Wrote purely from practice, first edition, signed by the author at head of A1, as usual (for copyright reasons), 2 folding engraved bills of fare, these creased, water-stained, spotted, lightly browned, contemporary sheep, rebacked, preserving original gilt backstrip in compartments (worn at ends), corners restored, little stained, [Bitting p.387 (note); Cagle 944; Maclean pp.121-124; Oxford pp.98-99; Simon BG 1249], 8vo, Manchester, Printed by J. Harrop, for the author, and sold by Messrs. Fletcher and Anderson, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, London; and by Eliz. Raffald, Confectioner, near the Exchange, Manchester, 1769.⁂ Mrs. Raffald spent fifteen years as housekeeper to Lady Elizabeth Warburton (to whom the work is dedicated), married the gardener, opened a confectioner's shop in Manchester and set up a cookery school. She went on to have fifteen daughters, run two inns, found Salford's first newspaper, establish a registry office for servants and compile Manchester's first Directory.

Jacques à la Couronne d'or, 1674.⁂ Rare copy at auction of this classic of French cookery. We can trace only a handful of copies since 1966, including ours, last sold in 2007. The preface includes a diatribe against La Varenne, probably borne out of jealousy having witnessed the success of his Le Cuisinier françois. Includes suggestions for eating al fresco in gardens, grottoes or woods. Jean du Puis, to whom the privilege was granted, assigned part of the edition to Frédéric Léonard, and accordingly we find a variant imprint with the latter's name.

Smith, Printer, 193 High Holborn, [1st July, 1826 (date of 'Advertisement' at end)].⁂ A rare little work. It is difficult to establish a sequence for the early editions with their different imprints. All carry an advertisement from the author stating that the particular printing is a reaction to high demand. The matter is further complicated by the fact that we find no edition before 1826 to help us to establish the first edition. No copy of this J. Smith imprint was found on WorldCat or Library Hub.

A reissue of the first edition of 1729 with new title page and half-title. Bradley was a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1724 was elected the first Professor of Botany at Cambridge. Henrey says that he was 'outstanding for his versatility'.

Osborn, at the Golden-Ball in Paternoster-Row, 1741.⁂ Simon suggests that the author's need for a pseudonym was because she was 'the first woman to dare deal in print with maladies which ladies were not supposed to know anything about'.
