Superb, finely nuanced impression with margin at top and bottom. - The first of the 2 rare copies of the special edition which were distributed to family members and friends of the artist. Ferdinand Hodler. (1853 Bern - 1918 Genf). Frühlingssehnsucht, Kniendes Mädchen nach rechts. Um 1910. Lithographie auf leichtem Velin. 67,8 x 43,5 cm (84 x 58,5 cm). Signiert sowie im Stein signiert. - Im eh. Passepartoutausschnitt kaum sichtbar gedunkelt, vereinzelte blassbraune winzige Flecken, insgesamt sehr gut. "Der Frühling I", Museum Folkwang, Essen, Inv.-Nr. G 78). Lithograph on light wove paper. Signed as well as signed in the stone. - Hardly darkened in previous mat section, isolated faint-brown tiny spots, all in all very good. Extremely splendid, chalk-like impression of the large-format depiction with wide margin. - Copy aside the edition of 50 numbered copies. - The folded robe artfully surrounds the girl's body, harmonising with her long hair braided into plaits. Surrounded by a sea of blossoms, she breathes in spring full of the senses. Hodler composes his allegory of spring in an impressive network of lines in the style of Art Nouveau. It is close to four of Hodler's paintings from the years 1901 to 1912, which thematise the awakening spring (cf. "Spring I", Museum Folkwang, Essen, Inv. No. G 78). Our print was probably made in connection with the preparatory work for the paintings but it only shows the girl as part of the overall depiction. The latter depicts her with a boy, Hodler's 14-year-old son Hector. With this print Hodler leaves behind one of his most mature graphic formulations. In 1901/02 he took part in the Secession Exhibition in Vienna with the first version of 'Spring' and achieved his artistic breakthrough. In the following years he became a member of the Vienna and Berlin Secession and the Deutscher Künstlerbund, among others, and received numerous honours and participated in exhibitions.

12 full-page lithographs, 11 text woodcuts and 4 woodcut initials. In: L'Art d'aimer. Lausanne, Frères Gonin. Bound in brown morocco (signed "A. Bourdet"), with suede endpapers and gilt edges on three sides, in half morocco chemise in lined slipcase. - Very occasionally with inconspicuous brown spotting. Overall very well preserved. - First edition. - One of 50 Arabic numbered copies (total edition 275). Signed in the first printing note by Philippe Gonin and in the second by Aristide Maillol. Printed on pur chanvre Canson. - One of the peculiarities of the work is the contrast between the woodcuts, which are in traditional pictorial language, and the sculptural sensuality of the lithographs.
