Ecclesiastical – English Civil War A Relation of the Conference between William Laud then Lord Bishop of St Davids^ now Lord Arch-Bishop of Canterbury and Mr Fisher the Jesuite by the Command of King James of ever Blessed Memorie with an answer to such exceptions as AC takes against it... London 1639. Original calf boards a little rubbed^ interior contents appear good^ folio 388pp. This was seen at the time by the increasingly entrenched Charles I as proof that his Archbishop’s doctrine was far from that of the Roman Catholics^ a vital element in his growing and continuing battle in Scotland against the Presbyterians. It did little however to absolve Laud from the nickname north of the border of ‘The Pope of Canterbury’. Religious discontent was one of the major elements in the outbreak of the Civil War three years later. This is considered the ‘second’ edition of this work – the first appearing as part two of Francis White’s ‘Replie’. This version was however greatly expanded before publication.

Following the Sikh defeat in the First Anglo-Sikh War (1846–47)^ the Punjab came to be ruled by a British Resident seated at the historic capital of Lahore^ supported by a Council of Regency acting for the infant Maharaja Duleep Singh. In 1846^ aged 27^ Edwardes was appointed by the new British Resident Sir Henry Lawrence^ as Assistant Resident. He is best known as the ""Hero of Multan"" for securing the British victory in the Second Anglo-Sikh War. On 22 January 1849 Diwan Mulraj surrendered^ following negotiations directed by Edwardes. Ajoy joined Bhagats hunger strike^ but on the farcical trial Bhagat Singh^ Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death by hanging^ while 7 of the men transported for life^ the others including Ajoy were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Mary Gunn & Enid Du Plessis The Flora Capensis of Jakob and Johann Philipp Breyne 27 X 27.7cm Brenthurst Series 4- General Editor Eric Axelson. The earliest published book to bear the title `Flora Capensis` was a nineteen-page publication by Linnaeus which appeared in 1759. Although published under Linnaeus`s name and in fact also written by hime, the work was the thesis of Carl Wannman, one of Linnaeus`s students. The title was again used for a book by C.P.Thunberg whose work appeared in two volumes from 1807 to 1820. `Flora Capensis` is the Latin for `Flowers of the Cape`, referring to the Cape of Good Hope. The `Flora Capensis` compiled by Jakob and Johann Philipp Breyne and bound in 1724 and here published for the first time, is a collection of water-colour paintings of some flowers of the Cape of Good Hope, rather than a botanical treatise. No earlier manuscript with the same title is known to us. Colour Frontispiece- and a further ninety colour plates with supporting text. Barclay, Rev James, revised by Henry W Dewhurst A Complete and Universal English Dictionary ([1841]) 270 x 220 x 75 Also part-encyclopedias and part-gazetteers, Barclay`s dictionaries, which were published in several editions by different publishers between 1782 and about 1850, also had (certainly in the copy in this lot) sections on linguistics, ancient and modern history, and Latin and French quotations and phrases. Publication of this edition will have been between late-1841 - the date of the Canterbury Cathedral engraving (opposite p 134) - and early-1842 (June 1842 was the month Robert Lucas signed his name at the front of the book). Henry Dewhurst, the reviser, was also the author of a book on whales and one on the oceanic inhabitants of the arctic regions. Our copy of Dewhurst`s revision of Barclay`s Dictionary is in remarkably good condition and is a pleasure to consult and read. The binding is sound, the pages open flat and the paper is thick enough to handle easily. The volume is half-bound in heavy tan calf and matching paper boards. The boards are extensively rubbed, but the leather remains sound, with no wear to the corners. The spine has been reinforced with four tan calf bands and there is other reinforcement between the spine and the covers and at the endpapers, which are thick turquoise marbled paper and which remain in very good condition. The first three leaves of the xxxiii + 960 pp of text are lightly foxed, the title-page, which is an inserted engraving on thicker paper, and the last three leaves are extensively foxed and stained, as are all the 20 inserted engraved plates (mainly maps of English counties). The remaining text pages are unfoxed, bright and unmarked. All three page edges were originally gilt, but only the top edge remains bright, with the other edges now dull brown. An unusual practice is that the entries beginning with a `U` or a `V` are grouped together. Our copy of Barclay`s is handsome and eminently collectable, needing no further restoration. It is interesting to note that some copies of other editions and bindings - we can find no information about other copies of our specific edition - carry price-tags of more than $1000.` Very Good Not stated

Lot 276

Nelson Mandela No Easy Walk To Freedom - SCARCE 1ST. EDITION OF MANDELA`S FIRST BOOK 8vo. A superior copy of this book, very scarce in the hardcover edition. It comprises a collection of his leading speeches and articles between 1953 and 1964 and includes accounts and transcripts of the three major trails in which Mandela was the chief accused, including notably his famous closing speech in the Rivonia trial. It was published while Mandela was incarcerated in Robben Island and for obvious reasons was banned in South Africa. The book was edited by Ruth First with a foreword by Oliver Tambo. A softback edition of this book was published simultaneously and is also scarce but appears occasionally on the market. There was also a US. edition which is somewhat more common. This copy would appear to be unread in about fine condition. The only flaw is an 8mm. circular orange mark on the front board (see picture) of uncertain origin. Internally it is clean and unmarked. The scarce dw. is in very good condition. It is price-clipped and has a 2cm. closed tear at the lower edge of the front panel and some light edge wear, but is otherwise complete and attractive. An essential item for all Mandela collections. Very Good Plus London Heinemann 1965

Rider`s British Merlin was first published in 1656 and continued into the 19th century. Extremely scarce. This is the earliest available edition and only one of its kind to be found anywhere on the internet. Starting bid is set at the minimum AA reserve. The estimated value however is in keeping with later editions and as such is realistic. Fair London E and R. Nutt for the Company of Stationers 1733

Root (A.I.) ABC AND XYZ OF BEE CULTURE 228mm x 160mm x 43mm An Encyclopedia Pertaining to Scientific and Practical Culture of Bees. 16pp Preface plus 720pp. Original gilt embossed, impregnated cloth hardcover. Illustrated in b/w throughout. Very light stain to bottom margin of the first few pages, otherwise a very good clean and tight copy. From the preface to the 1940, 1945, and 1947 Editions; It has not been thought necessary to reproduce the prefaces of each succeeding edition of this work. All told, there have been nearly thirty editions, with an aggregate number of nearly three hundred thousand copies. If we include the editions printed in foreign languages, the number would be close to 50,000 more, or nearly 350,000 in all. It therefore transpires that the book written by A.I.Root for beginners, has finally developed into the ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture. A.I.Root`s first book (published in 1877) was designed primarily for beginners, and hence the name, `ABC of Bee Culture`. Later on there came a call for a book which would cover the need of the more advanced as well as that of the beginner...... Very good Medina, Ohio The A.I. Root Company 1948
