A translation of Ne pas croire ce qu'on voit, 1670, based on 'Spanish plots', in this case deriving from the works of Pedro Calderón de la Barca.

(Kafka (Franz) Die Verwandlung [Metamorphosis], first edition in book form, staining to a few leaves, text block broken, original pictorial wrappers printed in red and black, uncut, a little rubbed and soiled, rebacked preserving most of slightly frayed spine, a few neat repairs to edges and split fold of rear wrapper, lower joint broken, new red endpapers, 8vo, Leipzig, Kurt Wolff, 1916 [but 1915].⁂ One of the most important and influential novellas of the 20th century, which first appeared in Die Weissen Blättern in 1915. Die Verwandlung was one of the few works by Kafka published within his own lifetime. Kafka took a close interest in Ottomar Starke's illustration for the cover, specifying that "The insect itself must not be illustrated by a drawing. It cannot be shown at all, not even from a distance."

Forster (E.M.) Howards End, first edition, Edith Nesbit's copy with her ink ownership inscription "E. Nesbit Bland, November 1 1910" to endpaper, presentation copy with ink stamp to title, 12pp. advertisements at rear, pencil correction and a few marks to margins, some light marginal soiling, browning to endpapers, original cloth, spine faded and with small internal tear, spine ends and corners bumped and frayed, splitting and old glue repair to lower joint, extremities rubbed, [Kirkpatrick A4a], 8vo, 1910.⁂ An excellent association copy. Forster first met Nesbit at her house in 1909. Nesbit had contacted the author after reading and admiring A Room with a View and wrote to invite him for lunch and to discuss his work. The two authors became friends and Forster would make regular appearances at Nesbit's gatherings of writers, artists and intellectuals. It seems likely that this copy was sent to Nesbit at Forster's request.

Originally envisaged as having all 150 in the same brown binding, the production was undertaken in a somewhat haphazard manner and only 20 copies were ultimately bound as intended before the sheets were passed on to a bookseller for selling (see next lot).

It also contains an itinerary of the New World and the discovery of Mexico, translated by Luc de la Porte from the writings of Father Margin Ignacio, which details his travels to Mexico, the Canaries, Santa Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.

It is the first edition of the Greek New Testament from the Imprimerie Royale, founded by Louis XIII in 1640. It is a substantial reprint, with a few alterations, of the New Testament printed by the Elzeviers in 1624, adding a 30-page appendix of Variae Lectiones. The text was set in Garamond's Greek types, used by the Estienne dynasty of printers, and which subsequently became part of the type holdings of the Imprimerie Royale

This bilingual edition was edited by the Heidelberg physician Johannes Obsopaeus (1556-1596), supplementing it with his extensive commentaries.

Greene (Graham) A Gun for Sale, first English edition, occasional spotting, pp.7-10 with lower corner torn away (not affecting text), original cloth, light toning to spine, spine ends and corners a little bumped and frayed, faint rubbing or marking to covers, but very good generally, 8vo, 1936.⁂ One of Greene's scarcest novels. The action of A Gun for Sale in part anticipates that of Brighton Rock as Raven's killing of Kite in the former allows Pinkie to take over the gang at the start of the latter.

Three Things, 1929 § de la Mare (Walter) News, 1930, limited large-paper editions signed by the authors to limitation page, illustrations, original boards, lightly toned, spines and extremities chipped; and 3 others from the Faber Ariel Poems series signed by the authors, 8vo (5)⁂ A very attractive group of poems, all signed. The first is from an edition of 300, others from an edition of 500.

Greene (Graham) The Comedians, first American edition, author's own copy, specially-bound and presented to him by his American publishers, signed card of Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier loosely inserted, contemporary half morocco, gilt, a little rubbed at spine, 8vo, New York, 1966.⁂ Greene's American publisher presented him with a specially bound copy of each title they published for him. Along with a card signed by the notorious Duvalier whose bloody regime is depicted in the novel and who denounced Greene in a brochure titled "Graham Greene Demasqué".

Insects.- Moffet (Thomas) Insectorum sive Minimorum Animalium Theatrum, first edition, title with superb woodcut of a skep bee-hive surrounded by other insects, woodcut of skep repeated at end of preliminaries, numerous woodcut illustrations in text, interleaved copy, L5 with short tear to upper margin just touching text, worm hold to last 3 gatherings, more noticeable to final 2 ff., occasional browning, armorial ink stamps to title, contemporary reverse calf with arms in blind to covers, spine chipped at head, folio, [British Bee Books 25; Nissen ZBI 2852; STC 17993], folio, Thomas Cotes...[and] Benjamin Allen, 1634.⁂ Moffet's was "the best work of its kind...it set a new standard of accuracy in the study of the invertebrates" (Garrison-Morton). He was educated at Cambridge and Basel, where he obtained a degree in medicine, travelled widely in Europe before establishing a practice in Ipswich and London and serving as physician to Queen Elizabeth's forces in Normandy in 1591. The first edition has three variant imprints.Provenance: Arms to title and covers speculated by University of Toronto to be those of Thomas Hussey (d.1641), M.P for Grantham or to John More (d.1641), doctor and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

It lays the foundations of his Epicurean atomism.

Provenance: 'Ex libris Tho. Henshaw, Empt. Hafniae Junii 3d, 1672' (ink inscription to front free endpaper). In 1672 Henshaw travelled to Copenhagen with Charles Stewart, 3rd Duke of Richmond and ambassador extraordinary to the Danish court, during which stay he purchased the present volume.

Spanish plays.- Teatro poético : repartido en veinte y un entremeses nuevos, first edition, water-stained, spotting, lightly browned, contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, 8vo, Zaragoza, For Juan de Ibar, 1658.⁂ A rare compendium of plays from the Spanish Golden Age, which we are told on the title were selected from the best of Spain. WorldCat records only four copies, none of which in the UK.

Lamb (Charles & Mary).- [Thelwell (John)] The poetical recreations of the Champion, and his literary correspondents : with a selection of essays, literary & critical, which have appeared in the Champion Newspaper, first edition, with 5pp. of autograph notes by the author (2 ff. bound in at start and 1p. to verso of title), lacking half-title, 2 ms. ff. frayed at lower corners with some loss and repairs, stained, printed text with some spotting and light staining, later half calf over contemporary marbled boards, boards scuffed, 8vo, Printed at the Champion Press ... by and for J. Thelwall, 1822.⁂ The notes concern the structure of language and oration. The work contains 12 pieces by Charles Lamb and one by Mary. Provenance: Denis Florence McCarthy (1817-1882) Irish poet, translator and biographer (his note to front free endpaper regarding the volume).

M.CC.XV Islandice conscripta per Snorronem Sturlae, 3 parts in 1, first edition, woodcut initials and tail-pieces, 2 errata ff. at end for all parts, occasional spotting, lightly browned, contemporary vellum, spine with later gilt, black stamped floral motifs and a black morocco label, lightly soiled, small 4to, Copenhagen, Henrik Göde, 1665.⁂ Rare editio princeps of the great Icelandic sagas of Edda (Snorre-Edda), Volupsa and Havamal. Volupsa tells the story of the visit of Odin to the oracle and her account of the origins of the world and Ragnarok, or Twilight of the Gods. Havamal again concerns Odin and is largely social and didactic in content. Snorri's Edda includes the rules of poetry and quotes from the Skaldic poems. Provenance: 'Emptus Hafnia 3 dios Aug: 1672. pret 1 Talleri Imp:' (ink inscription to front free endpaper).
