It guides students carefully through all the steps, and provides large samples of the patterns described. A second edition was required the following year, and a third followed in 1881. Woolnough's great contribution was to open up the technique of marbling, remove the mystery, and make it readily available to any who desired it. His work was the standard until the publication of Joseph Halfer's 1889 text. Woolnough's book, and his subsequent writings, are not only important for the technical details they provide; they also give us a window on the sociological and economic aspects of the industry in England" - Easton. The 5 leaves showing twenty mounted samples, and 34 sample leaves of marbled paper were all executed expressly for the work under the immediate superintendence of the author, and most of them by his own hand.

Orbeli (Joseph & Trever, Kamilla). Muse?e de l'Ermitage. The Hermitage has the most important collection of Sassanian silver objects in the world. Details regarding the majority of the contents of the collection were first published by Iakov Ivanovich Smirnov (1869-1916) in 1909 in his “Vostochnoe Serebro: Atlas Drevnei Serebrianoi i Zolotoi Posudy Vostochnago Proiskhozhdeniia, Naidennoi Preimmushchestvenno v Predielakh Rossiiskoi Imperii” (Catalogue of ancient eastern objects in silver and gold, found mainly in Russia, published in St. Petersburg by the Imperial Archaeological Commission), when knowledge about the field was still rudimentary. The work of Orbeli and Trever was the first time the complete collection was published and with correct attributions and analysis. It was published in conjunction with the 3rd International Conference in Iranian Art and Archaeology held in St. Petersburg in 1935. Iosef Abaraovitch Orbeli (1887-1961) was a Russian orientalist and academician who specialized in Iranian studies, Armenian and Kurdish philology, and archaeology. In 1920, he joined the Oriental Department of the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad as a curator, and in 1926 he became the head of this department. He played an invaluable role in the development of this department, which is still one of the richest departments of the State Hermitage Museum. In 1931, he participated in the second International Congress on Iranian Art and Archaeology in London and organized a rich exhibition of art pieces from the State Hermitage and other Soviet museums. The great impression that this exhibition produced influenced the decision to organize the Third International Congress on Iranian Art and Archaeology in the USSR. In the same year, a permanent exhibition of the Oriental Department was opened in the Hermitage Museum as a result of his extensive scholarly work. In 1934, he was appointed the director of the State Hermitage Museum. He also took an active part in organizing the Third International Congress in Moscow and Leningrad in 1935. The art of Sasanian Iran, which had inspired craftsmen and artists of the Caucasus and Central Asia for many centuries, even after the fall of the Sasanian dynasty, was one of the major subjects of Orbeli’s research work. He continued the scholarly traditions established by J. I. Smirnov. The latter published his album Oriental Silver in 1909, which reproduced most of the pieces of Sasanian metalwork known by that time. Smirnov, however, failed to publish his comments to the album, which still remain in manuscript form. The results of his investigations were most probably well known to Orbeli, who was interested, not just in the different aspects of Sasanian art, but mainly in its influence on the art and culture of neighbouring peoples. In his introduction to “Orfevrerie Sasanide” (published in 1935), he surveys the finds of Sasanian metal in Russia and suggests the possible ways they reached there. Many of his suggestions on the trade routes that functioned in antiquity were confirmed by later investigations. Ethnographic parallels allowed Orbeli to identify the function of some of the popular forms of vessels, such as “lobed bowls,” which were used for fruits and sweets. Orbeli did not write much about the technical aspects of Sasanian metal, since he was interested more in iconography and its development within the context of changing Iranian society. In 1955, Orbeli took the position of the head of the Oriental Faculty at Leningrad State University, and the following year he was appointed the head of the Leningrad branch of the Institute for Oriental Studies, the USSR Academy of Sciences. Under him, the Institute quickly grew into the largest centre of Oriental studies in the USSR. Kamilla Vasilevna Trever (1892-1974), was a Russian historian, numismatist and orientalist, specialized in the history and culture of Transcaucasia, Central Asia and Iran. Her major scientific contributions began after she was elected as a research fellow at the Imperial Archaeological Commission in 1918, and began her work at the State Hermitage Museum. Her work at the Hermitage began in the Greek-Scythian department and brought her into the orbit of Orbeli, with whom she would have a lifelong collaboration, working on Sasanian toreutics and numismatics, and pre-Islamic Iranian material culture and history more broadly. She was the force behind the 3rd International Conference in Iranian Art and Archaeology in 1935, which is remembered as a watershed moment for Soviet studies on Iran and the Near East.

** Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (1889-1946)MT (Motor Transport) (Black 43) The very rare woodcut printed in brown, 1918, an excellent impression, signed in pencil, from the edition of 12, on oriental laid paper, with margins, image 214 x 285mm (8 1/2 x 11 1/4in)This print was first exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in March 1918. Jonathan Black notes "The experience of being picked up by a lorry- known as 'lorry jumping' - either when returning from a rare ten days' leave (which a British soldier in the ranks might expect to be given every 14 to 18 months), or setting out for Calais or Boulogne to catch a leave ship home, was depicted in the early 1918 woodcut MT. From the glum expressions and the skilfully delineated dejected body language of the troops in the back of the lorry, one can imagine the former scenario is presented in MT. This was one of a handful of woodcuts Nevinson produced in 1918-19, no more than four or five in total." (Black, C.R.W Nevinson: The complete prints, page.36).** This lot has been imported from outside the United Kingdom to be sold at auction under temporary importation, and therefore the buyer must pay the import VAT at a rate of 5%. Luís, D. Henrique and D. Duarte, who were his disciples. According to Henrique Leitão, “De arte atque rationi navigandi”, published here for the first time, it is considered “the author's most important book and, therefore, the most important book of Portuguese Science”. Joint edition of four important scientific texts, the first two with consecutive pagination and a single common title page. The two remaining texts with independent title pages and pagination, show the particularity that the dates of the foot press were manually amended, at the time, from 1571 to 1573. Both have the indication on the face of “Secunda editio”. Copy missing the 6th preliminary leaf that should contain the errata and, on the verso, a representation of the compass rose; with slight browning and occasional slight tide stains. Face of the second part (De erratis...) slightly shorter. Circular stamp (±25 mm) erased on the three title pages, resulting in slight abrasion; minor restoration on the last sheet. Interesting ownership manuscript on title page, signed by Caspar Hersbach Agrippinas (Cologne printer and publisher), dated 1619. Recent binding, full canvas in shades of parchment. Anselmo, 861. The sisa, an indirect tax on the transactions of goods, came to represent more than three quarters of the Crown's revenues, namely in the reign of King D. João I. Complete copy, matching exactly with the collection of the copy from the Library of King D. Autograph signature of Duarte Nunes de Leão in the lower margin of folio xxxvij, after taxes. Title page with small ink stains; old annotations on the verso (blank) of the second folio; small wormhole on the lower margin of the first 12 leaves; excessive cropping (carmine edges), affecting the last line, claim on the last leaf and some current titles. The first, still from the 16th century (along with the pamphlet “Geografia antiga de Lvsytania”) and the last, which Inocêncio considers the most difficult to find, are particularly rare. The project for the work was conceived by Friar Bernardo de Brito (in the century, Baltasar Brito de Andrade) as a grandiose history of Portugal, but the chronicler, born in Almeida (1568-1617) only completed the first two volumes. Frei António Brandão (Marcos Brandão), born in Alcobaça (1584-1637) was the author of the second and third parts, which many consider more reliable. Frei Francisco Brandão was also a native of Alcobaça (1601-1680) and was responsible for the fifth and sixth parts. The last two parts were respectively written by Frei Rafael de Jesus (Guimarães, 1614-1693) and Frei Manuel dos Santos (Cantanhede, 1672-1740). The specimen has some imperfections, which we now describe. First volume with restored first two folios and mirrored title page; restoration in the margin of folio 75, with loss of some text (glosas). Geography only preserves the first and last folios (with serious restoration, but preserving the entire text); all remaining six folios have been replaced with quality photocopies on laid paper. Second volume with folio 338 and 343 manuscripts in humanist handwriting from the 17th century, with restorations on the outer margin (and lower margin on the second). Fourth volume with title page restorations, where the ink of an owner's signature has corroded the paper. Sixth volume with wormholes restored on the outer margin (sometimes reaching the text), from p. 489/490. The seventh volume does not present the rare allegorical half-title, which, incidentally, is not mentioned by most bibliographers. Eighth volume with rough restorations in two sections (P and Q, ie 12 folios). Copy with stamps from Quinta das Lágrimas in all volumes and occasional minor stains. Full sheepskin bindings, recovered, with new endpapers. Inocêncio, I, p. 373 and 98; VII, p. 49; VI, p. 102. Samodans, 2115. Ameal, 1549.

The work, written between 1477 and 1485 by Fernando de Mexia (1424-ca. 1500), is part of the treatise tradition inspired by the works of Bartolo de Sassoferrato and Honoré Bonet, both from the 14th century, translated into Castile by Diego de Valera, in the following century. The “Nobiliário vero”, as it is better known, is divided into three parts and a prologue with the dedication to Fernando II of Aragon, the Catholic. The first part is a universal history from Adam and Eve, for the purpose of explaining the origins of the nobility; a dissertation on the foundations of the work of Bartolo de Sassoferrato follows; the third part is a treatise on heraldry, containing definitions of arms, insignia, coats of arms, flags, metals, and colours, which are distinctives of the nobility. At the end, it includes the following colophon: Acabouse la presente obra sabado xxx. de junio. año dela incarnacion: de mil y. ccc. xcij. años. En la muy noble y lleal çibdad d[e] seuilla impressa por llos onrrados varones maestros. Pedro brun. Juã gentil. fiel y verdaderamente corregida &c. Fully printed edition in two columns (three on the table) in Gothic characters, with sheets 5 and 7 composed on the front in black and red. The 93v sheets. to 95 v. include 64 small heraldic-themed xilographies depicting weapons, weapon quotas, insignia, banners, etc. Treated copy (washed and re-glued), slightly cropped, with the prejudice of occasional marginal notes from the period, which appear a little faded; it preserves, however, good margins. Fresh, fully binding of stiff parchment. Palau, 167245. Goff, M531. Haebler (Bibliography), 411. Maria Valentina Mendes (Os incunábulos das bibliotecas portuguesas), 1226. Although the verso of the last sheet bears the statement COME- the copy is complete as no more text has been printed. Slightly cropped specimen, with slight foxing and discreet handling. Some imperfections on the title page: circular stamp (ø 36 mm) erased, causing severe abrasion; minor restorations on the upper and outer margins; ancient ownership with three initials F.X. S. Two last leaves with minor stains; occasional underlining and pencil annotations. Contemporary binding, made fully of flexible parchment, with tries and new endpapers. Samodães, 2933. Palha, 797. The first Portuguese edition of the Index was published in 1547, followed by the editions of 1551, 1559 and 1561. The fifth edition is composed of two parts, published simultaneously, the first corresponding to the Roman catalogue and the second to a supplement in Portuguese “com as regras [...] trasladadas em linguage[m] vulgar [...] para proveito daquelles que carecem da lingua latina”. The edition of the Index from 1597 already follows the new Roman catalogue, promulgated at the end of the papacy of Sixtus V and was published at the initiative of the general inquisitor and second bishop of Elvas, D. António de Matos de Noronha (1591-1610). The “Rol dos Livros” has, at the end, the printed signature of the Dominican Inquisitor Fr. Emanuel da Veiga (†1575). At the end of the 1597 Index, the autograph signature of Fr. Francisco Pereira, SJ(?) qualifier and reviewer of the Holy Office. Volume cropped with damage to the xilography frame of the first title page, but not of the other sections that preserve good margins. In his introduction, Father Simão de Vasconcelos (1597-1671), rector of the schools of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, proposes the theory that the Earthly Paradise would be located in Portuguese America. Although the licenses were granted between May 18, 1661 and November 7, 1662 (?), the visiting priest considered that such assertion was contrary to the dogmas of the Catholic faith and demanded that such a passage be suppressed. Thus, in all known copies, the pagination jumps from p. 178 to p. 185.However, in the present copy, the two leaves corresponding to pp. 185 to 188. At the end, between pages 481 and 528, it includes the Latin poem "De Beata Virgine Dei Matre Maria", by Father José de Anchieta SJ, who composed it «...quando esteve em refens entre Indios barbaros, com a ajuda da Virgem, escrevendo na praia em lugar de papel, que alli não tinha, nem tinta». The person responsible for the four volumes was Father Manuel de Góis SJ (1543-1597), born in Portel, a distinguished figure in the golden period of Jesuit teaching in Coimbra. Junto com; -----.- [...] DE VERA REGVM | PORTVGALLIÆ GENEALO- | GIA LIBER. | AD SERENISSIMVM PRINCIPEM ALBERTVM | ARCHIDVCEM AVSTRIÆ, S.R.E. | CARDINALEM.- Oisipone, Anno MDLXXXV.- 50 f.; 23 cm.- E., First edition of a controversial work, published in response to the positions taken by the Dominican Fr. José Teixeira, supporter of D. António, Prior do Crato, who he followed until the end of his life, in exile in France, where he enjoyed the admiration and favour of Henry II and Catherine de Medicis. The last 49 pages include, with its own title page, but constituting a single typographic unit, the original edition of the “True genealogy of the kings of Portugal”, which would be published in vernacular (Castilian) five years later. Both works are dedicated to Archduke Cardinal Alberto of Austria. Copy only cropped at the head, keeping wide margins. Title page with extensive annotation and stain, passing on to the next two pages; about a third of the sheets with old annotations on the margins; two sheets with the upper outer corners burnt, without harming the text; occasional light stains on the upper margin of some leaves; rare minor wormholes. Contemporary binding, full flexible parchment, retaining the original endpapers. Regarding this work, we quote Alberto Navarro, Viscount of Trindade (Manuscritos & Livros Valiosos, Telles da Sylva, vol. II, p. 155): “Deste raríssimo livro [...] há exemplares na Nacional, na Torre do Tombo e na Ajuda; em livrarias privadas, parece-me que somente na minha”. Anselmo, 968. Monteverde, 3795. D. Manuel II Library, 241 and 243. BN (16th century), 405.

1995 Porsche 968 Club Sport CoupéRegistration no. M985 NFJ (see text)Chassis no. WP0ZZZ96ZSS815260Odometer reading: 100,904 kmMOT: N/A*Limited edition, lightweight, high-performance variant*Left-hand drive*First UK registered in 1999Announced in 1991, the 968 was the fourth of Porsche's family of front-engined sports cars. Styled along Porsche 928 lines, the 968 retained its 944 predecessor's basic mechanical layout while improving on its specification, boasting a 2,990cc engine and six-speed manual transmission. Porsche's big four-cylinder now boasted 'Variocam' variable valve timing and produced 240bhp, good enough for a top speed of 156mph with 60mph coming up in 6.2 seconds. Intended for enthusiasts seeking enhanced on-track performance, the lightweight Club Sport did without much of the 968's 'luxury' equipment; for example: there was less sound deadening insulation and the window lifts were hand operated, though features such as air conditioning, a sunroof, and an audio system remained available as options. The rear seats were deleted; the fronts replaced with lightweight Recaro competition seats; and a non-airbag steering wheel fitted. There was also a less complex wiring loom and a smaller battery; the result being a reduction in weight of around 100kg when compared to the standard 968. Improvements to the running gear included revised suspension, lowered ride height and 17' wheels shod with wider tyres. In 1993, the Porsche 968 Club Sport was voted 'Performance Car of the Year' by the UK's Performance Car magazine. A left-hand drive model, this desirable, limited edition Porsche was first registered in the UK in November 1999. Accompanying documentation consists of copies of the car's last V5C Registration Certificate and the sales invoice issued by Gmund Cars Limited of Knaresborough on 5th June 2009 when the car was sold to the current owner. The Club Sport has been on static display for a number of years and as such will require recommissioning prior to road use. Please also note this Lot is subject to UK import tax if it is to remain in the UK.
