First edition of Scottish botanist Morison's system for classifying the Umbelliferae (or Apiaceae) family of plants, "successfully isolating Umbelliferous plants from others with similar forms of inflorescence. Following Cesalpino, whose work he had read, Morison argued that plants should primarily be distinguished by the single, key principal of differences in fruit and seed characteristics. He deployed vegetative characteristics for subsidiary taxonomic purposes only and argued that this method reflected the simplicity of the divine ordering of creation, as manifested in the book of nature. Properly observed, plants would reveal the secrets of their taxonomy and their beneficial uses, which had been known to providentially inspired botanists such as King Solomon." (ODNB). The work was later incorporated into Morison's Plantarum Historia pars Tertia, posthumously published in 1699.

*Agatha Walker (1888-1980)Jean Forbes-Robertson in the role of Peter Panc.1930, a painted wax statuette, inscribed to the plinth35cm high43cm high overall, cased This wax figurine is modelled on the actress Jean Forbes-Robertson (1905-1962) in the title role of J M Barrie's 1904 children's play 'Peter Pan'. Jean Forbes-Robertson first played the part at the Gaiety Theatre, Christmas 1927, and subsequently became one of the best known actresses associated with the role, playing it at the Garrick Theatre, 1928/1929; at the St James's, 1929/1930; and at the Palladium for five consecutive Christmases, from 1930 until the end of the 1934/35 season. Other actresses took the part subsequently at the Palladium, but Jean Forbes-Robertson returned to play it for the last time there for the 1938/39 season.This is one of several wax figurines modelled by Agatha Walker in the 1920s and 1930s, mostly of actors and actresses in costume for roles in successful productions on the London stage. There had been a craze for ceramic figurines of performers in the 19th century and Walker attempted to revive this tradition with her limited edition sculptures. They were modelled from life in plaster and coated with a fine wax layer which was then coloured. In 1931 there was an exhibition of her wax figures at the Fine Art Society.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.Condition report: The figure has been reset to the base plinth. Evident cracks to the ankles and the sword - also to the blade 2/3rds up the sword. Chips to the hair. Some minor chips and wear to edges. The velvet base is discoloured and colour lost.
