Skelton, n.d., c.1790, numerous full-page eng. plts., a few minor marks and title and first few leaves to first vol. with waterstain to lower margins, modern antique-style half calf gilt, large folio. An unusual provincially published bible, printed by the Southampton printer Thomas Skelton (who also published Netley Abbey, 1795, The Southampton Guide, 1797 and 1802/3, etc.). The illustrations were engraved specifically for this edition by a Southampton engraver Thomas Scott Seed. (2)

The editio princeps of the bible in Swedish, which was based on the first complete edition of Luther's Bible of 1534 (D & M 4199), known as Gustav Vasa's Bible, a copy of which was provided for every church in Sweden. New Testament [Latin]. Novum Testamentum. Interprete Sebastiano Castalione, Basel, per Joan. Oporinum, 1553, woodcut initals (with early yellow colouring), neatly ruled in yellow-brown ink throughout, a.e.g., contemp. calf, somewhat worn with backstrip partly def., joints cracked, 8vo Sebastian Castellio was an associate of Calvin in Geneva, and an important figure in the early years of the Reformation. His plan to publish a latin translation of the New Testament, was refused permission by Calvin, when Calvin realised that Castellio's translation threatened his authority on a number of points of theological interpretation. Consequently Castellio left Geneva for Basel where the first, and this second, edition were printed. (1)

The bookform edition itself is very rarely seen. Curiously, an advertisement appears in the 1869 volume of 'The Boys' Journal' for 'Five Weeks in a Balloon', to "commence next month in the July number of The Boys' Journal". This, Verne's first work, was first published in bookform in England by Chapman and Hall in 1870. (3)

Sibbald, Sir Robert. Scotia Illustrata sive prodromus historiae naturalis. Edinburgh: J. Kniblo, J. Solingen and J. Colmar for the Author, 1684, first edition, 3 parts in one volume, folio, woodcut device on title, 21 (of 22) engraved plates on 11 leaves, contemporary calf, spine gilt, without the engraved heraldic plate (as often), neatly rebacked retaining original spine Note: “The first comprehensive attempt to depict the fauna of Scotland.” (Anker). The physician, antiquary and naturalist Sir Robert Sibbald (1641-1722) was chiefly instrumental in founding the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In 1682 he was appointed physician to Charles II and, at the instigation of his patron, the Earl of Perth, Geographer of Scotland. Scotia Illustrata, his best known and most elaborate work, consists of three parts. The third part, De Plantis Scotiae tam indigenis quam Hortensibus, includes a short chapter on the Edinburgh physic garden, the first botanical garden in Scotland (and the second in the British Isles after Oxford), which owed its inception to Sibbald and Andrew Balfour. Each of the three parts has its own title-page dated 1684. Plates numbered 9 and 11 appear on a single leaf, and there is no plate numbered 10.
