Marvell, [c.1888].⁂ A rare early work by Machen of significant esoteric interest. The work divides into two parts, the first forms a metaphoric narrative discussion of alchemy while the second is a discussion of alchemical, esoteric other occult works that were available at the time. We can trace no like copy at auction or available online.

Originally published anonymously due to the shocking nature of its content for the times, published the following year in expurgated form. The book's depictions of the brutality, futility and mundanity of war were said to have inspired Hemingway to read the novel yearly, "to remember how things really were so that I will never lie to myself nor anyone else about them".
