Central Asia.- Wolff (Rev. Joseph) Narrative of a Mission to Bokhara, in the years 1843-1845, to ascertain the fate of Colonel Stoddart and Captain Conolly, 2 vol., second, revised, edition, half-titles, 9 lithographed plates, 16pp. publisher's catalogue at end, very occasional spotting, original blind-stamped green cloth, the Countess of Meath's copy with her ink signature to upper covers and head of first leaf of text/title, uncut, a little rubbed, spines faded, slight staining to vol.1, 8vo, for the author, 1845.⁂ Col. Charles Stoddart had been sent to Bokhara in 1838 to negotiate a treaty but offended the Emir Nasrullah Khan and was imprisoned in a deep verminous pit, joined by Capt. Arthur Connolly in 1841. The missionary Rev. Joseph Wolff set out for Bokhara in 1843 in an attempt to rescue them, unaware that the two officers had already been beheaded the previous year. Wolff almost suffered the same fate but the Emir regarded Wolff as ridiculous dressed in "full canonicals" and let him go.
