Mixed technique on bronze, signed Nano '02, edition 2/34. Measurements: 42 x 72 x 12 cm. Colombian sculptor Nano L—pez (Bogot‡, 1955) exhibited for the first time in Colombia 20 years ago, at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogot‡, when art critic Marta Traba highlighted his creative talent. Now, for 20 years, L—pez has lived in Walla Walla, Washington, where he is still dedicated to sculpture, only now he carves granite, sculpts marble and melts and bends steel, to create all kinds of figures on a monumental scale. In addition to his works made in bronze with all kinds of techniques and patinas, L—pez has specialized in making monumental sculptures for other artists, in a workshop especially dedicated to it. From scale models and small-scale models, L—pez expands them and makes them in cast bronze. L—pez recently exhibited a series of paintings and sculptures in the United States, where the artist depicts the essence of the human condition with intense charges of strong emotions. Perhaps the combination of his classical training and his experimental character is what results in a work of very rich and textured surfaces with different elements taken from nature. Having his central studio in Walla Walla, Washington. Origin: Spanish private collection. Having its headquarters in Walla Walla, Washington. Origin: Spanish private collection. Altmayer Family Collection, lot 65.The offered urns and pedestals appear in M. Harris and Sons, A Catalogue and Index of Old Furniture and Works of Art, London, n.d. (circa 1930), No. F20869, p. 407. Two related pairs of urns and pedestals are illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, 2008, Woodbridge, pl.'s 342-347, pp.'s 309-310. LANG FRITZ: (1890-1976) Austro-Hungarian born film director whose works include the ground-breaking futuristic Metropolis (1927) and the influential film noir precursor M (1931). A good series of seven T.Ls.S., Fritz Lang, thirteen pages (total), 4to, most Beverly Hills, California, April 1963 - November 1964, all to the writer Alfred Eibel, in German. Lang writes to his correspondent concerning their project to write a book about Lang, extracts from the letters include -(i) 'Unfortunately I'm not really in a position to delve further into your project at the moment. I'm head over heels working on my next film, going to Rome and Capri in two days and then having to go back to Munich and then Berlin and London…..I won't be able to deal with your project for four to five months, with the best will in the world. I'm very sorry, but unfortunately I can't give you any further information at the moment. I just want to tell you that…..about 8 to 10 days ago, a book on the same basis as you intend to do yours has been published by Seghers in Paris. It's called "Fritz Lang" and was written by Luc Moullet' (25th April 1963)(ii) 'I read that the book about me has already been published….business and health reasons have prevented me from writing to you…..I've been taking the trouble to look up old files for the last few days and will try to send you some photocopies of American articles I've written…..I'm also very anxious that you will include in this book an essay by my long time collaborator and editor of my films, Gene Fowler….' (22nd January 1964)(iii) 'I have reviewed the material you have sent to Hollywood for use in the book and I shall comment on that first…..I have the following very important things to say; the "Writings by Fritz Lang" you have given are from Germany, as far as I can remember, mostly from the press offices of the respective companies for which I make the films….have been written by Thea von Harbou and are not mine…..I would not like these articles to be published in your book under my name. If you would send me the German articles from the period 1919 to 1933 in German, I would read them as soon as possible and write back to you immediately which articles are, to the best of my knowledge and belief, mine. I will send you a number of original articles of mine…..Preface by Fritz Lang to "Famous Films" by H. A. V. Bullied, delivered as speech at the occasion of showing of "M". The Frog and I by Fritz Lang (referring to an insert shot for "You Only Live Once")…..Why Am I Interested in Murder? By Fritz Lang…..The Freedom of the Screen by Fritz Lang (published in Theatre Arts December 1947)…..Happily Ever After by Fritz Lang (published in Penguin Film Review…..1948), I Do Not Believe in Censorship by Fritz Lang….. These articles are very important to me, and since you yourself write that you are very poor in terms of material from me and about me from 1936 to 1956, this is certainly a full substitute for any German articles that are missing. I am also sending you a number of the interviews and articles about me you have requested…..regarding your request regarding the manuscript Unter ausschluss der oeffentlichkeit (Translation: With the Exclusion of the Public) I would be happy to authorise you to publish it…..Chapters 2 and 6 you are planning are not entirely clear to me. In chapter 2 you write "Filmography from 1919-1962" and in Chapter 6 write "New Filmography". About what do you want to write in this chapter? My coming to Europe has been postponed from February to March 1964. I will let you know in good time when and where I can be reached in Europe and I hope that we will still have time to sit down and talk in detail about the individual articles so that there are no errors in your book, which could give rise to unwanted criticism' (1st February 1964)(iv) 'I hope you enjoyed my stay and long conversations….I know it was very tiring and certainly not always easy….but believe me I was very happy…..and everything I said was in sincere favour to you…..My house is always open to you…..I remember that you promised me four examples of your book…..Unfortunately these books have still not arrived…..I was in Washington until November 9th, but the mentioned booklets had not arrived there by then. Neither are they here in Beverly Hills….and I am now in a terrible dilemma…..But maybe you made a mistake and you still have the booklets in your possession. If so, please forward them to me immediately in Beverly Hills. And be so kind as to send me the four copies of your book you promised me by air mail at the same time. Of course, I will pay you for the postage costs' (10th November 1964)(v) 'Unfortunately I only got around to replying to your long letter of 26th December today. I'm sure you've had some wrong thoughts, God knows what, but the delay has nothing to do with you personally, dear Eibel, but with an accident I had in Washington…..I slipped on one of the many steps leading up to public buildings in Washington….and sprained my hand…..I've been back in Beverly Hills for about 8 days now and can finally write to you. Of course, I was extremely interested in what you wrote to me about Joris Ivens Mistral-Film. I'm surprised you don't think he can handle the "big machine"….I consider him one of the best documentary film directors. But Mistral is certainly a topic that naturally brings with it a lot of distractions…..Thanks for translating Career Girl. I know how difficult it is to translate from one language to another without losing the flair….Of course we have to see each other…..I would like to talk to you about the new edition of your book. You write quite correctly that the American contributions are pretty superficial with few exceptions. That goes without saying, because each and every one of my employees will of course only write in general terms. On the one hand because they don't want to get in trouble with me for later films, on the other hand because they are all in the same situation in front of me, since they usually perform and do what the director decides…..Mr Gerard Legrand…..wrote me a letter in which he writes that it says in your book that I said that in the film "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" many cuts were made without my consent. At the moment I don't know if that's true, but I want to write to him about it one of these days' (4th March 1965)(vi) 'My distrust of the German doctors has once again come true because although the doctor told me I could go to London, the pain got worse again and I decided without further ado to postpone my London affairs to September and to fly back to America to see my doctors. I survived the 14-hour flight relatively well with the help of painkillers….Here I went to my doctors, who only shrugged off the negligence and inadequacy of German x-rays….What I am going to write now, dear Eibel, is only for you and I ask that you do not speak to anyone about this......A good series of letters with interesting content. Generally VG, 7Alfred Eibel (1932- ) published his work Fritz Lang in Paris in 1964 and also contributed to the documentary Fritz Lang - Circle of Destiny in 1998.OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOR THIS LOT CANNOT BE SHOWN - PLEASE CONTACT US DIRECTLY FOR THE FULL DESCRIPTION

MÉLIÈS GEORGES: (1861-1938) French Film Director, a pioneer of cinema and innovator in the use of special effects. Rare and lengthy interesting A.L.S., G. Melies, four pages, small writing, 4to, Orly, 4th January 1934, to Auguste-Jules Drioux, in French. A lengthy letter written by Melies during an illness convalescence at home, referring first to his health `Il y a 2 jours, environ, où cela semble aller un peu mieux, quoique je sois encore au lit et d´une très grande faiblesse, mais enfin j´ai pu manger un peu, et digérer, car depuis 6 semaines, rien ne passait! Il faut espérer qu´à force de purges , de lavements, de cataplasmes, de ventoses, sans compter tout le tremblement de cachets, potions, ampoules, etc…´ ("Since 2 days ago, approximately, things seem to be going a little better, although I am still in bed and very weak, but finally I was able to eat a little, and digest, because for 6 weeks, nothing passed through! It is to be hoped that by dint of purges, enemas, poultices, suction cups, not to mention all the trembling of tablets, potions, ampoules, etc..") Melies further refers to his opinions and relationship with the Mutuelle du Cinema, an association which gets funds from the cinema itself, working for the cinema and its workers, and which should help its members when they get old if they need assistance or medical attention, and mentions also his personal difficult financial situation, and states in part `Vous me demandez de vous dire franchement et sans gêne si la société de la "Mutuelle" ou d´autres sont venus à notre aide dans ces circonstances. You ask me to tell you frankly and without embarrassment if the "Mutuelle" society or others have come to our aid in these circumstances. Whatever it will cost me, I am obliged to answer: alas, no! To the point that we have completely exhausted our very small savings, and for nearly 3 weeks now, I had to drop the doctor, having no money left to pay for his visits and the huge pharmacy bills that invariably followed the said visits"), further adding `Quant à l´oeuvre de la "Mutuelle", qui est actuellement dans la plus grande "panade", les presidents ont été prévenus de ma maladie par le directeur d´ici, mais, malgré qu´on ait pour Georges Mélies la plus grande consideration (en paroles et en écrits du moins) personne n´a daigné se déranger, on ne m´a même pas offert de m´envoyer un médecin, et encore bien moins de m´aider pécuniairement´ ("As for the work of the "Mutuelle", which is currently in the greatest "mess", the presidents were informed of my illness by the local director, but, despite the fact that we have for Georges Mélies the greatest consideration (in words and in writing at least) no one deigned to bother, I was not even offered to send me a doctor, and even less to help me financially") Melies further explains that the Mutuelle cannot afford paying cleaners and cookers and that they have to take care of this too, and his wife who is doing all the work, is exhausted, very old and with no strength to even walk `Plus personne pour la cuisine et le ménage. Allez les vieux, collez-vous y de nouveau!... quand on est malade, et qu´on vous laisse froidement sans le sou, et sans soins, alors cela n´est plus rigolo du tout!..´ ("No one for cooking and cleaning. Come on old folks, stick to it again!... when you're sick, and you're coldly left penniless, and careless, then it's no longer fun at all!.."), and before concluding, sends his furious critics on the boarding directors and announces future protests he intends to lead, saying `il est bien difficile de se faire entendre des gros bonnets des comités actuels, qui ne connaissent, même pas de nom, les pionniers de la cinématographie. D´épais marchands de vin, devenus tenanciers de Cinéma…´ ("it is very difficult to be heard by the leaders of the current committees, who do not even know the name of the pioneers of cinematography. Fat wine merchants, who have become cinema tenants..") A letter of very interesting content, explaining the difficult last years of Melies and his critics about the Cinéma Mutuelle and the future of the pioneers of the "Cinematographie". Very small overall minor age wear with a very small area of paper loss and singeing to the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signature. G Auguste-Jules Drioux was editor of the magazine Passez Muscade, publishing a special edition in 1929 entitled Georges Melies. ‘…in the sonambulism scene you will have the cadenza done in the following way…’ VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. An exceptionally important autograph letter with two autograph musical quotations only two days before the premiere of his opera Macbeth (1847). A.L.S. with A.M.Qs., `G. Verdi´, one page, 8vo, Florence, 12th March 1847, to Giovanni Ricordi, Milan, in Italian. An extremely interesting content letter, where Verdi sends two important corrections to his editor Ricordi, regarding his opera Macbeth (1847). Verdi, referring to the fifth scene of the first act of the opera states `Ti prego di fare il seguente cambiamento nella quarta Battuta dell´ adagio della cavatina di Lady nella sola parte cantabile´ ("Please make the following change in the fourth bar of Lady´s cavatina adagio in the cantabile part only") Verdi carefully pens beneath his request a two bars musical quotation, adding beneath the singing text `ti vo´ quell fred-do´. Further again Verdi explains which one is the second correction, to the fourth scene of the third act, saying `Anche nella scena de sonambulismo farai fare la cadenza nel modo seguente´ ("Also in the somnambulism scene you will have the cadenza done in the following way") and again adds beneath a very clean musical quotation with the singing text beneath `Andiam andiam…andiam andiam Macbetto andia…´ Alongside Verdi´s musical quotations Ricordi annotated the sheets pages where the corrections had to be inserted and the name of the engraver "Briorli". The two corrections were included to the pages 41 and 240 in the Ricordi´s first edition piano-singing. Addressed to the verso in Puccini´s hand, and postmarked in Florence.
