Nobbes, commonly called "the father of trollers", was not the first to write on the practice, but was "the earliest ... that discoursed at large, and in substantial shape, on it". This is the first issue with hook on p.37 pointing outwards and a broken 'E' on the title; this was not the case in the facsimile of 1790.

A second edition was published in 1855. A very entertaining book containing good advice about Irish fly dressings.

Brunet states that this edition is "Rare et recherche", although the text is thought to be less accurate than that of 1515. Contains Oppianus' poem on fishes in five books, his poem on hunting in three books, and Lippius' Latin translation of the former. Includes the first edition of the poem "de venatione".

The original contained 3500 lines, divided into 5 books, of which the first two concern the natural history of fishes and the others the art of fishing.

Only 250 copies of the first edition were published, 200 intended for sale; this figure was apparently taken from a statement made by the author in "The Field". Coleby notes that only some of the copies were numbered in indelible pencil; there is no apparent difference between numbered and unnumbered copies.

Newland, a library of fishing books and Izaak Walton. In the second, Ransome calls Askakov " ... the first and most delightful of Russian writers on fishing". This work was first published in 1929 and is an angling classic.
