NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Burliuk (David & Vladimir) and others. Poshchechina Obshchestvennomu Vkusu [A Slap in the Face of Public Taste], first edition, one of 600 copies, light age-toning, some marking to early ff., original burlap wrappers, small stamp on lower wrappers, small related inscription to upper wrapper, [MoMA 12], small 4to, Moscow, G.L. Kuz'min, 1912. ⁂ One of the most famous and iconoclastic early Russian Futurist publications , not least as a key early work by the Hylaea group. The title derives from the manifesto undersigned by the Burliuk brothers, Aleksei Kruchenykh, Velimir Khlebnikov and Vladimir Mayakovskii, which directly struck out at the more established Russian writers such as Blok, Dostoevsky, Gor'kii, Pushkin and Tolstoy. The work also features four prose-studies by Kandinskii, included without his consent, and the artist later distanced himself from the movement's more extreme sentiments

Lot 77

NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Burliuk (David & Vladimir) and others. Sadok sudei II [A Trap for Judges II], first edition, one of 800 copies, on green paper, 15 letterpress illustrations (6 by Elena Guro; 3 by David Burliuk; 2 by Natalia Goncharova; 2 by Mikhail Larionov; 2 by Vladimir Burliuk), wallpaper wrappers with mounted printed title, rebacked in plain paper, preserved in later patterned drop-back box, [MoMA 53], small 4to, St Petersburg, Zhuravl, 1913.⁂ An important example of early Russian avant-garde collaborative effort. The work includes a Futurist manifesto, New Principles of Creation , demanding a new language called zaum (see lot 319) that adopts a typically Futurist take on the usage of grammar, syntax, punctuation & rhythm, and is accompanied by similarly wilful, unconventional illustrations by several of the preeminent Russian Futurist artists.

Lot 78

NO RESERVE Russian Avant-Garde.- Burliuk (David & Vladimir) Vladimir Mayakovsky and Velimir Khlebnikov . Trebnik troikh: sbornik stikhov [Missal of the three: a collection of poems and drawings], first edition, one of 1,100 copies, 13 illustrations after the Burliuk brothers, Mayakovsky and Tatlin, small mark to lower fore-corner of title, original wrappers with printed label on upper cover, small stamp on lower cover, overall a fine example, [MoMA 54], small 4to, Moscow, G.L. Kuzmin and S.D. Dolinsky, 1913.⁂ Trebnik troikh is an important Futurist work, primarily as the first anthology to contain exclusively poetry, but also due to the fascinating styles brought to bear by the likes of Khlebnikov, whose often linguistically challenging pieces are unclear whether fragment or whole, and Mayakovksy and his use, here for the first time, of the compound rhyme that would become his signature style, with its urban imagery and Cubist influences.
