The voyage was intended for the exploration and survey of the Pacific coast of North and South America and the Pacific Basin. The various harbors along the coast of California and northwest to Alaska were surveyed and a month`s journey in open boats was made up the Sacremento River and San Francisco Bay. The Hawaiin Islands the Marquesas the Society Islands the Tonga Islands the New Hebredies the Solomon Islands New Guinea etc. were visited. George Henry Ford (1809-1876) was the expedition member responsible for the majority of the original drawings and he also executed the corresponding plates. The breakdown of plates is as follows: Aves: 114 plates (all hand-coloured one an aquatint); Reptilia: 78 plates (75 hand-coloured); Invertebrae: 4 plates (all hand-coloured); Mammalia: 52 plates (48 hand-coloured plates 18 and 37 never published); Pisces: 31 plates (29 hand-coloured).

Newton`s Methodus Fluxionum was originally written in 1671 but the Latin manuscript which before his death he entrusted to Dr. Henry Pemberton remained unpublished until Colson`s translation. In it Newton presents a method of determining the magnitudes of finite quantities by the velocities of their generating motions. Provenance: James Hamilton of Cornacassa Co. Monaghan; Dacre Hamiton of New Park Co. Monaghan (19th century ink inscriptions to title and A2).

In essence it was a large pawn-broking scheme which provided `relief of the industrious poor by assisting them with small sums upon pledges at legal interest`. Corruption and fraud were soon associated with the organisation with Smollett calling it a `nefarious corporation`. The scheme collapsed in 1731.
