He spent his working life in Shanghai until he left in 1926.During his time in China he held interests in a Christian Mission school and helped to support street children.He seized every opportunity to visit other parts of China and took thousands of photographs. He purchased widely on his travels, particularly woodcarvings, bronzes, traditional kimonos, paintings and porcelain. He treasured silver items and bought much to take home. He travelled home at least four times during his stay in China and these return visits were round-the-world trips in which he travelled through and visited Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Egypt and The Holy Land, the Far East, Canada and USA.On his return to the UK he lived in Northampton where he was a lay preacher and a local councillor. He gave a great many talks on his experiences in China and the many other Countries he had visited.He died in 1962.

The line engraving is one of three compositions engraved by William Blake from Flaxman's design. Flaxman's first series of original drawings for the Iliad was commissioned by Georgiana Hare-Maylor, a painter and scholar who was living in Rome at the same time as Flaxman, and were published in Rome in 1793, and in London in 1795. A second set of drawings on the same subject were made by Flaxman for Robert Fullaton-Udney. The 1805 edition of the work included three new plates engraved by Blake, and two by James Parker (plates 1, 2, 5, 14, and 37 respectively).

Violet Tweedale nee Chambers (1862-1936) was a Scottish author, poet, spiritualist and keen golfer! She was the eldest daughter of Robert Chambers Jnr., editor of Chamber's Review and granddaughter of Robert Chambers, publisher and founder of W & R Chambers. This is a really nicely bound scarce book in full red leather with raised bands, gilt lettering and gilt page edges on top.
