Bertram Thomas: 'The Arabs. Ella Christie (1861-1949) was a pioneering Scottish traveller and explorer who had an indominatoble adventurous streak and travelled extensivley throughout the world including Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East and the Russian Empire including present day Central Asia. She was the first British woman to visit the Khanate of Khiva which had covered present-day western Uzbekistan, south-western Kazakhstan and much of Turkmenistan before the Russians arrived at the second half of the 19th century. She was amongst the first selection of women to be elected as fellows of The Royal Geographical Society in 1913, was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of Scotland, and in November 1934 she became a Vice-President of the society.

In 1847 his friends in England published a folio volume entitled Recollections of India... particularly interesting for its portraits of Sikh chieftains and views of scenery in Kashmir, then an almost unknown country, which he visited in company with John Nicholson" (ODNB).

* JACK KNOX RSA RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1936 - 2015), NUCKELAVEE limited edition lithograph, signed and numbered 43/50, from the Scottish Bestiary Portfolio image size 53cm x 36cm, sheet size 76cm x 56cm, overall size 85cm x 65cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Whilst in his final year at University Charles Booth-Clibborn published The Scottish Bestiary under his imprint The Paragon Press. Booth-Clibborn had invited the Orkney born writer George Mackay Brown to produce texts, in the form of poetry and prose, to accompany 20 prints by Scottish artists depicting 19 animals – real and mythological. By chance Knox had done a series of drawings relating to the poems of Mackay Brown several years before being invited to contribute to the Bestiary. He made a few small sketches before working directly on the lithographic stone. The black lithographic line was printed first and a translucent white square screenprinted over the top. The Nuckelavee is a supernatural creature: a creature of abject terror, spoken of with baited breath. Mackay Brown’s poem refers to an Orcadian tale about an encounter with a Nuckelavee.
