(10)⁂ The first concerns the production of "lustrings" (a light, glossy, black silk) begun by the Royal Lustring Company in 1688, but the trade had largely collapsed by 1698, the number of operating looms having shrunk from over 700 to fewer than 50. Under its Royal Charter the Company enjoyed a monopoly in England and French imports were prohibited, which presumably led to a significant increase in smuggling. The Committee's investigation was both thorough and lengthy, the consequent report throwing considerable light on the organisation of the contraband trade. ESTC describes the final leaf as being blank but the leaf present here is obviously part of the work and always has been, to judge by the stab-holes.

(10)⁂ The first is largely a chronological diary of imports and exports of grain, and the consequences of government action from September 1800 to the end of 1801. It is rare with Library Hub recording only one copy of this first edition (Manchester Public Library). The extensive list of subscribers is almost entirely made up of Liverpool residents including the banker, lawyer and art-collector William Roscoe. The second item is one of two editions listed by ESTC, of 1774 and 1788 respectively. Both are extremely rare, ESTC lists only the British Library copy of either.

In the first volume is a "chronological list of the principal trials by Naval Court Martial under the existing laws" with the date of trial, name of defendant, rank, ship, nature of charges or offences, how proved, and the sentence imposed.Sir Edward Codrington (1770-1851), naval officer, commanded a ship at Trafalgar, was appointed rear-admiral in 1814, and became commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean fleet in 1827.General Whitelocke's court-martial was the inevitable consequence of his enormous and disastrous ill-judged, and ill-directed, campaign against Spanish forces in Buenos Aires and the Plate region of South America in May-July 1807.The last resulted in a judgment in favour of the plaintiff, Anthony Fabrigas, a gentleman-farmer, and the award to him of £3000 damages with all costs. This is one of two different editions of this year. ESTC records only 2 UK copies of this edition (BL and St John's College, Cambridge) with 5 more in North America.

Observations on a pamphlet, touching the present condition of the Navy and victualling, both published in 1700. The pamphlet questions the legitimacy of impressment and raises concerns about payment. ESTC records only 2 UK locations (BL and University of Wales) and 5 in America.Of the second item ESTC again lists only 2 UK copies (Cambridge and National Maritime Museum) with 7 more in America.

Focusing particularly upon the state of existing masts and sails, the author promotes the funding and provisioning of improvements in naval equipment, at the same time as also revealing the subtleties of the command structure and the professional expectations of the officer class in the Royal Navy. Rare, with only 2 copies on Library Hub (BL & National Maritime Museum, although third edition specified) and WorldCat adding 2 copies in America.The Royal Naval Annuitant Society had been established in 1823 to provide annuities for dependents of deceased members. Lt. Richard Bastard served in the Royal Navy from 1798-1834. Library Hub lists a few of the Society's Rules and Regulations but none earlier than 1825 (although Plymouth Library does apparently have a copy of this 1824 edition).

An address to the public, occasioned by that part of the alleged "Refutation" published by the writer of Kendall's narrative..., Northampton, 1814 and Davies (W.P.) A Refutation of the Charges alleged against the writer of Kendall's Narrative..., Northampton, 1814 and Some account of the trial of Huffham White, Robert Kendall, and Mary Howes, (otherwise Taylor)..., Northampton, 1813 and Predestined Thief (The); or, A dialogue between a Calvinistic preacher and a thief condemned to the gallows..., 1814, together 7 works in 1 vol., some spotting and soiling, old library blind stamp to first title, engraved bookplate of George Chetwynd, later half calf, uncut, new spine label, 8vo et infra bound into 8vo⁂ A collection of seven pamphlets by participants in, witnesses to, or contemporary commentators on the notorious Leeds Mail Coach Robbery of October 1812. Robert Kendall and Huffham White removed sixteen bags of mail from an apparently moving coach, which continued for several miles before the robbery was discovered. Enquiries by Bow Street officers led to Bristol and then Liverpool, where Kendall and White were arrested after a violent struggle in the cellar of a house. After being found guilty at a 14-hour trial involving forty witnesses, White and Kendall were executed at Northampton in August, 1813. Kendall's conviction aroused some controversy when the Methodist minister W. P. Davies claimed that the verdict was unsafe, with the evidence against him being wholly circumstantial.

Maritime.- Congreve (Maj. Gen Sir William) A Description of the Sights, or, Instruments for Pointing Guns...for the Use of the Navy...., second edition, half-title, 3 engraved plates, 2 folding, contemporary ink inscription of Henry Beaufoy to head of title, light marginal water-staining, original boards, rubbed, rebacked, folio, 1819.⁂ A relatively little-known contribution to military technology by William Congreve (1772-1828), best known now for his designs for military rockets. Among the 18 or so patents taken out by Congreve between May 1808 and February 1827, none appears, however, to be for his gun sights. First published the previous year Library Hub list 3 copies of the first edition and 2 of the second (BL & National Maritime Museum).Henry Beaufoy was a son of the astronomer and physicist Mark Beaufoy (1764-1827), a founder member of the Society for the Improvement of Naval Architecture. It was Henry who in 1834 was to publish his father's experimental research into the relationship between hull shapes and water resistance.

It was so popular that it required a police officer to keep order in the rush of the first week's borrowing.The second item concerns the dispute over plans for a new university library in Cambridge. Rickman & Hutchinson had submitted a design in competition with Decimus Burton, William Wilkins and C.R.Cockerell. The members of the Library Syndicate kept changing their minds as to the winner, provoking a pamphlet war, but in the end Cockerell's design was chosen although only part of it was built, in 1836-37.

Having worked in the brickyards himself as a child he obtained some education and was appointed the manager of a brick and tileworks at Coalville in Leicestershire. The Cry of the Children, published in 1871, drew attention to the plight of child workers in the brickfields and resulted in legislation to regulate and improve conditions, but also caused him to be dismissed from his post. He then proceeded to campaign for the education and improved sanitary conditions of children living on canal boats, and for gipsy children.
