine, six raised bands and green marbled boards. Volume One, with the circular blindstamp of the Alexandre Gourdon collection to the half title page. Some light foxing to the inside pages and minor age wear, about VG A fine presentation copy, inscribed to one of the authors closest female friends, Comtesse Appony, the wife of the Austrian Ambassador and the hostess of a famous salon at which Balzac was a frequent guest.

Book signed and inscribed, a hardback edition of We-The Famous Flier`s own story of his life and his transatlantic flight, together with his views on the future of aviation, published by G. B. Putnam`s Sons, New York, July 1927 (second impression), blue cloth with gilt lettering and image of the Spirit of St. Louis to the front cover. Signed by Lindbergh to the title page, `To Gerta Friedler, with best wishes, Charles A. Lindbergh`. The signature is a little scratchy in places although completely legible. Lacking the dustjacket. Spine loose and with some age wear, about G Inscribed to Gerta Friedler who, with her husband Heinz, were employed by Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American Airways and a close business associate and friend of Lindbergh. The lot includes a small selection of greetings cards and letters etc. sent to the Friedler`s by various relatives and friends, not associated with Lindbergh.

Brand (Christianna). Death in High Heels, 1st ed., John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1941, half-title with tip of top outer corner creased, early ms. ownership name on front free endpaper, orig. orange cloth, lettered in silver on spine, in sl. rubbed d.j., chipped and creased at edges, 8vo. Notoriously rare first edition of crime writer Christiana Brand’s first book, which wasn’t published in the US until 1954. Brand is also the author of the children’s series Nurse Matilda, which Emma Thompson adapted to film as Nanny McPhee (2005). (1)

Only When I Larf, privately printed, 1967, title inscribed by the author “To Eric and Romilly, with love and best wishes Len Deighton”, orig. printed comb-bound limp boards featuring an English note on the front and rear covers, upper board inscribed by the cover designer Ray Hawkey “To Brian with best wishes Ray (Hawkey)... with now no fear of Bank of England interference”, lower cover slightly marked, folio. Eric Hiscock was for many years the Book Correspondent of the Evening Standard Newspaper. Limited edition 40/150 privately printed by the author to establish copyright while negotiating the motion picture deal with Paramount Pictures. The Traveller’s Tree, A Journey through the Caribbean Islands, by Patrick Leigh Fermor, 1st ed., 1950,. author’s first book, b & w illusts., double-page map, b & w illusts. from photos at rear, a few neat ink corrections of French quotes (in author’s hand?), ownership signature of Ian Fleming, 16 Victoria Square, SW1, to front free endpaper, marginal pencil lines presumed to be in Ian Fleming’s hand with reference to sections on Haiti and voodoo (pp. 263 ff), orig. cloth, dampstained and worn with spine near-detached, 8vo. Patrick Leigh Fermor or Paddy as he was known to his friends including Ian Fleming and his wife, established his reputation as Britain’s greatest living travel writer with this account of his travels through the Caribbean in the 1940s. James Bond refers to this book in ‘Live and Let Die’ (1954) to get up to date with Haitian voodoo before setting off to New York. See pp. 29-33 of the first edition which acknowledges the origin of the work in the footnote to page 29: ‘This, one of the great travel books, is published by John Murray at 25s’. Provenance: From the family of Frank Beckett, gardener for Ian Fleming at his house in Sevenhampton, near Swindon, Wiltshire in the mid 1970s. Very good for rebinding. (1)
