Castell (Robert) The Villas of the Ancients Illustrated, first trade edition, large paper copy, 13 engraved plates and plans, 9 double-page, engraved head- & tail-pieces and 5 illustrations in text, without the list of subscribers as issued, title lightly foxed, occasional light spotting or soiling, one leaf with short tear at lower margin, original boards, uncut, worn, spine defective, folio, for the author, 1728. *** Castell was jailed in Fleet Prison as a debtor on 18 June 1728. Three months later the prison governor, Thomas Bambridge, moved him under protest to a sponging house where there was a case of smallpox, which he contracted and from which he died before the end of the same year. As a result of this and other cases of abuse a House of Commons committee was set up to investigate the current state of prisons. Their report, delivered to the House on 20 March 1729 included details of Castell`s death, and as a result Bambridge was charged with murder. He was tried and acquitted; Castell`s widow lodged an appeal and Bambridge was re-tried and once more acquitted. The Villas of the Ancients was published in July 1729, making the most of the publicity Castell was receiving from his widow`s appeal. Most of the original 117 subscribers were MPs or lawyers drawn together in the interests more of prison reform than architecture Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports

He “entered the service of the crown as a dockyard clerk in July 1671. In 1675 he became clerk to the clerk of the acts whose office was then held jointly by Thomas Hayter and John Pepys a younger brother of Samuel Pepys...[In 1689] Sergison was...appointed...and remained clerk of the acts for thirty years for the most part single-handed but from 1701 to 1706 jointly with Samuel Atkins formerly clerk of Samuel Pepys. During this period which included the war of the Spanish succession as well as the little war of 1718 the work of the navy board was excessively heavy and Sergison won the highest opinion of the several administrations with whom he acted. The emoluments of the office were large though rather by perquisites and fees than by pay and in 1691 Sergison was able to purchase Cuckfield Park in Sussex. During the reign of Anne he more than once asked for permission to retire but was told that he could not be spared. Afterwards when he was superseded at the age of 65 in 1719 he seems to have felt it as an undeserved insult.” DNB.
