Loubayssin de Lamarca (Francisco). Historia tragicomica de Don Henrique de Castro, [probable] 1st edition, Paris: Vendense... en la tienda de la viuda de Matias Guillemot, 1617, engraved title and portrait plate (?a8 verso), woodcut initials, lacks errata leaf at end (3K3), a few old brown ink pen scratches to title and foremargin and lower margins repaired close to plate impression, some old ink marginalia and underscoring to Book 1, mostly in French, some spotting and old damp staining at front and rear, edges stained red, 19th-century calf with leather spine label, rubbed, 8vo (17 x 10.5cm) This is generally regarded as the first novel to be set in Spanish America. The action largely takes place in 16th-century Chile and also recounts visits to Mexico, Peru and a circumnavigation of the globe with Magellan. There is one suggestion of an edition of 1612, which is believed to be a ghost and based on a misreading of this 1617 edition. This 1617 edition is therefore considered by all the authorities to be the first edition, with no proven evidence of the existence of a 1612 edition. In Blake's words, 'Robert Rauschenberg was an enormous influence on me in the mid 1950s. My 'Rauschenbergs' are a very formalised version of his work. I made no attempt to assimilate his beautiful, almost 'Abstract Expressionistic' use of paint.' Rauschenberg embraced a great variety of artistic mediums including photography, printmaking, performance art and even stage design in his artistic practice. Using these techniques in original ways, he quickly became the revolutionary artist of his generation. For instance, Rauschenberg created what he called "combines", which were hybrids of painting and sculpture that challenged the conventions of collage, and he was even the first artist to use the technique of screenprinting on canvas.
