Chromolithographed throughout by Henry Noel Humphreys and printed on thick card, initials, the text contained within highly elaborate "illuminated" borders, heightened in gilt. FINELY BOUND in original elaborately embossed dark olive morocco by Hayday on bevelled boards with the title in a gilt oval panel at the centre, the spine with raised bands, gilt edges (very lightly rubbed at edges). The colophon at the foot of the final chromolithographed page states: "In designing the ornaments to the sacred parables contained in this volume the illuminator has sought to render them in each instance appropriate. The work of illumination was commenced on the first day of May in the year of our faith MDCCCXV and terminated on the tenth day of Feb. MDCCCXLVI. HNH" [i.e. Henry Noel Humphreys]. Inserted at the end of the work are 2-pages of plain printed text, dated December 1845, explaining the designs of the illumination, giving them some historical context, and with advertisements for two other similar works from the same press. This leaf is sometimes lacking. Other copies of the same work are recorded in a papier-mâché binding. FIRST EDITION of the first book illustrated in Henry Noel Humphreys' chromolithography. FIRST EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY, heavily annotated throughout in pencil by Lionel Smithett Lewis.GLASTONBURY - P. W. THOMPSON (dates unknown).  Glastonbury. London: Charles Murray, 1927. 8vo (177 x 120mm). Half title, 5-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end all for books by the same author. FINELY BOUND in contemporary red crushed morocco gilt [the binding unsigned], the upper cover lettered in gilt with a single gilt fillet border and small ornamental cornerpieces, the lower cover with a central floral spray and circles stamped in gilt, the spine gilt in six compartments, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "Lionel Smithett Lewis, with best wishes from Carol A. M. Cannon, July 1941." Lionel Smithett Lewis (d.1953), the recipient of the gift of this book, was (clearly) an authority on the folklore and history of Glastonbury, a former vicar of the town, and a man of strong opinions. His withering, acerbic and often exasperated pencil annotations, with multiple deployments of the exclamation mark, appear on virtually every page of the present copy: there are too many examples to give a satisfactory impression with a few judicious quotations, but his note, written on the title page, will suffice to set the general tone of his assessment of the author: "[the author is] a British-Israel Accountant, suffering from acute mental dyspepsia. This book is written to relieve him. You must make allowance for an invalid. He means well. L.S.L." We have been unable to establish the identity of Carol A. M. Cannon, who presented the book to him.

Although the title page describes the poems contained in it as "anonymous", many were largely Neuburg's own work, or his free adaptations of traditional ballads.
