(Venezia 1879 - Venezia 1933)Cm 28x37 | In 11.02x14.57Oil on panelA daughter of art, she was initiated at an early age into painting by her father, Guglielmo Ciardi, a protagonist with Favretto of the Venetian School of the Real and from 1894 holder of the chair of "Town and Sea Views" at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. Together with his father and brother Beppe Ciardi they painted from life, as Guglielmo had learned at the Academy when, a pupil of Domenico Bresolin, he was brought by the master into the presence of nature. Emma Ciardi is a woman for the time in which she finds herself living, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, outside the box. She lives the transition between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the midst of epochal revolutions that will transform the world, chooses to fit into the tradition of vedutismo that has its masters in Carlevarijs and Canaletto, and does so with a personal and unmistakable style. A constant presence at the Biennial (from 1903 to 1932, except for the 1926 edition), he travels, knows English and French, takes his Venetian parlar around the world, participates in all the most important national (Turin, Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples) and International (Munich, Barcelona, Paris, Buenos Aires, Pittsburgh, San Francisco) art festivals, holds his solo exhibitions in London (1910, 1913, 1928), Paris (1914), New York (1924), Brussels (1925), Chicago (1924), the most accredited gallery owners offer her their spaces to show her works in Milan, London, Paris, New York, collectors from all over Europe and America buy her paintings, newspapers speak of her as "among the most interesting and most personal painters, painters and not women painters because Ciardi is such an artist that she needs no such distinction." Not many women can make a profession out of their talent, Emma does and with an entrepreneurial spirit unheard of for a woman of the early twentieth century she marries her work. A true star of the time. Even D'Annunzio passing through Venice goes to visit her in her atelier where, without getting lost in "ciacole," she works. Thinking that a painter should express himself with his brushes and colors and not with words, she repeats, "Co le ciacole non si fanno i quadri." A woman of few words and a lot of work (as Ugo Ojetti wrote about her in the Corriere della Sera in 1909), she obtained in the first three decades of the twentieth century public and critical recognition and awards in Milan, Berlin, London, Paris, Brussels, New York, and San Francisco. An extremely fecund painter, her paintings are scattered all over the world, she works for an international clientele that from Venice to London and from New York to Buenos Aires requests her paintings. While Picasso initiated with Cubism a veritable revolution in the field of art by subverting the traditional way of viewing a painting and creating an obvious shock in the public, Futurism launched incendiary proclamations subverting tradition, Emma Ciardi entered the great vein of Venetian vedutista painting. She studies and loves Guardi and, like Cataletto does with the camera ottica, photographs the motifs that strike her or paints en plein air, like the Impressionists in parks and gardens of aristocratic mansions and then processes the impression in the studio. She writes, "I have made two studies, but the painting I have not yet found. These are tints that I will need to compose the paintings that always have to be invented," an obvious statement of poetics and operative practice. He chooses to portray the landscape, makes portraits of cities with which he becomes acquainted Florence, London, Paris, Basel, Bruges. Venice and ancient gardens populated by ancient ladies and knights are the great protagonists of her repertoire. In the gardens that make her famous, she starts from life, observes and fixes the landscape before her eyes then, in the studio, brings into the compositions a crowd of characters dressed in eighteenth-century fashions arranging them on the scene studied from life. They are not characters, actors (her models are wooden mannequins two span high that Emma herself drapes in eighteenth-century robes and tricorns), but pure semblances of light, conjured up to act out the fable of life. For Emma, the real is the base, the springboard to the dream. Her figures, luminous as if they were emanations of places, stand out chromatically on the meadows like gems set in green. Her light and bright painting is dense with matter; one has to look closely at her paintings to appreciate the rich, color-filled thickness of her painterly touch. He often uses white; every inch of painting is a chromatic feast, a feast for the eyes. In the last period of his existence he found new inspiration in Refrontolo, in the Treviso countryside, where he bought a house and retired to the quiet of the countryside to paint. Here, dormant whispers and rustles, idylls, dances and madrigals, vezzi and graces (words that often return in the titles of her works) it is nature that speaks in her paintings with grandiose simplicity. If at the time Emma's painting appealed without disturbing, even today her skillful craft, her minute, fractured brushwork, teeming with hues, fast, that she is able to evoke with the slightest touch of the brush a gondola, a parasol, a Pierrot's guitar, with a touch that is always sure, without retouching "i quadri va in malora se i xe titignai," sparkling knows how to fascinate and seduce. In the tamed landscapes, in the combed skies, in the radiant and poignant Venices, together with Emma we seek the beauty for which the human being of all times yearns. She died in Venice on November 16, 1933. In the Information Sheet handwritten by Emma in 1932, kept at the Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts in Venice, she states that her works have been acquired and are held in public collections in Vienna, New York, Munich, Barcelona, Brussels, Washington, Oran and Buenos Aires.

Pablo Picasso (1881 Malaga - 1973 Mougins) (F)'Spanish pitcher', white stoneware, polychrome painted, dimensions 18 cm x 12 cm x 26 cm, on the reverse EDITION PICASSO 139/200 MADOURA inscribed and numbered, MADOURA PLEIN FEU and EDITION PICASSO stamped, partially minimally stained, rubbed on the reverse side, Literature: Cat. Rais. Ramié 244, with colour ill. Pablo Picasso is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His extensive oeuvre includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, graphics, literature and ceramics. During his lifetime, he certainly influenced his close artist colleagues as much as they influenced him - especially since he lived with some colleagues in the famous Parisian Bateau-Lavoir and shared its studios with them. He thus worked on Cubism with George Braque, as well as creating his most famous works Guernica and the Demoiselles d'Avignon. In addition to these world-famous works of art, the 3000 or so ceramics that Picasso made are little known, but no less important. These ceramics were created in an equally creative and almost experimental process as he pursued for his sculptures and paintings. Picasso's ceramics are not just a by-product of his artistic activity, but an artistic opportunity to offer his creativity further possibilities of expression. An enormous body of work was produced with which he wanted to challenge and overcome the existing art system. For by mixing utilitarian objects and works of art, he was able to find a way not to glorify art, but to let it flow into everyday life. Picasso wanted to make his art accessible to a broad public. His ceramics and especially the serial editions enabled him to achieve this goal: through the form of utilitarian ceramics. During a pottery exhibition, the artist met Suzanne and Georges Ramie, the owners of the Madoura ceramics workshop. Picasso made his first experiments with ceramics. He used clay, created fauns and nymphs, decorated plates and platters with his favourite motifs such as the bullfight, women, owls, goats, used unusual supports and developed a white clay mass himself. Time and again, his ceramics reveal how closely Picasso was rooted in the millennia-old history of ceramics. From classical Greek vases with red and black figures to the Etruscan buccheri, the clay vessels of the pre-Hispanic cultures and the popular ceramics from Spain and France. Picasso was familiar with the numerous ceramic objects of the ancient Mediterranean cultures exhibited in the Louvre in Paris, owned many books on ancient art and drew his inspiration - both in terms of the forms and the themes of a large part of his ceramics - from vessels with human or animal forms. The artist even created fictitious "ancient" ceramics and painted archaeological ceramic fragments. It is essential to note at this point that Picasso's ceramics not only refer to the traditions of this art form, but also to his own development as an artist. Through various ceramics, it becomes clear how he uses his creative experiences as a painter, engraver and sculptor and the corresponding motifs of his paintings, lithographs and drawings in the shaping and painting of the stoneware. Likewise, he used his newly gained experience from this work for works of art in painterly form. Thus, he also renewed the specially created motif of the dove, which he designed as a poster for the Paris World Peace Congress in 1949 and which is still considered a worldwide symbol of peace today.

2003 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG Transmission: automaticMileage:96600The fifth generation of the legendary SL series convertible sports cars was known as the R230. It featured a fully retractable hardtop that was marketed as the Vario Roof, a first for the SL class although it had been available on the smaller SLK model since 1997. The flagship models were built by AMG in the form of the SL55 and SL65, both highly tuned versions of the SL500 and SL600 respectively. The SL55 was powered by a mighty supercharged version of the 5.5 litre, V8 which produced 493bhp and achieved 0-62 in 4.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph (governed). In theory, the SL55 could reach 190mph if the car was derestricted but, for many, the acceleration and top speed is impressive enough in its standard form! The Mercedes-Benz SL55 is no shrinking violet but the previous owner of this car was not satisfied and wanted to attract even more attention. A full wide bodykit was used to convert the SL55 AMG to a recreation of the later Brabus SL65 Black Edition with the help of a professional ADAIR kit. Subject to a light Category D insurance loss in 2013, ADAIR used this opportunity to facelift the headlights and expertly replace the panels with the wide body kit. The car today looks every part its £280,000 plus sibling, a real wolf in wolfs clothing and is described by our vendor as 'an absolute goliath of a car'. We are informed that the engine has been breathed on with the intention of achieving 600bhp, however until dyno tested this is still an unknown. The incredible sound from the exhaust is enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end making this an exciting car to drive and own. We are informed only one genuine SL65 Brabus Black Edition car exists and is held in a collection owned by the Dubai Royal family. An AMG supercharged V8 with the roof down is a perfect motoring scenario and so desired by fans of the SL Mercedes-Benz. Offered with a MoT test certificate, this stunning SL will turn heads at every opportunity and will be sure to do the same when offered at auction. The vendor states this the most amazing vehicle he has ever driven, the power and sound make this vehicle truly a one-off beast.

Lot 215

1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL California Transmission: automaticMileage:65513The stylish Mercedes-Benz W113 was presented at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show and replaced both the expensive 300 SL and entry-level 190 SL with one medium-priced two-seat sports car. The SL was a huge success, with 48,912 sold in nine years, and is now considered a true masterpiece. The body combines the elegantly trim look of contemporary Mercedes saloons with a simple grille derived from the 300 SL. Béla Barényi conceived the patented concave hardtop, soon called the 'Pagoda.' Like the best designs, the W113 has proven to be timeless in its appeal. We are pleased to offer this superb low mileage, three owner from new example which is an original and rare 'California Coupé', with the single bench seat as designated by option '417' on its factory record.Originally purchased in July 1969 by its first owner, a Mr. Luigi Bresciani an Italian ice cream manufacturer who ordered the Mercedes as a retirement present to himself. Interestingly Mr. Besciani ordered the Pagoda in UK right hand drive specification but had it delivered to his Italian residence. Later in 1972 he returned to England to join his family bringing the Pagoda with him. The Pagoda remained his pride and joy until 1982 when at the age of 80 he found his health failing and with great reluctance arranged for the car to be sold. At this stage, the car had covered some 51,000 miles. The car was then sold to its second owner, who at this time carried out various maintenance work to insure the car was ready for further use. The Mercedes was enjoyed for a further 8,000 miles and was taken around the country as well as on the continent. More recently 868 VC was purchased by our vendor at Historics auction for a figure of £113,200, elated by his purchase there were no thoughts to sell until he received the news that his driving licence was to be rescinded therefore he is forced to sell after a relatively short tenure.Offered with over four decades of single ownership, this superb example has covered a mere 65,513 miles and has had just three owners from new having been purchased recently for over £113,000. Accompanying the Pagoda is a sizeable history file with many documents, sundry bills, service records, MoT test certificates, and even the March 1983, edition of Classic and Sports which the car featured in!Having been dry stored since 1982, this Mercedes was last MoT'd in the early 2000's and has been used sparingly since but recently recommissioned by our vendor and running as it should. Presented in very good, preserved condition the paintwork retains a deep shine and shows little sign of age as does the interior and chrome work. Having covered little mileage from new and with a superb three owner history, this example represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire an ever-desirable right hand drive 280 SL Pagoda.
