The first edition was published in 1487 in Antwerp, followed by the 1488 edition in Delft, 1495 and 1499 in Zwolle and again in Antwerp in 1510. Lot 22

Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) - Salvator Mundi / Description: This impressive large woodcut bears the little serpent in the bottom left corner, the artists mark of Cranach, but without the Saxon shields on left and right side of Christ. It is the first woodcut from a series of fourteen showing Christ, Apostles and Paul. The series was very popular and at least six editions and four copies exist. The first copy was published by J. Schöffer in 1516. I was not able to assign this woodcut to a particular edition or copy. Regarding the paper and the watermark it can be assumed this is an early copy from the 16th century, extremely close to the original. It shows the Lucas Cranach design in all his splendor.--- This large woodcut depicts Christ as Salvator Mundi, or Redeemer of the world. Traditional motifs in such a depiction are the blessing gesture with the right hand and the orb with cross in his left hand. The royal robe with prominent brooch also emphasizes Christ's divine nature. With his head slightly inclined, he looks intrusively at the beholder. A radiant nimus encloses his head and is surrounded by a cloudscape populated with numerous childlike angels. Striking is the winged serpent located on the lower left on the Earth. Possibly this represents original sin, which was overcome by the coming and sacrifice of Christ. / Dimensions: 33,10 x 18,90 cm / Condition: Excellent impression in excellent condition on watermarked laid paper. / Literature: Hollstein / German engravings, etchings and woodcuts c.1400-1700 (31)-----Dodgson 1903, 1911 / Catalogue of Early German and Flemish Woodcuts in the BM, 2 vols (II.312.103.)-----Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (VII.281.23) --- Cf. Nuremberg Chronicle - Creation of Eve - Possibly Dürer sketch -1493 / Description: Old coloured woodcut from the first edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", from 12 July 1493. . The wood blocks were designed by Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and their assistants, including the young Albrecht Dürer, who was apprenticed to Wolgemut at the time. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, who was Durer's godfather. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Durer's tutor between 1486-90. The young Dürer was working in the workshop in the years 1486-1489 when many of the early designs for the Chronicle were made and he was probably involved in a certain amount of them. In the case of this 'creation of Eve' the sketch (which still exists) is possibly by Albrecht Dürer, this attribution is supported by the striking resemblance between the head of Adam and the figure of the first woodcut of Durer's Apocalypse. (See Adrian Wilson - 1976: The' making of the Nuremberg Chronicle, p.100.). The further woodcut drawing and carving however lost some of the fluidity of the sketch. Here we have a fine oldcoloured example of this impressive woodcut from the old coloured luxury editions of the Cronicarum who were of the most expensive ones. / Dimensions: 25,50 x 22,50 cm / Condition: Excellent condition. / Literature: Liber Chronicarum, here a first edition , printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg on 12 July 1493 in old colouring. The luxury editions in old colouring are mentioned in literature and were of the most expensive. --- Adrian Wilson - 1976: The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle. / Medium: Woodcut /Circa: 1493

Nuremberg Chronicle - Creation of Eve - Possibly after Dürer sketch -1493 / Description: Old coloured woodcut from the first edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", from 12 July 1493. Adam works hard as Eve suckles Cain and Abel after the expulsion from Eden. From 'Nuremberg Chronicle' or 'Liber Chronicarum' by Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514). The wood blocks were designed by Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and their assistants, including the young Albrecht Dürer, who was apprenticed to Wolgemut at the time. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Durer's tutor between 1486-90. Since the young Dürer was working in the workshop in the years 1486-1489 when many of the early designs for the Chronicle were made he might be involved. In the case of Adam and Eve after they left Eden, the preliminary sketch has been preserved. (See Adrian Wilson - 1976: The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle, p.105). The rhythmic flow of the thick and thin lines of this sketch is that of a master hand and the treatment of the facial features suggests Durer's sketch of the Madonna enthrone with Saints, now in Musée Bonnat, Bayonne. The tree of Cain and Abel on the backside is as also based on a preserved sketch (See Adrian Wilson - 1976: The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle, p.105), also one of the few designs possibly made by Dürer. Here in a good impression from the old coloured luxury editions of the Cronicarum who were described as the most expensive ones. / Dimensions: 25,50 x 22,50 cm / Condition: Excellent condition. / Literature: Liber Chronicarum, here a first edition , printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg on 12 July 1493 in old colouring. It is one of the best-documented early printed books. It is classified as an incunabulum, a book, pamphlet, or broadside that was printed (not handwritten) before the year 1501 in Europe. The luxury editions in old colouring are mentioned in literature and were of the most expensive. ----- Adrian Wilson - 1976: The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle. / Medium: Woodcut /Circa: 1493

A number of pottery banks (money bags) approach from the left to do battle with the treasure chests, barrels and strong boxes on the right; coins and broken boxes and bags litter the foreground. / Dimensions: 23,60 x 30,60 cm / Condition: A superb, evenly printed impression with strong contrasts on cream laid paper. The print is complete with full plate borders and half centimeter margins. / Literature: Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (53) --- New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) / The New Hollstein: Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts 1450-1700 (33.III) --- Bastelaer 1908 / Les estampes de Peter Bruegel l'ancien (146) --- Lebeer 1969 / Catalogue raisonné des estampes de Bruegel l'ancien (54) --- Riggs 1977 / Hieronymus Cock, Printmaker and Publisher (42) ----------------- Latin verses in lower margin: “What are all these riches, such an enormous pile of shiny golden metal, the chest filled with new coins? Between such great temptations and the bands of thieves, the cruel grappling hook shall serve as a sign for all: the booty makes the thief, all evil is born of glowing desire, and the cruelly gained booty fits the plunderer.” Dutch verses in lower margin: “Go to it, you money-boxes, barrels, and chests. It's all about money and goods, this fighting and quarreling. Even if someone tells you otherwise, don't believe it. We thus bear on our standards the hook, which never has failed us. They try to weaken us, but one would not wage war against the other if there was nothing to plunder.” --------------------------------- The first edition lettered "Aux Quatre Vents" was probably published by Cock's widow, Volcxken Diercx, after Cock's death in 1570. Given that this would place the print after Bruegel's own death in 1569, it is likely that this was a design intended by Bruegel for engraving, but which had not yet been carried out at the time of his death. This would likely place its execution in the early 1570s. See Riggs, p. 55. / Medium: Engraving /Circa: Ca. 1556-1570

Whereas in his prints of the early 1960s Hockney had treated the paper as the support for a tactile and often heavily textured surface, in these images the white of the paper become both an enveloping atmosphere – all the more physically palpable for being undefined in its limits – and an equivalent for the sensuous smoothness of skin.Hockney’s originality as an illustrator is amply demonstrated in the Cavafy prints by his decision not to make pictures of particular poems but to capture the general mood in Cavafy’s poetry of a nostalgia for the erotic and then to select the poems to accompany the images.’Marco Livingstone, David Hockney: Etchings and Lithographs, Thames and Hudson, London, 1988, pp.20-21

The Italian company SIMON produced the present prototype table with thirteen feet impressed upon the tabletop, but due to high production costs this planned mass-produced version was never executed. Instead, SIMON produced a cheaper version with only two feet impressed upon the tabletop. The production of the present table was not commissioned by Oppenheim; but it was a prototype produced by SIMON in order to present to Oppenheim the possibility of creating a mass-produced version of her art. The present prototype table is possibly the first example created after the original and is the genesis for the later and ubiquitous version produced by SIMON with only two feet imprinted upon the tabletop, an adaptation that was never approved by Meret Oppenheim. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
