The author's own collection of Greek and Roman intaglio rings and gemstones, which was sold following his death to Henry, Prince of Wales in 1609.

Libraries for all.- Gilles-Gibert (Judge) Projet d'éducation et d'instruction sociales, first edition, foxed, original yellow printed wrappers (the upper wrapper forming the title), green silk ties, lightly stained and creased, 4to, Soissons, Gilles-Gibert printers, 1843.⁂ Rare, with WorldCat recording only one copy (BnF). The author proposes a scheme to establish libraries in all schools, villages, military barracks and prisons. He notes that a committee has been formed to consider the means of achieving these aims. A number of letters of support from politicians and officials from many parts of France are printed at the end. Loosely inserted are a 2pp. A.L.s. from the author presenting the work to the politician, diplomat and historian Baron Amable Guillaume Barante, in which he asks for his support, and a printed broadside in French, dated 1844 announcing the establishment of a similar scheme in Bavaria.

In 1632 he published a Welsh-Latin dictionary, Antiquae linguae Britannicae ... dictionarium duplex. Davies wrote the Welsh-Latin section of the dictionary himself, and used Thomas Wiliems's work for the Latin-Welsh sections, abridged and revised. His dictionary was subsequently used and cited as an authority in the English dictionaries of Thomas Blount (1656) and Edward Philips (1658), and Dr Johnson had a copy of the Dictionarium duplex in his library." - Oxford DNB.

Marrow controversy.- Fisher (Edward) The Marrow of Modern Divinity, first edition, initial leaf of preface by Joseph Caryl, woodcut initials and headpieces, contemporary sheep, some chipped and wear to extremities, [Wing F996], by R. W. for G. Calvert, 1645.⁂ The rare first edition of a work that caused a storm of controversy when it was republished by Thomas Boston in 1718. The Marrow was accused of promoting the doctrine of universal salvation and it was condemned by the General Assembly. Nevertheless debate continued around the work and it has proved to be widely influential. ESTC lists only a handful of copies and we can trace no examples at auction.

Pauls Church-yard, 1645.⁂ The first collected edition of Milton's poems and the first to bear Milton's name on the title. The frontispiece was the first portrait Milton had published of himself, however he was so unimpressed with the likeness that he insisted on the inclusion of the Greek inscription below that openly mocked the image ("my friends, looking at my countenance, know not whom it represents, but laugh at the awkward imitation of the stupid artist"). The present collection includes all bar two of Milton's poems written up to this point and other than 'Comus', 'Lycidas' and a few minor works is the first appearance in print for the majority of his poetic works.

For the Year 1671 [No.69-80], containing: A Letter of Mr. Isaac Newton...containing his New Theory about Light and Colors..., No.80, pp.3075-3087, first edition, February 19 1671-2. First printing of Newton's first scientific publication, describing his observations of light using prisms, where he shows that white light is composed of rays of different colours, which can be separated with a prism. The paper is the foundation for most of the subsequent work in optics. Newton sent his ideas in a letter dated February 6th to the secretary of the Royal Society, just in time for it to be published in the next issue of Philosophical Transactions, on February 19th, establishing his reputation.

Routledge were pressured to withdraw the book from sale by the Home Secretary (who in turn had been alerted by The Public Morality Council) and only a handful of copies from this edition reached the market. The book was subsequently published the same year in Paris and New York (see next lot), but the true first edition remains an elusive book

Dated 25th August, 1659 at end. Harrington (1611-1677) was a political theorist and author of the utopian The Commonwealth of Oceana, 1656.

Physiology.- Bernard (Claude) Nouvelle fonction du foie, considerée comme organe producteur de matière sucrée chez l'homme et les animaux, first edition, presentation inscription from the author to original upper wrapper, illustrations, original wrappers bound in (lightly stained), later half morocco, spine gilt, 4to, [Norman 200; Horblit, One Hundred Books Famous in Science, 11A], Paris, J.-B. Baillière, 1853.⁂ A monograph issue of Bernard's doctoral thesis, a "remarkable exposition of the glycogenic function of the liver" (Horblit). This is an outstanding presentation copy, inscribed by Bernard to the anatomist Marie Philibert Constant Sappey: "Monsieur Sappey hommage affectueux de l'auteur Cl. Bernard." As much through concrete discoveries as in the creation of new concepts, the work of Claude Bernard constitutes the founding of modern experimental physiology. His scientific career started with two series of precise and well delimited researches: on the one hand, the chemical and physiological study of gastric digestion, and on the other, experimental sections of nerves.

Agricola (Johann) Drey hundert Gemeyner Sprichworter, der wir Deutschen uns gebrauchen, und doch nicht wissen woher sie kommen...Das Ander teyl..., 2 parts in 1, collation: a8 b4 A-Z8; a-b8 A-HH8, complete with blank leaves b4 and b8, Gothic letter, woodcut architectural borders, heavily annotated throughout in at least 2 contemporary hands, predominantly in red ink but also in black ink, part 1 corner of b2 defective, some light soiling and foxing, but generally an excellent copy in handsome contemporary blind-stamped calf, rebacked, corners worn, leather ties sometime renewed, 8vo (152 x 100mm.), Hagenau, Johann Setzer, 1529.⁂ Scarce early edition of the first collection of German proverbs, printed in the same year as Nuremberg, Augsburg, Zwickau and Eisleben editions. The first volume contained 300 sayings with a further 450 added in the second volume. All 1529 editions are rare, especially so if complete and in a contemporary binding, as here; this copy is also enhanced by the contemporary annotations with variations, explanations, examples and queries all noted. Agricola (1494-1566) was a Lutheran reformer, initially a friend and follower of Martin Luther, until they famously fell out over the obligations of Christians under law. His collection of German proverbs was originally intended for use in schools and was based on the Adagia of Erasmus.Literature: Adams A353 (incomplete); VD 16 A 956.

Early computing.- Faster Than Thought. The Ferranti Nimrod Digital Computer, first edition, original stiff printed stapled wrappers, very light toning to spine, else fine, 8vo, Hollinwood, Ferranti Ltd., 1951.⁂ First edition of possibly the first known video game manual.The Nimrod computer was built by Ferranti for the 1951 Festival of Great Britain. It was designed to play Nim, an ancient mathematical logic game, and as such was one of the video game machines constructed and certainly the first developed in the UK. Nimrod was tremendously popular and drew in a number of famous challengers including Alan Turing who beat the computer, allegedly causing a malfunction in the process.

He sadly died 5 days after the completion of the final engraving so never lived to see the completed work.
