However there is no pl.L tout court and the book is complete conforming to Keynes.

Sowerby (J.) English Botany first edition a collection of c.320 loose plates about a third of which are uncoloured the others hand-coloured and a third are original pattern plates so marked and a number with extensive and interesting directions to the colourists soiling and marks of use including colour samples pencil notes and sketches on some versoes some margins folded in (perhaps to make sending in the post easier) unbound [c.1850-60]. *** Numbered between 2868 and 2990 these belong to the last two volumes of the very rare supplement which was edited by William Salter a Sowerby son-in-law. The instructions give a vivid impression of the to-and-fro between the editor the artists and the colourists: “very carelessly & badly done must be altered”; “Add a bit of dead old stem in the middle where I have put it in pencil”; “Mr Lees wil oblige Mr. Salter by returning this with remarks as to color &c”; “Color 50 first & send home Monday evening.”

This was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. Turner died in July of the same year in his home in Crutched Friars...” Chapman & Tweddle p.12. The sheets of the second part seem to be the original 1562 edition with new prelims.

[Lewin (William)] [Birds Of Great Britain] Grasshopper Wartler; Black-cap Warbler; Dartford Warbler; Long-Tailed Titmouse 4 watercolours from The Birds of Great Britain numbered in pencil and with titles verso loose sheets 4to [1789-94] (4) ***William Lewin 1747-95 used original watercolours to illustrate the first edition of The Birds of Great Britain and painted 323 illustrations 60 times for his subscribers. He later etched and hand-coloured the plates in preparation for a second edition of the work. He was thought to be `the best zoological painter and one of the most practical naturalists of his day.` [Jackson p.336-7](4)

Wilkin 1695.*** Scarce. Woodward believed that the Earth had originally been submerged under a universal deluge suspending stones minerals and animals which then subsided into a stratigraphic succession dependent on the gravity of the individual components. His work despite its flaws helped to create a wider interest in fossils and earth sciences.

Smith (1822-98 Naturalist Rector of Yatesbury Wilts) with manuscript notes of date and location half calf rubbed 8vo 1858. *** For another book similarly extra-illustrated see first Walpole sale lot 50. Smith is best known as the author of The Birds of Wiltshire 1887. Many of the plants were named by the Rev. T.A. Preston author of The Flowering Plants of Wilts 1888.

Part I containing the Genera pp. 11(12) folding leaf `General plan of the tables` tables I-XXVII (VIII omitted as it contains no British plant) mostly folding 11 leaves of index contemporary half russia spine lettered “Genera” perhaps lacking a second part of species bought from Maggs with their partial description inserted oblong 8vo printed by J. Davies 1787. *** The preface is unsigned but is clearly by Lord Bute “The following distribution is the same followed in the former edition without any abridgment though reduced into a small compass...for the convenience of those who have the work in quarto and who may wish to carry it with them into the field...”. By “the former edition” is meant Bute`s celebrated Botanical tables 9 vol. 1785 printed in 12 or possibly 14 copies and a well known botanical rarity; Henrey 1398 collates the first volume of this and comments “Table VIII is omitted as it contains no British plant” just as here. Henrey 1419 records Bute`s A tabular distribution of Biritsh plants 1780 from a single copy in NHM and this is all that is found on ESTC. However Cambridge and Kew have copies of our edition perhaps with a second part though the collations do not make this clear (the Cambridge copy is mis-attributed to Sir John Hill). We have been able to trace no other copies anywhere. If as Bute`s introduction suggests our book was intended to accompany copies of the Botanical tables then its exteme rarity is explained.

Of the first edition 1596 only a single copy is known. Copac lists a second copy of this at NHM but this is a manuscript not the printed book.(3)
