'Festung Guernsey (Fortress Guernsey)' FIRST EDITION, 2007, bound as four volumes in two half calf leather. This comprehensive work was produced as a Limited Edition of 135 copies, this one is numbered 106 consequently a Very Rare work. This work was compiled at the suggestion of the commanding officer of the 319th Infantry Division and Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Islands Lieutant-General Graf von Schmettow under the guidance of Chief Officer of the General Staff Lieutant Colonel Hubner, who with his team, drawn from the Divisionskartenstelle (Division Cartographic Section) of the 319th Division, with some 14 non-commissioned officers working across drawing, cartography, photography, printing, calligraphy development and craftwork. This team recorded the defences which were set in a relatively undeveloped countryside, dominated by small dairy farms and tomato vineries, with almost no civilian traffic. This work was drawn from a remarkable collection of plans and photographs, with full details of German armaments and fortifications. So that by 1944, Guernsey was probably the most fortified place in the world. It was realised that the Festung volumes were very fragile and would suffer damage if made available for general inspection. Since 1947 these volumes have remained in the custody of the Royal Court. A local resident came forward with the first chapter of section 2 ‘’WAFFEN’’ (Weapon). This is the only complete copy traceable, without his generosity this work would be considerably diminished. The result is a stunning and comprehensive picture of Guernsey in 1944.
