Grays Elegy, Illuminated by Owen Jones, published by London: Longman and Co., New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1846. first edition. 35 chromolithographed pages including title, illuminated in colour and gold, the text of the poem in black gothic script with colour initials surrounded by borders of leaves and vines, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, binders small paper label on lower pastedown, contemporary blind-stamped full-calf over wooden boards imitating carved wood, blind-stamped floral design with cover title to front board, the first secular book to be illuminated in its entirety by the English architect and designer Owen Jones (1809-1874) the first known work to be issued in this special binding by Remnant and Edmonds, and the first recorded book with a joint American and English imprint on the title-page. 8vo. Ellis.The letter is 20th May 1870 and reads 'Dear Sir, Thanks for your note, I have marked the place indicated by you for correction. Yours faithfullyWilliam Morris'.Also signed inside by C.J Rea (1894) and J Sutcliff. This letter was written by Morris from his publishers office 33 Kings Street, possibly to Mr Sutcliff, regarding amendments to be made, there were a number of editions and Morris was known to have made changes to these. (Sm.Qty.)⁂ Harry Pollitt (1890-1960) British politician who twice served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain. The loosely inserted newspaper clipping advertises a lecture given by Pollitt on "Marx and the Working-Class Movement". Of the loosely inserted photographs, one shows a young Pollitt talking with an unknown gentleman, and the others a house where Pollitt lived.
