Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817), Maria`s father, was married four times, his wives including two of the beautiful Sneyd sisters. The Anglo Irish Edgeworth household was full of young children since Maria, who was Edgeworth`s second child by his first wife, was born in 1767 and the youngest in 1809. It is likely that Maria gave Harriet Edgeworth (1801-1889) the six volumes in July 1811 when at Edgeworthstown for in a letter to her aunt Margaret Ruxton (1745-1830) on the 30th August she wrote "I have written a little play for our present large juvenile audience [Maria`s sister Anna Beddoes and her three children were staying at Edgeworthstown] not for them to act, but to hear; I read it out last night and it was liked. The scene is in Ireland and the title "The Absentee". .....Anna`s children are very affectionate Henry is beautiful and the most graceful creature I ever saw. The eight children are as happy together as the day is long, and give no sort of trouble." [ A J C Hare, The Life and Letters of M E 1894, vol 1, p178]. Harriet, and Sophy Fox (1803-1836/7) who acquired the books in 1836 were two of Edgeworth`s daughters by his last wife, Frances Ann Beaufort. William Edgeworth (1794-1829) whose signature is dated 1817 was a child of the third marriage, his mother being Elizabeth Sneyd (d 1797).
