Aside from presenting a complete description of the game, the author tries to prove, from the point of view of both canon and civil law, that chess is exempt from general bans on games of chance because it is a game of skill.

Illustrated with almost a hundred gambetts,  engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles II, woodcut title border. Full leather bound, tooled boarders front and rear, raised banded spine, spine (upper) label damaged. Provenance: Leonard James Shrubsall (1879-1952, book collector, bookplate to front pastedown). Marbled end papers. Bookers sellers pencilled comments on endpapers, and penned comments from previous owner to Shrubsall dated 1857.

Greco was one of the most celebrated players of the seventeenth century and importantly recorded many of his matches as he travelled across Europe. A complete copy of one of the most famous early chess books.  Full leather bound with raised banded.  Rubbed and bumped spine and boards.
