GREENE GRAHAM: (1904-1991) English Novelist. Small collection of three T.Ls.S., Graham, on behalf of Greene by his secretary in his absence, each one page, 8vo, Antibes, 22nd November 1971 - 2nd July 1975, all to Georges Belmont. Greene, who dictated each of the letters, states, in part, 'Yes, I've heard of [Jean Louis] Barrault's defection. I must say I had little hope after our last meeting that anything would come of the play and now time is too short to do anything about it and fulfil the conditions laid down by the film producers. I wish you'd try your hand at a musical version!' and further refers to a Book Festival in Nice to which he had been invited to sit on a jury, 'I hate all juries except the legal ones which are amusing...I am finding myself overwhelmed with small bits of work - three introductions to write for example and I do want to save all my time for finishing a novel' (22nd November 1971), 'I have just been reading Vizinczey's typescript of the first part of his new novel and I find it extremely amusing. He's coming to see me one day this coming week and I shall tell him to get in touch with you about In Praise of Older Women' (23rd March 1973), 'A friend of mine John Ciarncross who works with the F.A.O. in Rome is proposing to submit a quite amusing and scholarly work that has been published in England on Christian polygamy!....I'd be grateful if you'd look out for its arrival. Cairncross has done the best existing translation of Racine in English which was published by Penguins.' (2nd July 1975). Together with a contemporary typed copy of a letter from Greene to Belmont, one page, 4to, n.p., 24th March 1978, stating 'I am really worried about your translation which I feel does credit to neither of us. It seems to me over large sectors to be clumsy, literal, flat....I think I should insist that the book should be postponed till the autumn so that you have time for a proper re-writing....I don't see how you can possibly turn this into your usual high standard translation in a couple of weeks or so. I know you worked a miracle when you revised the first translation of Raffles, but this is a 300 page book. I am fagged out and I'm disappearing into the country away from the bloody book from Tuesday till Saturday'. Also including a small series of T.Ls.S., contemporary copies of letters etc., either to Greene or Belmont, one being a copy of Belmont's letter to Greene (19th November 1971) referring to Barrault's defection and the Nice Book Festival, and a T.L.S. by Marie Schebeko, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 2nd August 1974, to Belmont, concerning Greene, in part, 'He was delighted to hear that the so long hoped for reprints are actually in the works this time. When I told him that the "Essays" would be coming out in 2 volumes.....he said he wondered why in two because he feared that the few who would have had the courage to buy Vol.1 would never touch Vol.2, tho' it has a lot more lively stuff in it. I did tell him that you had discussed this with him the last time you dined together. At this he grinned shyly and said his memory not being what it was, if you said so it must be true but that he would have thought that his ex-publishers' instinct would have prodded him to bring up the above arguments...' and in a holograph postscript writing 'Please, please see to it that the cover of the new reprints of "The P[ower] & The Gl[ory]" and of "Br[ighton] R[ock]" are submitted for the author's approval before anything is sent to the printers!' and further including two pages of original typed corrections headed Inserts for the Return of A. J. Raffles and noting that page numbers refer to the Limited Edition, detailing inserts for Act 2 and Act 3. An interesting selection of letters. Generally VG, 12. £250-350 Georges Belmont (1909-2008) French Writer and Literary Translator.

[LENIN VLADIMIR ILICH]: Printed pamphlet, sixteen pages, small 8vo, first edition, published in 1899 in Geneva by Lenin, in Cyrillic. The protest document being an edition of the Union of Russian Social-democrats with epilogue by the editor of the magazine Rabochee Delo (The Workers´Cause), which states in part `Seventeen Russian social democrats have unanimously adopted and printed a resolution so that other comrades could read it. The reason for it is that recently Russian social democrats have demonstrated deviation from their principles established by founders and members of the movement since 1890. The "Credo", which should show main points of view of some new Russian social democrats, is an attempt to expose "new criteria" systematically....Industrialization has influenced the history of Social democracy.... The revolutionary movement started in the West with the words "liberté, fraternité, egalité"... Further reporting in part `We have to keep close to the plan set which means creating an independent workers political party, inseparable from the proletariat class struggle which will lead us to the conquest of political freedom.....The belief that the class struggle has to include mandatorily the political and economic struggle as proved in the international social-democracy....The proletariat must aspire to create independent workers, political parties and the target has to be the conquest of the political power to create a socialist society.....´ The manisfesto establishes some principles `The motto has to be helping the workers in their economic and political struggle; agitation as a consequence of the economic necessities and political oppression; and the propaganda of the scientific socialism and the democratic ideas....The social-democracy has to concentrate all the strength in organizing the political party, consolidating the discipline and developing conspiracy techniques.´ A very interesting early document. With some overall age wear, few stains, last page repaired, and few detached. G. £400-500

Lot 104

Very Rare Double Signed copy of the Limited Edition Book “The Fun Of The Fair” by Aleister Crowley, the book is number 160 of 200 produced. Although all were meant to be signed by Crowley, very few actually were signed. This example has his signature to the front but also a signed dedication to the title page. This book was published in 1942. Book remains in good overall condition with some light staining to the covers. Original string binding to the spine. Ex Harry Spilstead Collection. ** Aleister Crowley  was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, painter, novelist, and mountaineer. He founded the religion and philosophy of Thelema, in which role he identified himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. Born to a wealthy  family Crowley rejected this fundamentalist Christian faith to pursue an interest in Western esotericism. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he focused his attentions on mountaineering and poetry, resulting in several publications. Some biographers allege that here he was recruited into a British intelligence agency, further suggesting that he remained a spy throughout his life. In 1898 he joined the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, where he was trained in ceremonial magic. He married Rose Edith Kelly and they honeymooned in Cairo, Egypt in 1904. There, Crowley claimed to have been contacted by a supernatural entity named Aiwass, who provided him with The Book of the Law, a sacred text that served as the basis for Thelema. After an unsuccessful attempt to climb Kanchenjunga and a visit to India and China, Crowley returned to Britain, where he attracted attention as a prolific author of poetry, novels, and occult literature. In 1907, he and George Cecil Jones co-founded a Thelemite order, the A?A?, through which they propagated the religion. After spending time in Algeria, in 1912 he was initiated into another esoteric order, the German-based Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), rising to become the leader of its British branch, which he reformulated in accordance with his Thelemite beliefs. Through the OTO, Thelemite groups were established in Britain, Australia, and North America. He spent the First World War in the United States, where he took up painting and campaigned for the German war effort against Britain, later alleging that he had infiltrated the pro-German movement at the behest of the British intelligence services. In 1920 he established the Abbey of Thelema, a religious commune in Cefalù, Sicily where he lived with various followers. His libertine lifestyle led to denunciations in the British press, and the Italian government evicted him in 1923. He divided the following two decades between France, Germany, and England, and continued to promote Thelema until his death. Crowley gained widespread notoriety during his lifetime, as a result, he was denounced in the popular press as "the wickedest man in the world" and erroneously labelled a Satanist. Crowley has remained a highly influential figure over western esotericism and the counter-culture, and continues to be considered a prophet in Thelema.
