Paul Christian Kirchner first published JŸdisches Ceremoniel in 1717, following his 1709 conversion from Judaism to Christianity. The foreword announced his intention to convince other Jews to follow his example. In 1724, the amateur Hebraist Sebastian Jugendres collaborated on a new edition of JŸdisches Ceremoniel which included a new foreword and a series of copperplate engravings depicting Jewish customs and rituals, including labour and birth, circumcision, marriage, death, mourning, holidays and daily devotional practices. Expressing the Title, which the Venetians pretend unto the sole dominian, and absolute sovereigntie of the Adriatick Sea, commonly called The Gulf of Venice), two large eng. maps to text (Aa4 recto and Zz verso), four woodcut illusts. (M3, Ee2, Ff2 and Ii2), a few minor marks, last few leaves with a little damp marking to upper portion of fore-edge only, 3 pp. contemp. ink annotations to blanks at rear, contemp. reversed calf, endpapers renewed, rebacked with orig. spine laid down, rubbed and marked, folio (generally in good condition) Wing S2432. The first edition of Selden’s famous reply to Grotius’s Mare Liberum which sought to deny England’s claim to ownership of the seas between Britain and the European mainland. The Pforzheimer copy (which is significantly defective) contains an engraved allegorical frontispiece by Peter Lombart after S. Clein, which does not appear in any other copy of this edition that we have traced, including the British Library (Pforzheimer 858). (1)
