Leonard Baskin, American 1922–2000 - Prometheus, c.1948; carved oak, H49 x W46 x D44 cm Provenance: The Bertram N. Linder and Mary Ellen Linder Marital Trust, New York; Bonhams, New York, Modern and Contemporary Art, New York, 9th November 2010, lot 122; Pyms Gallery, London, purchased from the above Literature: Irma B. Jaffe, 'The Sculpture of Leonard Baskin', The Viking Press, New York, 1980, p.210, illus. p.28; 'New Foundations', vol.2, no.1, Fall 1948 (according to Irma B. Jaffe, 1980 - this edition included a number of photos of Baskin's early work) Note: this early masterpiece by the artist was made while he was studying at the New School in New York, where he had returned following the Second World War and his experiences serving with the Armed Guards. ‘Prometheus’ is a brilliant early example of Baskin’s ability to grapple with a classical myth with originality; his Prometheus a muscular worker, ready to steal the fire of creativity from the oppressive gods. The work is a summation of his aesthetic and political principles at this early stage in his career, and he would return to such themes of individuality and defiance, worked through narrative Classical and Old Testament narratives throughout his life. Prometheus defied the Olympian gods in Ancient Greek mythology by stealing fire and giving it to humanity in the form of knowledge and creativity. Baskin saw in this myth a sense of the role of the artist to defy and inspire, particularly relevant aesthetically at this point in his career in his choice to work in a figurative style, as opposed to Abstract Expressionism. Baskin would revisit the theme in illustrations for the poetry collection 'Prometheus on His Crag' by Ted Hughes and in a woodcut of 1950 now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as later bronzes. Baskins works is highly indicative of the Post-War period, sharing an intensity of vision with figures such as Elisabeth Frink, Germaine Richier and Alberto Giacometti. Like Frink, Baskin focused almost entirely on the male figure, seeking a visual language that spoke to an everyday experience of life and death, demonstrated most fully in his ‘Dead Man’ series, first started in the 1950s. Baskin retained a defiantly figurative language throughout his sculpture and works on paper, continuing the legacy of Käthe Kollwitz in his choice to work across mediums in an attempt to engage with an audience outside of the artistic elite. Works by the artist are in major museum across the USA, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, MoMA, New York and the Detroit Institute of Arts. In the UK works are held by the British Museum, the V&A and the Tate.
A George II or early George III mahogany library armchair1755-1762With a shaped back, scrolled acanthus clasped, cabochon embedded and downswept scrolled arms with foliate wrapped shaped and scrolled terminals, above a shaped and serpentine seat frame carved with rocaille and conforming side aprons, on cabriole front legs with twin cabochon encrusted foliate sprays, opposing c-scrolls, acanthus and rocaille, terminating in inscrolled feet, on splayed rear legs, one rear leg probably a later replacement, 74cm wide x 74.5cm deep x 102cm high, (29in wide x 29in deep x 40in high)Footnotes:A closely related armchair to the present lot, with conforming rocaille carving to its seat frame, is illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, 1968, London, fig. 189.A Thomas Chippendale design for 'French chairs', dated 1753, with comparable rocaille carved seat frames and similar c-scroll and foliate Rococo carving to that on the offered example feature in the first edition of Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, pl. XX. The same drawing is replicated in a reprint of this seminal publication, 1966, New York, pl. XX, whilst also appearing in Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, compiled by E. White, 2000, Woodbridge, pl. XVIII, p. 100.Two other related designs by Chippendale, again described as 'French chairs' in the 'Director', are illustrated in the same book, Ibid, pl. XIX and pl. XX, originally published in the first and third editions respectively. These have similar rocaille carving to that on the present chair with comparable shaped blocks to the base of their arm terminals.A further drawing, which is arguably closest of all to the offered model and described as a 'French Elbow Chair', features in 'The Universal System of Household Furniture' by William Ince and John Mayhew, published in 1762. This also appears in Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, pl. LIX, p. 103.The opposing c-scroll, rocaille, cabochon embedded foliate spray and scrolled acanthus carving on the offered armchair are recurrent characteristics found on much of the finest French Rococo-influenced seat furniture made in England during the 1750s and even into the early 1760s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. 1590 A.D. Consalus Ponce de Leon - Rome, 1590, hardback (rebound), 176 pp. 190 grams, 17.2 x 11.3 cm (6 3/4 x 4 1/2 in.).Property of an Essex gentleman. This is the unique first edition of the complete works of Theophanes, comprising three letters from the archbishop of Nicaea which are now in the Vatican Library. The author, Theophanes, was active in the early ninth century; the translator, Ponce de Leon, was born around 1530 and was well educated, able to read Greek sufficiently well to translate it into Latin. He had access to a good library (possibly at the Vatican). He calls himself 'Cubicularius secretus' to Pope Sixtus V: a 'cubicularius' is a chamberlain, or head of the private servants; a position which afforded him access to both a great library and some very knowledgeable contacts. This publication was edited by Ioannes Bonafes and the book bears the legend on the title page (in Latin) 'The existing works of Theophanes, archbishop of Nicaea; now first published in Latin from the Greek, in the Vatican Library'. A copy of the same book is in the famous Onassis Library (ref. 33522).

Wright (Thomas) Universal Architecture, Book 1. Six Original Designs of Arbours, vol.1 only (of 2), first edition, title in red and black with engraved vignette, list of subscribers also with engraved vignette, 11 engraved plates only (of 12; missing the plan for F), some nicks and tears, title with small repaired loss to upper right corner, some toning and surface dirt, all leaves loose, presented in modern green cloth oblong folio slipcase, 1755 *** One of the great rarities of the literature of English eighteenth-century garden architecture. Thomas Wright (1711-1786) had had an initial career as a writer of books on astronomy, but had begun by the late 1740s to design garden buildings and to remodel country houses for a network of aristocratic English patrons. He announced in 1753 his intention to publish a volume of his designs for garden architecture, to be issued in three instalments covering “arbours, grottos and alcoves”, but the publication was dependent on his securing sufficient subscribers and it was not until 1755 that the present Book I, on arbours, appeared in print. The imaginative designs include a domed temple, an arbour “of the parasol kind”, an aviary, a hermitage and a platform for open air entertainment. Sadly he was unable to attract the required number of subscribers and although Book II, on grottos, followed in 1758, Book III, on alcoves, was never published."There are no other pattern-books of grottos, rustic buildings and ruined follies, nor at that time were there any books of architectural design so attractively presented in complete landscape settings." (Eileen Harris)

A 22ct gold opal parure by Louis Osman, 1972 and 1973, comprising a hinged torque collar, hinged bangle, brooch, pair of ear pendants and ring, each of organic branching form, supporting graduated oval cabochon opals each claw set above a concave dish mount, the gold with hammered finish, the necklace, earrings, ring and bracelet all hallmarked for London 1972, with maker’s mark ‘LO’, the brooch unmarked, within customised carved yew wood and silver fitted case, collar inner diameter 12cm, bangle inner diameter 6.5cm. £40,000-£60,000 Please note ARR will apply to this lot (Artist’s Resale Rights). --- The opals (Australia’s national gemstone) in this suite were acquired as gifts for his wife Dorothy, by Maurice Jenkins from the Perth firm Mazzucchelli’s, over multiple trips to Australia during the late 1960 and 1970s. Mr and Mrs Jenkins first met Louis in 1970, (when she had 11 opals), and they commissioned Louis to mount these into a suite of jewellery. Having agreed the design with the couple, Louis told Mr Jenkins the sizes and numbers of additional opals that he wanted in order to complete the initial commission: a necklace, bracelet, earrings and ring suite, which was completed in 1972. The brooch was added in 1973. Correspondence from Louis discusses how excited he was to be working with opals and how the commission was bringing him out of a creative slump, following a car accident. Louis took inspiration from everywhere, from the sublime to the mundane - in this case he was inspired, for the concave mounts of the opals, by the humble kitchen teaspoon. The raised claw settings of the opals above the concave ‘bowls’ allow light to pass around the stones, displaying them to their best advantage. The earrings in this suite are of complimentary but differing designs - a feature Louis often employed in the designs for earrings. In her biography of Louis, Jenny Moore notes: “Louis felt that [the difference between the earrings] emphasised each side of the face as representing a different side of the personality”. The fitted case subsequently was carved to house the complete suite from a single piece of yew wood taken from the grounds of Canons Ashby. Yew wood is particularly resistant to decay and insect attack. The natural cracks within the wood are inlaid with silver, producing a similar result to the Japanese technique of Kintsugi, in which ceramics are repaired with lacquer and gold dust, highlighting - almost celebrating - the repair. “Louis never regarded the box for keeping his jewellery in as merely a practical object, but felt that it should enhance the character of the individual piece” - J. Moore (page 118). An original pen and watercolour design for this suite was sold as part of The Personal Archive of Louis Osman at Noonans on 27 March 2018 (lot 287). Pierre Simon de Laplace Théorie analytique des probabilités. - (Premier à quatrième) supplément à la théorie analytique des probabilités. - Zus. 5 Teile in 1 Band. Paris, Courcier 1812-1825. Johannes de Gaddesden Rosa anglica practica medicinae a capite ad pedes. Pavia, (F. Girardengus &) J. A. Birreta, 24. Jan. 1492. • Erstes gedrucktes medizinisches Buch eines englischen Schriftstellers • Mit einem Antidotarium, das Einblicke in die englische Volksmedizin bietet • Seltene erste und einzige Ausgabe des 15. Jahrhunderts 'First printed medical book of an Englishman. John of Gaddesden was a prebendary of St. Paul's Cathedral and physician to Edward II' (Fielding Garrison und Leslie Morton) Der englische Mediziner John of Gaddesden (um 1280-1361), war der erste Leibarzt, der am englischen Hof angestellt war. Jahrhunderts. Folio. 29 : 20 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke am Ende und eingemalten roten Initialen. - KOLLATION: 4 nn., 173 num. Bll.
