BONARELLI, Prospero (1588-1659). Il Solimano. Florence: Pietro Cecconcelli, 1620. 4° (202 x 160mm). Engraved title, 5 double-page plates by Jacques Callot after the designs of Giulio Parigi (2 repaired tears on plate 2, slight abrasion on F1 affecting a few letters, some occasional pale spotting.) 18th-century vellum, morocco lettering-piece (front hinge cracked, lettering-piece chipped). Provenance: Wilmot Vaughan, first Earl of Lisburne, Ireland (1730-1800, bookplate). FIRST EDITION, second state of the title. Bonarelli's great tragedy was performed in Florence in 1618. Jacques Callot illustrated the work, following the designs of his tutor and colleague, Giulio Parigi, an architect and the chief designer of courtly festivities under the Grand Duke, Cosimo II de' Medici. Both Parigi and Callot were employed by the Medicis, and under their patronage Callot made his many improvements in etching. This is one of the last books he produced for the Medicis, since he returned to his native Nancy following the death of Cosimo II in 1621. "The dramatic finale shows the city of the tyrant Soliman in flames, The moveable scenes -- THE FIRST IN THE HISTORY OF THE THEATRE -- picture contemporary Florence. The whole of its effective contrasts of dark and light, seems fantastic, yet it is the rational and realistic portrait of a fantastic, imaginary subject" (Otto Benesch, Artistic and Intellectual Trends from Rubens to Daumier, Cambridge, 1942, p.17). HOUWAERT, Jean Baptista (1533-99). Sommare beschrijvinghe vande triumphelijcke Incomst vanden ... Aerts-hertoge Matthias, binnen die Princelijcke stadt van Brussele. Antwerp: Christophe Plantin, 1579. 4° (186 x 131mm). Full-page woodcut of the Archduke's coat-of-arms, full-page woodcut of his entry through the triumphal arch on the great market square, 31 full-page woodcuts by Antonij van Leest of allegorical scenes on decorated theatre stages erected in streets, 34 woodcut ornamental cartouches framing verse explications. Contemporary Southern Netherlandish gold-tooled calf (tear in spine). Provenance: Dukes of Arenberg (bookplate). Finely illustrated description in verse and prose of the politically important entry into Brussels, on 18th January 1578, of Archduke Mathias of Austria, whose invitation by the States General of the Spanish Netherlands to act as their Governor was a clear subversion of Philip II's authority. "At his Joyous Entry, which followed Roman traditions, Matthias was welcomed as the Roman hero Scipio, whose task was to protect the Netherlands and free [it] from that highly unjust and unbearable oppression of Don Juan and his adherents and also to maintain us in our liberties, rights and privileges, which we have received from our ancestors'. For the occasion twenty-four stages had been erected devoted to the presentation of classical virtues such as truth, justice, diligence, constancy, faithfulness, temperance, liberality, clemency and modesty. Matthias and Orange, who was appointed Stadtholder-General, took the oath which included the reformulated clause of disobedience. The right of resistance was now enshrined in the Joyous Entry" -- M. van Gelderen, The political thought of the Dutch revolt 1555-1590 (2002) p.138. Bibliotheca Belgica III, 533-4; Landwehr 36; Ruggieri 1055. The Arenberg copy has four other works bound with it: J.B. AERONAUTICS -- [POCOCK, George]. The Aeropleustic Art or Navigation in the Air by the Use of Kites or Buoyant Sails. [London: W. Wilson ?for the author, 1827]. 4° (315 x 245mm). Engraved title by A. Adlard with hand-coloured aquatint vignette by P. Roberts, 3 hand-coloured aquatint plates, 2 signed by Roberts, one after T. Butterworth, the other after S. Colman. (Two plates detached, text leaves loose, spotted and occasionally dust-soiled, tear to margin of F2.) Original paper-backed boards with printed cover label (spine worn). Provenance: J. Whittuck 1828 (inscription on label). FIRST EDITION. The eccentric Bristol schoolmaster, George Pocock, dedicated this work to his ex-kite-flying pupils. Recognising the force of wind power, it provides a history of the kite as a scientific invention, and examines its potential adaptations as a kind of ascending parachute for mariners before describing the famous Charvolant, a kite-powered carriage capable of speeds of twenty miles per hour. The vignette shows a rescue at sea by means of a kite, while the three plates illustrate a kite-powered 'Boat Race', the 'Patent Kite and Charvolant' and 'Charvolants travelling in various directions in the same wind'. The work drew serious attention as well as satire, and a second edition appeared in 1851. See front cover illustration. View on Christie's.com

BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso (1608-1679). De vi percussionis liber. Bologna: Giacomo Monti, 1667. 4° (214 x 156mm). Half-title, 5 engraved plates. (First plate trimmed close at lower margin just into plate mark, tears to half-title, title and +3 expertly repaired, light dampstaining.) Contemporary vellum, early manuscript to spine (flaw to lower cover, edges lightly rubbed, light soiling). Provenance: Richard Short, Rome (early ink inscription on title) -- Earls of Macclesfield (bookplate and blindstamps, sale Sotheby's, 10 June 2004, lot 386). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of this early work on the laws of percussion. 'Borelli discusses percussion in detail, some general problems of motion, gravity, magnetism, the motion of fluids, the vibrations of bodies, and pendular motion' (DSB II 311). He intended this work as a preliminary to his forthcoming study on the movement of animals. His approach was derived from the research on percussion carried out by Galileo: Galileo had first given consideration to this subject in the early 1590s, and had returned to it when writing the Two New Sciences. Borelli's conclusions met with criticism from Stefano degli Angeli and Michelangelo Ricci; the later issue of this work contains his Risposta to these objections, as noted by Cinti. Borelli had initially demonstrated his findings to the Accademia del Cimento in Florence. In 1667, however, he passed through Naples and repeated a number of his experiments for the Neapolitan Accademia degli Investiganti. As a result, the secretary of the Investiganti, the Calabrese nobleman Andrea Concublet, arranged for the publication of this work. Carli-Favaro 78 (329); Cinti 291 (147); De Caro 54; Riccardi I 159. The work consists of 25 plates, each accompanied by commentary, and includes 3 plates (2 plain and one fully coloured) developing a design for a library. The designs throughout are in the Classical style and acknowledge the work of Thomas Hope, George Smith and Charles Percier (p.viii), as well as John Soane (p.38, pl. XVIII).
