SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. An excellent T.L.S., G. Bernard Shaw, two pages, 4to, n.p. (on his personal printed stationery with addresses in Welwyn and London), 25th November 1949, to A.S.E. Ackermann. Shaw writes on the subject of authors and publishers and states, in part, 'Many authors print at their own expense and publish “on commission”: that is, deliver the books printed and bound, paid for and ready for sale, to the publisher with his imprint; and he sells them for a commission of 10 or 15%. But as he also does the necessary dealing with the printer and binder as well as the bookseller, the author may have no contact with them……The royalty system is a necessity for authors who have no capital, which is the plight of most of them. The publisher supplies the capital, and, as printers have to keep a huge plant and will give long credit rather than have it idly rusting, the publisher, if the book sells well, never puts his hand in his pocket at all. He makes 300% net on the venture and gives the author 10 or 15 or at the outside 20. The author who has capital enough to pay for the manufacture reverses the transaction and makes the 300%, giving the publisher 10 or 15. [John] Ruskin and Herbert Spencer are notable examples of this practice. [W.H.] Davies, the Supertramp poet, began by having a long poem printed and bound for cash across the counter and peddling it from door to door…..I gather that you, like Davies, are doing without a publisher; but you can find a reputable one (beware of pirates) who will take you on commission'. A letter of good content. One small tear to the edge of the right fold, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VGAlfred S. E. Ackermann (1867-1951) Consultant Engineer and Secretary of the Society of Engineers. At the time of the present letter Ackermann was on the point of a 4th edition of his Popular Fallacies which had first been published by Cassell in 1907. The 1950 edition came out with the imprint of the Old Westminster Press, London, who had also printed his Scientific Paradoxes and Problems and their Solutions in 1925. Simpkin Marshall, the famous wholesalers, were the sole distributors, so it appears Ackermann followed Shaw's advice.

DUNANT HENRI: (1828-1910) Swiss Promoter and co-Founder of the Red Cross. Dunant was a Humanitarian social Activist. The 1864 Geneva Convention was based on Dunant´s idea for an organisation to take care for wounded soldiers. Dunant was awarded with the first Nobel Peace Prize, being also the first Swiss Nobel laureate. An excellent and very rare A.L.S., H. Dunant, four pages, Heiden, 6th June 1902, to Madame Severine, Hotel Beau Rivage, Luzern, in French. The letter bears to the heading two large written underlined words `Personal´ and `In a Hurry´ , Dunant stating in part `Do you want details about the very first origins of the Red Cross? I can give you some; different to the ones which have been published by various newspapers..´, further saying `Three months ago I was asked to write an article to be published in an important American journal. I started the first pages, but the whole remained there…´, and further again `It is thirty years now that "A Memory of Solferino" is out of print; nobody and nowhere it is known except by its name. This week the new edition has been published..´. A letter of very good content. Accompanied by the original envelope in Dunant´s hand, postmarked and post-stamped, bearing two black seals to the verso. Small overall age wear, with tears to centre folds and a very small area of paper loss to the bottom edge, not affecting the text or signature. G

T.L.S., Italo Calvino, one page, 4to, Rome, 19th June 1959, to Howard Greenfeld of The Orion Press Inc. in New York, on the printed stationery of the Giulio Einaudi publishing house. Calvino writes in slightly broken English and states, in part, 'you are right in solicitating me. I am in debt with you of an answer for introduction and for translation. I've given a first glance to the translations, and they seems me generally good; I was waiting for a day of free time to write you a letter of particular observations, but I'm always so awfully busy!.......As a general observation, I should prefer a very dry way of translating, everywhere it is possible. For the introduction, I can write it again in an abridged edition. When does it need?' Some very slight, extremely minor creases to the corners and a couple of very small areas of paper loss to the edges, otherwise about VG The present letter would appear to relate to the publication of Calvino's Italian Fables, the First American edition of which was published by the Orion Press in 1959 having been translated by Louis Brigante.

Lot 256

Tyler Durden's (Brad Pitt) photo-matched red leather jacket from David Fincher's drama Fight Club. Durden wore his signature jacket throughout the film, including when he first asked The Narrator (Edward Norton) to hit him as hard as he could, when he held Raymond K. Hessel (Joon B. Kim) hostage, and when he and The Narrator debated which celebrity each would fight. This rust red leather slim-fitted, hip-length jacket, one of the most emblematic examples of Durden's bohemian, mishmash 1970s-inspired wardrobe, was one of several jackets used in the production of the film itself and was also used for marketing purposes. This jacket photo-matches to a promotional shot on the July 1999 cover of W Magazine; the magazine featured an article with Pitt in several film-used costumes. The jacket was custom-designed for the film and features a button-up front with four brown plastic buttons, two outside flap hip pockets, maroon lining on the interior, and contrasting cream-coloured double stitching throughout. This lot is in excellent overall condition with signs of intentional distressing by production, including chipping on one of the buttons, staining on the left breast, a break in the stitching on the back, and some cracking on the leather of the sleeve collars. Included with the lot is a copy of the July 1999 edition of W Magazine.Estimate: £20,000 - 30,000 Ω
