Fleming (Ian).- Knight (Maxwell) Gunmen's Holiday, first edition, occasional light foxing, original cloth, 8vo, 1935.⁂ Loosely inserted is a hand-painted wooden diorama of a dalmation and chicken by G.E. Studdy (signed "G.E.S."), mounted on card with calendar (for 1938) beneath and pink ribbon above, inscribed on verso by Maxwell Knight "To Joan & Dennis [Wheatley] with all good wishes from Max". The book itself is dedicated to the Wheatleys (To J. and D.W.). Charles Henry Maxwell Knight, OBE (1900-68) was supposedly the basis for the character 'M' in Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. G(eorge) E. Studdy (1878-1948): British artist who created the cheeky cartoon dog Bonzo in 1912. Bonzo's popularity prevailed throughout the 1920s and 30s and he appeared on postcards, toys, annuals and even in silent cartoon films.

"Winter Garden" is surprisingly only the second example of Fiona Watson's work we've offered, the first being lot 653 on 28th Feb 2021 "Natural Progression" a black & white etching from an edition of 60 which sold for £200 (hammer).
