Lot 289

*Smith (Percy J. D., 1882-1948). A sketchbook of pencil drawings, approximately 50 pages, each with numerous pencil sketches, including studies of anatomy and bone structure, drapery and figure studies, animal drawings, etc., a few additional leaves loosely inserted, together with several autograph letters signed from Percy Smith to his wife Marion (Ellen Marion Delf-Smith, 1883-1980), one containing a small sketch, plus a thin notebook with manuscript title label on upper wrapper 'P.J.S. Notes 1938. (27 Rudall Crescent, Hampstead, N.W.3)', and a copy of The First Edition Club Opening Speech by Mr. Holbrook Jackson at An Exhibition of Percy Smith's Typographical Work, original printed wrappers, one of 500 copies, plus an apparently unrelated small album of original drawings, some signed M.L. Burnell Etcher and letterer Percy Smith trained at the Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts. He served in WWI, taking his sketchbook with him. He was arrested twice for his propensity to draw, on the suspicion that he was a spy. However, after he was proved to be innocent, he was asked to draw the stages of assembly of a huge howitzer gun. His famous 'Dance of Death' series of seven etchings show the futility of war. The letters from Percy Smith to Marion, written in the 1940s, are in the chatty and informal style one might expect from husband to wife and cover a range of topics, including description of a portrait in progress of Lieutenant Gunz, talk of air raids, information about the weather and the garden 'the rain has "picked up" the lettices [sic] astonishingly', amusing anecdotes about Tittles (presumably a cat), health issues, description of a Rembrandt 'all the near paintings nearby looked so "thin" in comparison so shallow', and mention of a visit to Sir Edwin Cooper. "Prince d'Essling, grandson of Andrea Masséna, Napoleon's ablest marshal, and son of a passionate book collector, Prince François-Victor, assembled a vast collection of early Venetian woodcut books which served as the basis for his bibliography of Venetian illustrated books 1450-1525 (preceded by the description of a xylographic book and followed by a summary list of some noteworthy later volumes). It is the most exhaustive bibliographical study of illustrated books of any place, country, or period hitherto published and set new standards for descriptions." (B.H. Breslauer - R. Folter, Bibliography, its History and Development, New York 1984, no. 144, pp. 186-187). This is no. 158 of a limited edition of 300 numbered copies.Deluxe copy - complete with the original publisher's wrappers - of the first edition of the bibliography compiled by the outstanding scholar Victor Masséna Prince d'Essling (1836-1910). A fundamental work which has a place of honour in the shelves of libraries, antiquarian bookshops, and private collections. Essling himself was a great and refined collector of illustrated books: his collection was mostly acquired by Vittorio Cini (see lot 14), and is now preserved in the Fondazione Cini at Venice. The deluxe issue - one of the most luxurious bibliographies ever appeared, and printed in a limited edition of only 300 copies - was finely printed by Alexandre Brande on hand-made paper du Marais. A copy of Essling's Les livres à figures vénitiens was displayed in 1981 at the Grolier Club's exhibition "2000 Years of Bibliography". The Bassanese publishers had close relations to ecclesiastical authority, and the press was frequently used "as a weapon in the defence of orthodoxy" (P. In astuccio originale in tela azzurra, leggermente scolorita. One work in 3 volumes (345x250 mm). I. XXI, [1], 125, [5] pages. Frontispiece. 26 plates in the text; 207 numbered plates. II. Minor wear to the spines. In the original slipcases, slightly discoloured. The most important bibliographic work compiled by the renowned Italian bookseller and collector Tammaro De Marinis (1878-1969), a veritable milestone in the study of Italian binding: the first and rare edition of the monumental La legatura artistica in Italia, which contains the descriptions of over 3.000 bindings, executed in the period 1450-1550, and generally seen by the author. The bindings described were mostly executed in the period 1450-1550, and are classified by cities or type. The three-volume publication was finely printed by Giovanni Mardesteig on hand-made paper, in a limited edition of 500 copies, about half of which was destroyed in the Florence flood of 1966. A dramatic circumstance which increases the value of the copy offered here.

Orlandi Pellegrino Antonio. Pagine [8], 448, [2]. Completo dell'ultima carta bianca. Marca tipografica incisa su legno in fine. Alcune lievi gore. Legatura coeva in pergamena su piatti in cartone. Dorso liscio, titolo su tassello in pelle. Tagli marmorizzati. Balsamo, La bibliografia: storia di una tradizione, Firenze 1984, pp. 99-101; A. Serrai, Storia della bibliografia, VII, Roma 1997, pp. 575-576.Two parts in one volume, 4° (229x166 mm), running pagination. [8], 448, [2] pages. Complete with the last blank leaf. Woodcut printer's device at the end. Author's monogram on both title-pages. 5 full-page woodcuts, showing various printer's devices. Woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces; the headpiece on fol. [Ï€]3r includes the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Antonio Ghislieri. A good copy, browning and foxing throughout. A few spotting, more prominent to the first quire. A few pale waterstains. Contemporary vellum over pasteboards. Smooth spine, title on lettering-piece. Marbled edges. Some stains to the covers, small wear to the lower board edge. Front joint cracked, the lower extremitie of spine slightly detached. Copy entirely annotated by a contemporary hand, in brown ink; the same hand had written the author's name on the title-page 'Del P.e Pellegrino Ant.o Orlandi Carmelitano'. First and rare edition of this remarkable work by the Bolognese Orlandi (1660-1727; see subsequent lot), whose name appears at the end of the dedicatory epistle to Marquis Ghislieri. It is the first bibliography on incunables to appear in print in Italy, three years after the Annales typographici by Maittaire (1719). Orlandi's publication was printed in 500 copies. In the first part of the work the entries are arranged chronologically, and then subdivided according to places and printer's names. The second part is compiled in Latin, and lists the editions in alphabetical order. The copious marginal and interlinear annotations show that the copy offered here was once owned by of a very skilled, and so far unidentified bibliographer or collector, who had added bibliographical information, and frequently supplemented the entries with the marginal note 'apud me', i.e. 'kept in my library'. A highly interesting feature which deserves further investigation.
