Deacon at the Angel in Gilt-Spur-Street, [c.1688-89] [ESTC R175526] Provenance: Thomas Pengelly (1675-1730), Lord Chief Justice, thence by descent. RARE. First published during the Civil War, this text is one of the earliest 'turn-up' religious texts. A 1650 example in the British Library [669.f.15.(34)] would appear to be smaller. A similar example to the one offered here may be found in the Bodleian Library, under the Anthony Wood Collection. [Wood 25E (10)]. No other coloured examples are known.

They had three sons, William I (b.1743), Charles (b.1744) and Frederick (b.1747). Charles distinguished himself with a military career in Denmark, rising to become Commander of the Royal Guard, Governor-General of Norway and Governor of Schleswig-Holstein. He died in 1836 of natural causes.

On June 16th, 1944, Lascelles travelled with George VI to visit Field-Marshall Montgomery at his headquarters near Creully, France. In his diary, Lascelles notes, 'Here, after a visit to his famous caravan, we lunched - the King, Monty, Dempsey (GOC Second Army), Kit Dawnay, Ramsay, two ADCs and myself; a good luncheon, with genuine Camembert cheeses - a thing we'd not seen in London since 1940. The King then held a small investiture, elaborately staged by Monty, who made a speech about each investee (whose decorations, by the way, I had been carting about in a pouch ever since we had left London).'
