Greenville)] [Cartes et Plans de plusieurs parties des Côtes d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse et d'Irlande], maps only, lacking letterpress title and contents leaf, with 19 engraved charts, all but one double-page, rather water- & damp-stained, contemporary mottled sheep with central gilt arms of ?French naval ministry, spine gilt, rubbed, edges a little worn and stained, folio, [Paris, Jacques Bellin], [1757]; sold not subject to return⁂ Collins surveyed the British coast between 1681 and 1688 and issued his Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, the first such systematic survey, in 1693. This French edition was published by Bellin in anticipation of a French invasion during the Seven Years War.

Narrative of a Journey to the Zoolu Country, in South Africa, first edition, 26 lithographed plates, 3 hand-coloured or partly so, 2 folding maps hand-coloured in outline, foxing to some plates, with loosely-inserted A.L.s. from the chief Librarian of Durban Public Library presenting the book from his own private library to the Governor, original cloth, a little rubbed, spine very slightly faded, [Abbey, Travel 332], 8vo, 1836.⁂ Gardiner established the first mission at Port Natal.

Peter Egerton) Journey across the Western Interior of Australia, first edition, half-title, wood-engraved portrait, title-vignette of Warburton beetle and 8 plates, folding map with route supplied in red, 40pp. publisher's catalogue at end, faint ink inscription at head of title and another to half-title, map with short tear to fold repaired with sticky tape, original green pictorial cloth, gilt, bookseller's ticket Angus & Robertson of Sydney to inside front board, bookplate removed, very slightly rubbed, an excellent copy, [Ferguson 18187; Wantrup 201], 8vo, 1875.⁂ Warburton suffered enormous hardship on his journey, having got lost in the Great Sandy Desert, and was unable to prepare his journals for publication. The scientific results were presented for him by others including Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker and John Gould.

William Fitzwilliam Wentworth) Narrative of Voyages to explore the shores of Africa, Arabia, and Madagascar; performed in H.M.Ships Leven and Barracouta, edited by Heaton Bowstead Robinson, 2 vol., first edition, 5 lithographed plates, 4 folding engraved maps, wood-engraved illustrations, contemporary ink inscription at head of titles, with long loosely-inserted A.L.s. to the mother of Lt. Henry Gibbons relating the news of his death (envelope rather crudely tipped to head of p.152 of vol.1) and note by Gibbons's sister (Mrs. J.H.Pinder) tipped in at beginning, some foxing to plates and maps, bookplate of Rev. John Hethersall Pinder, contemporary half green calf, rubbed, spines browned, one label defective, preserved together in modern green calf-backed cloth drop-back box, red morocco labels, 8vo, 1833. ⁂ Survey of the East and South East African coastline. Lt. Henry Gibbons served on H.M.S. Leven and died on 26th December 1822 of fever, one of many who succumbed to tropical disease on the expedition including Charles William Browne who wrote the letter.

The second voyage includes detailed descriptions and plates of the native inhabitants and the third voyage made many important scientific discoveries. The final voyage was an unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole via Spitsbergen using sledge-boats and reindeer.Saleroom Notice: This is not a complete set; it does not include the scarce Appendix to the Second Voyage published in 1825

Abbey, Travel 709, 1825 edition], 8vo, 1821.⁂ Scarcer than the first edition of 1812, now in 8vo format but with the plates hand-coloured; contains some of the earliest descriptions of the gold, diamond and topaz mines of Brazil.

Australasia.- Australia.- Field (Barron) Geographical Memoirs on New South Wales; by Various Hands..., first edition, 4 folding engraved maps, 3 engraved plates (one aquatint view of Campbell river after J.W.Lewin and 2 botanical), maps and plates a little foxed and offset, contemporary half calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, a little rubbed, [Abbey, Travel 571; Ferguson 1009; Wantrup 108], 8vo, 1825.⁂ Important collection of works on the exploration of New South Wales, edited by a judge of the Supreme Court, and including Surveyor-General John Oxley's 'Report of an Expedition to Survey Port Curtis, Moreton Bay, and Port Bowen, with a view to form Convict Penal Establishments there', on which he discovered the Brisbane River and selected the site of the future city of Brisbane (not separately published). Also including John Uniacke's account of the same expedition, the only published account of Allan Cunningham's 'Journal of a Route from Bathust to Liverpool Plains...', Field's 'On the Aborigines of New Holland and Van Diemen's Land' and 'On the Rivers of New South Wales' across the Blue Mountains, Capt. Mark Currie's 'Journal of an Excursion to the southward of Lake George in New South Wales', and the first trade publication of 'First Fruits of Australian Poetry' (the first book of poems published in Australia, previously only issued privately, Sydney, 1819), as well as others on the aborigines and timber, geology and meteorology etc. of the area.

(2)⁂ First edition to contain the commentary of Janus Dousa the younger ('Coniectanea et notae') separately paginated. 'This edition, according to Barthius, . . . leaves every preceding one far behind by its accuracy and emendations. Heinsius calls it the most correct of all the editions of these poets' (Dibdin I, p. 375).Literature: Adams C1160.

It contains passages from the Bible and various classical authors, including, rather surprisingly, Catullus, for whom it is an important source book. (See Gaisser, Catullus and His Renaissance Readers, p.19). It is rare at auction. Literature: Adams H540; EDIT 16 CNCE 20704.

Beagle in the Years 1837-38-39-40-41-42-43, 2 vol., first edition, 26 engraved or lithographed plates including 11 of natural history, 8 folding engraved maps, 6 in pockets at front, one with route supplied in red, illustrations, errata leaf in vol.1, with advertisement slip for Eyre's Central Australia' tipped into vol.2 but without that of Dutton in vol.1, advertisements tipped to endpapers at beginning and end of each vol.(some varying to those in Wantrup), light foxing and browning, M1 in vol.1 creased, ink signature of ?Willm. Beauchamp Proctor on front pastedowns, first issue binding of original blue ribbed cloth with elaborate grecian borders stamped in blind, spines gilt with kangaroos and emus at foot, rubbed, light stains to upper cover of vol.2, spines faded and worn at head and foot, corners bumped and worn, [Ferguson 4406; Wantrup 89a], 8vo, 1846.⁂ John Lort Stokes served on H.M.S.Beagle from 1824-41, from midshipman to commander, including the famous voyage of 1831-36 with Charles Darwin on board. This work of 1846 describes the completion of the survey of the coast of Australia including the Torres and Bass Straits and the approaches to Adelaide and the Swan River near Perth. The expedition also discovered new rivers in the Gulf of Carpentaria on the north-west coast.

'the first edition [is] an impressive work by any standard, but succeeding editions, augmented by additional information are even more impressive' (Sinkankas). Includes much on gem cutting and mineralogy.

Sovremennyi Balet [The Modern Ballet], first edition, text in Russian, plates, illustrations and decorations, many by Bakst, some colour, many tipped in, original decorated cloth, uncut, rubbed, spine faded, joints split, corners a little worn, [Magriel p.113; Niles & Leslie p.504; cf. Beaumont p168 & Derra de Moroda 2453, French edition], 4to, St. Petersburg, 1911.⁂ Scarce Russian first edition of one of the most important 20th century ballet books, published in French the following year as Le Ballet Contemporain. The work covers Petipa and the development of the Imperial Russian Ballet, Fokine, Isadora Duncan and other modern dancers, up to Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes.

World.- Teixeira (Pedro) The Travels of Peter Teixeira from India to the Low Countries by Land; with a short Account of a Voyage from India to Spain, by way of the Philippine Islands and the Kingdom of Mexico, first edition in English, general title to collection of works (often lacking), drop-head title 'The Travels of Peter Teixeira from India to Italy by Land', wide margins, main title with contemporary ink signature & reference no. at head and very lightly soiled, later half calf, worn patch near foot of spine, cloth boards damp-stained, 4to, for J.Knapton...A.Bell [& others], March 1710.⁂ Part 5 (of 7) of A View of the Universe: or, A New Collection of Voyages and Travels into all Parts of the Worlds published monthly from 1708 to 1710 and reissued as a 2 volume set in 1711 edited by John Stevens. Complete sets of the monthly parts are very rare but individual parts are also scarce and often lack the general or monthly part title.Pedro Teixeira (d.1641) was a Portuguese explorer who was the first European to travel the full length of the Amazon River in 1637 but this narrative is of an earlier journey through the Middle East. Although it finishes with his arrival in Venice he then continued to Antwerp where he wrote this account, explaining the contrary destinations given on the general and drop-head titles.

Cyprus.- Association copy.- Graziani (Antonio Maria) De Bello Cyprio Libri Quinque, engraved architectural title incorporating the arms of Cardinal Francesco Barberini by Claudio Mellan after Antonio Pomeranci, woodcut decorative initials, water-stained at foot, some light browning, occasional spotting, contemporary red morocco, richly gilt, covers with central arms of the Barberini family, enclosed within double filet borders with inner floral and outer bee corner-pieces, all within a wide floral border, itself bordered by double gilt filets, spine richly decorated with floral and bee tools, rebacked, preserving the original backstrip, upper joint just starting at foot, water-stained, [Blackmer 726], folio, Rome, Alessandro Zanetti, 1624.⁂ First edition of this posthumously published work on the Turkish conquest of Cyprus in 1572. It is dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII, and the binding bears the arms of this noble family. Provenance: 17th century Barberini family (arms to binding); John Stafford Reid Byers (armorial bookplate).

Leonardo da Vinci. A Treatise of Painting, first edition in English, engraved portrait frontispiece, title in red and black, 34 engraved plates, 4 folding, 3pp. advertisements at end, old ink signature and monogram stamp of Thomas Baskerfeild at head of title and with his engraved bookplate and notes on front pastedown, early cuttings tipped in at beginning and end, an excellent clean and bright copy, contemporary panelled calf, rubbed, spine ends worn, joints split, 8vo, for J. Senex and W. Taylor, 1721.⁂ Originally written in 1480 but not published until the mid 16th century in France.

Australasia.- Australia.- Collins (Lt.-Col. David) An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales, from its First Settlement in January 1788, to August 1801, second edition, engraved portrait, 2 folding maps, 23 plates and 8 illustrations in text, 3 of the plates and 2 illustrations hand-coloured (all natural history), with advertisement leaf and 8pp. publishers' catalogue at end, pencil signature at head of title, some plates slightly cropped at foot with loss to imprint, one almost detached, stain to lower margin of D1, otherwise a very clean copy in the original boards, uncut, bookseller's ticket of Bristow & Cowtan of Canterbury inside front board, rubbed and marked, spine a little worn, corners bumped, [Ferguson 390; Wantrup 21], 4to, 1804.⁂ The last of the First Fleet journals, originally published in 2 volumes in 1798 & 1802 and abridged into one volume by the author's wife Maria. Despite omitting some information regarding the development of the colony it includes all the plates from the first edition and an additional portrait of the author. These fine plates are probably after sketches by the convict artist Thomas Watling and depict early views of Sydney and Parramatta, and scenes of aboriginal customs. In this issue the 3 natural history plates and 2 illustrations are hand-coloured and feature a lyre bird, a wombat and a duck-billed platypus.

Africa.- Burton (Sir Richard Francis) Wit and Wisdom in West Africa; or, a Book of Proverbial Philosophy, Idioms, Enigmas, and Laconisms, first edition, half-title (small nick to upper edge), light spotting at beginning and end, ex-library copy with stamp on title and label with borrowing details on front pastedown, variant binding of original orange-brown cloth with blind-stamped border on boards and spine titled as usual but with gilt-stamped illustration of negro at foot, a little rubbed, spine faded, library label pasted on upper cover and small sticker at foot of spine, [Penzer 75], 8vo, 1865.⁂ Important work on West African languages with the information recorded in printed form for the first time.According to Penzer the first issue binding is in red cloth with blind-stamped border and no illustration on spine; the second issue or "remaindered" binding is in plum cloth with the spine titled "Negro Wit and Wisdom" and illustration at foot. This copy appears to be a mixture of the two.

Futurism.- Marinetti (Filippo Tommaso) Les Mots en Liberté Futuristes, first edition, typographical illustrations including 4 folding plates, 4pp. advertisements at the end, original wrappers printed in red and black, a little browned, spine worn and slightly defective, becoming loose, 8vo, Milan, Edizioni Futuriste di "Poesia", 1919.⁂ A typical futurist work of "mots en liberté" [words in freedom] using typography to create striking visual effects.

Africa.- Burton (Sir Richard Francis) The Lake Regions of Central Africa, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, folding engraved map with partial hand-colouring, 12 chromoxylograph plates, wood-engraved illustrations, light foxing to some plates, map with tear at fold, contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper, endpapers foxed, contemporary tan calf, gilt, spines gilt with roan labels, a little rubbed, [Penzer p.65], 8vo, 1860.⁂ Account of the Royal Geographical Society expedition with John Hanning Speke in search of the source of the Nile in 1858-59. They started at Zanzibar and travelling through East Africa discovered Lake Tanganyika. After Burton became ill Speke carried on without him, as he did not believe that their location was the source. He was the first European to discover what he named Lake Victoria and claimed it to be the source but Burton disputed it, leading to a long-running bitter feud between them (see also lot 17).

Italy.- Hakewill (James) A Picturesque Tour of Italy, from Drawings made in 1816-1817, first edition, large paper copy with plates on india paper, engraved additional pictorial title by Henry Moses and 63 plates, mostly views, by J.Landseer and others after Hakewill (several finished by J.M.W.Turner), all mounted, occasional foxing to mounts and light offsetting from plates, engraved bookplates of Lewis John Berger and Earl of Cromer, handsome near-contemporary burgundy morocco with elaborate gilt borders and central gilt arms, spine gilt in compartments, very slightly rubbed at edges, an excellent copy, folio, 1820.
